NHL – Chicago Blackhawks drop interim tag for GM Kyle Davidson
The Chicago Blackhawks have hired Kyle Davidson as general manager, dropping his interim tag instead of going outside the floundering franchise for new leadership. Davidson has been with the Blackhawks since he joined the organization as a hockey operations intern in 2010. The 33-year-old from Sudbury, Ontario, also has worked as a video analyst, hockey operations manager and assistant GM. Davidson was elevated to the interim job after Stan Bowman resigned in October in the wake of a report by an outside law firm that found the organization mishandled allegations that an assistant coach sexually assaulted a player in 2010.

MLB – MLB cancels opening day after sides fail to end lockout
Major League Baseball’s financial fight cost regular-season games for the first time in 27 years when often acrimonious talks to end a management lockout collapsed and Commissioner Rob Manfred scrapped March 31 openers. With owners and players unable to agree on a contract to replace the collective bargaining agreement that expired Dec. 1, Manfred canceled the first two series for each of the 30 teams, cutting each club’s schedule from 162 games to likely 156 at most. A total of 91 games were erased. Manfred vowed players will not receive salary or major league service for games missed.

National scoring leader Caitlin Clark of Iowa is the Big Ten player of the year. Kim Barnes Arico of Michigan is coach of the year. Clark averages 27.5 points per game. She was the choice for the top honor in voting by league coaches and a panel of media members. The sophomore is the first non-senior to win the award since 2015. Barnes Arico has led Michigan to a 22-5 record and the Wolverines finished the regular season tied for third in the Big Ten at 13-4. The Wolverines have been ranked in the top 10 most of the season.

NFL – NFL’s competition committee considers changing OT rules
The Buffalo Bills are lobbying the NFL’s competition committee to change the overtime rules for playoff games. And one of their former players is willing to help. Bills general manager Brandon Beane says there are multiple proposals being discussed at this week’s meetings and believes some changes could be coming though he declined to offer specifics. Indianapolis Colts coach Frank Reich, the former Bills quarterback, also believes it’s time for a change. But no decision is expected to be made at this week’s annual scouting combine in Indianapolis.

NFL – Bears sign veteran LB Joe Thomas
The Chicago Bears have signed veteran inside linebacker Joe Thomas. Thomas has 16 starts over seven seasons with the Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens. He has 12 tackles for loss and 10 pass breakups. The Bears made big changes after going 6-11 last season, hiring general manager Ryan Poles and coach Matt Eberflus to replace the fired Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy. Chicago also is switching from a 3-4 to a 4-3 scheme.

Russia/Ukraine – Russia excluded from more sports as sanctions mount
More and more sports are following the appeal of the International Olympic Committee and banning Russian athletes from competing in the wake of the country’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia was barred from competing in international ice skating, skiing, track, basketball and some tennis events a day after being kicked out of soccer competitions and hockey. The decisions follow the IOC’s request to international sports federations to keep Russian athletes out of events they organize. The International Skating Union says no athletes from Russia or Belarus “shall be invited or allowed to participate” in events until further notice. Figure skating is extremely popular in Russia and the world championships are scheduled to held this month in France.

Horse Racing – Bob Baffert sues Churchill Downs over 2-year suspension
Bob Baffert has sued Churchill Downs and track leadership in federal court, seeking to overturn the Hall of Fame trainer’s two-year suspension on grounds it violated his due process rights. The suit filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court names Churchill Downs Inc., CEO William C. Carstanjen and board chair R. Alex Rankin. The historic track suspended Baffert last spring through 2023 and cited a recent spate of failed drug tests by his horses including now-deceased colt Medina Spirit after he won the Kentucky Derby. Churchill Downs called Baffert’s lawsuit disappointing but not surprising in a statement and said it would fight the suit.
