NHL – Kane says he could make his Red Wings debut as soon as next week at Buffalo
Patrick Kane says he could make his debut with the Detroit Red Wings as soon as next week in his hometown of Buffalo against the Sabres. Kane and the team want him to get through a few practices before he returns to game action. The 35-year-old winger is roughly six months removed from undergoing hip resurfacing surgery. Kane says doctors cleared him for contact two months ago. The three-time Stanley Cup champion and 2016 NHL MVP signed a $2.75 million contract for the rest of the season with the Red Wings after choosing them among several interested teams.

Lakers 133, Pistons 107 – Lakers bounce back to rout Detroit, handing Pistons team-record 15th straight loss
D’Angelo Russell scored a season-high 35 points, Anthony Davis had 28 and LeBron James 25, helping the Los Angeles Lakers beat Detroit 133-107 for the Pistons’ franchise-record 15th straight loss. James, coming off a career-high 44-point loss at Philadelphia, and his teammates were very loose during pregame warmups, perhaps sensing it would be an easy night to bounce back. And, they were right. The Lakers led 38-24 after the opening quarter, shooting 60% to Detroit’s 36%. Even though there were three quarters left, the outcome seemed certain against an offensively challenged team that doesn’t play stingy defense and is a league-worst 2-16 Detroit broke the franchise record after sharing it with three teams that had 14-game skids during the 2021-22, 1993-94 and 1979-80 seasons.

NFL – Hendon Hooker practices with Lions for 1st time
The Detroit Lions put Hendon Hooker on the practice field for the first time, opening a 21-day window to decide whether to activate the rookie quarterback or to keep him on injured reserve for the rest of the year. Hooker went through drills on Wednesday with the Lions, a little more than a year after tearing a ligament in his left knee. The 2022 SEC Offensive Player of the Year spent the past two years at Tennessee after playing previously at Virginia Tech. Detroit drafted Hooker in the third round with no expectations that he would play as a rookie.

NCAAFB – Wildcats’ Braun named Big Ten coach of the year. 8 Michigan players to 1st team
Big Ten coaches have voted Northwestern’s David Braun coach of the year and put eight Michigan players on the all-conference first team. Offensive player of the year is Ohio State receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., defensive player of the year is Illinois defensive lineman Jer’Zhan Newton and freshman of the year is Purdue defensive back Dillon Thieneman. Ohio State has six players on the first team. West Division champion Iowa has linebacker Jay Higgins, defensive back and punt return specialist Cooper DeJean and punter Tory Taylor on the first team.

NCAAFB – Awkward trophy ceremonies, CFP implications highlight championship weekend
There could be some awkward trophy ceremonies around college football’s championship weekend. From the Pac-12, where the winner is guaranteed to be one of the schools that helped collapse the conference, to the Big 12, where the commissioner was outwardly rooting against the favorite to win the championship game, to the Big Ten, where Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh and the commissioner who suspended him could be sharing a stage, awkward handshakes are highly likely. The games themselves should provide high drama, too, as seven teams fight for four playoff spots.

MLB – Andre Dawson asks Hall of Fame to change cap on plaque to Cubs from Expos
Andre Dawson says he sent a letter to baseball Hall of Fame chair Jane Forbes Clark asking to change the cap on his plaque from the Montreal Expos to the Chicago Cubs. He disagreed with the decision by the hall as soon as it was made over his objection 13 years ago. Dawson tells the Chicago Tribune: “I don’t expect them to jump on something like this” and adds “if they elect to respond, they’ll take their time.” Players could make the decision through the 2001 induction, and the hall took over the decision ahead of the 2002 vote.
