Red Sox 6, Tigers 0 – Martinez hits 20th, Wright pitches Red Sox past Tigers 6-0
J.D. Martinez hit his 20th home run, Steven Wright pitched seven sharp innings in his first start of the season and the Boston Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 6-0 on Tuesday night.  Xander Bogaerts also homered for the Red Sox, who have won six of eight and hold the best record in the majors at 42-19.  Wright (2-0), the knuckleballer who served a 15-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy, allowed only two hits and struck out six with three walks.  Nick Castellanos doubled in the first and singled in the third off Wright. Dixon Machado’s two-out single in the eighth against reliever Hector Velazquez was the only other hit for the Tigers, who have lost three of four. Artie Lewicki (0-1) made his first start in the majors and lasted 3 2/3 innings, loading the bases twice in the fourth before getting pulled with Detroit trailing 4-0. He allowed four runs — two earned — on five hits and three walks.

Twins 4, White Sox 2 – Game 1 – Twins take opener
Eduardo Escobar hit a three-run home run with two outs in the eighth inning to power the Minnesota Twins past Chicago 4-2 in the first game of a doubleheader. The win spoiled a stellar start by White Sox right-hander Reynaldo Lopez.

White Sox 6, Twins 3 – Game 2 – Abreu homer helps White Sox bounce back to split with Twins
Jose Abreu hit a two-run homer in the first inning of the second game of a doubleheader to spoil Zack Littell’s major league debut and help Chicago bounce back from a late lapse in the opener, and the White Sox beat the Twins 6-3 for a split on Tuesday. Abreu, who hit an RBI double in the opener, hit a first-pitch fastball from Littell (0-1) left over the middle of the plate onto the grass berm beyond center field. With an RBI single by Kevan Smith and an RBI double by Adam Engel, the White Sox staked starter Lucas Giolito (4-6) to a 4-0 lead. Giolito took advantage of the early cushion and completed six innings, and a two-run double by Yolmer Sanchez in the fourth provided further support.  Littell, added as the 26th player for the doubleheader, was acquired last July 30 from the New York Yankees in a trade for starting pitcher Jaime Garcia. The 22-year-old got nine outs, allowing six runs on six hits and four walks.

Phillies 6, Cubs 1 – Zach Eflin pitches into 8th inning, Phillies beat Cubs 6-1
Zach Eflin pitched into the eighth inning, Nick Williams homered and the Philadelphia Phillies snapped a three-game slide Tuesday night with a 6-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs.  Williams had three RBIs and Eflin (2-2) allowed one run and eight hits in a season-high 7 2/3 innings on an unseasonably cool night at Wrigley Field with the wind blowing. The right-hander snapped a two-game skid for his first win since May 7.  Edubray Ramos recorded the final out in the eighth and Seranthony Dominguez got the final three outs — after Ramos walked the leadoff batter in the ninth — to extend his scoreless streak to 14 2/3 innings. Anthony Rizzo had two hits and an RBI as Chicago’s four-game winning streak came to an end. Kyle Hendricks (4-5) allowed five runs and five hits in five innings. He struck out five and tied a season high with three walks.

MLB – Little Rocket: Tigers pick Clemens’ son on Day 2 of draft
Little Rocket led off Day 2 of the Major League Baseball draft.  The Detroit Tigers took Texas second baseman Kody Clemens, the youngest son of seven-time Cy Young winner Roger Clemens, with the opening pick of the third round — No. 79 overall — as the draft resumed Tuesday.  The younger Clemens was the Big 12 player of the year and has helped the Longhorns to the NCAA Tournament super regionals. He’s hitting a team-leading .346 with 21 home runs, second-most in school history, and 68 RBIs as one of college baseball’s top sluggers. Clemens is a semifinalist for both the Golden Spikes Award and Dick Howser Trophy as the best player in the country.  The Tigers selected Auburn right-hander Casey Mize with the No. 1 overall pick on Monday night .

NHL – Islanders fire GM Snow, coach Weight
Lou Lamoriello moved quickly to shake up the New York Islanders by firing general manager Garth Snow and coach Doug Weight and naming himself the team’s new GM just two weeks after taking over as president of hockey operations. Lamoriello made the moves that begin to reshape the organization in his image, two weeks to the day ownership said he’d have “full authority over all hockey matters.” Lamoriello left the Toronto Maple Leafs to run the Islanders and will begin the search for a new coach immediately. The Islanders missed the playoffs eight times in Snow’s 12 years as general manager, including the past two seasons.

NFL – Bears’ Miller won’t set limits on recovery from leg injury
All Zach Miller knows is he’s not setting any limits on his recovery — and his doctors aren’t either.  Whether the Chicago Bears’ tight end can play again after a gruesome injury last season nearly cost him his left leg still is to be determined.  The Bears placed Miller on the physically unable to perform list on Tuesday, one day after he signed a one-year contract. The deal was at least a goodwill gesture for a popular player who dislocated his knee trying to make a touchdown catch during the Week 8 game at New Orleans. He has undergone nine surgeries since then, but was walking on his own by late December.  Miller has been spending several hours a day at the team’s facility in rehab and meetings. Though he is not yet allowed to run, he can at least play with his children.  He’s also wearing a brace on his leg to hold up a dropped foot that was brought on by nerve damage. The nerve started functioning again in the past month, and Miller "wanted to have a party" that day.  He said being around the team, having "that brotherhood" and people who "check in on me" helps.  Miller also praised chairman George McCaskey and an organization that has "taken care of me since Day 1."  Coach Matt Nagy called it "without a doubt" the "right thing to do."

Boxer Floyd Mayweather is the champ on Forbes money list
Floyd Mayweather is the champ at making money.  Forbes magazine reported Tuesday that the boxer is again the highest paid athlete and for the fourth time in seven years. His estimated earnings, including endorsements, for 2017 were $285 million. That stems largely from his bout last August with UFC’s Conor McGregor.  Mayweather overtook soccer great Cristiano Ronaldo, who held the money crown the previous two years.  Soccer players held three of the top five spots. Forbes says 40 basketball players were among the top 100 thanks to a "soaring salary cap triggered by the NBA’s $24 billion TV contract."  Lionel Messi was No. 2 at $111 million, followed by Ronaldo at $108 million, McGregor at $99 million and Neymar at $90 million. Completing the top 10 were basketball’s LeBron James (85.5), tennis’s Roger Federer (77.2), basketball’s Stephen Curry (76.9) and quarterbacks Matt Ryan (67.3) and Matthew Stafford (59.5).

Nassar – Gymnastics exec says she was told to keep quiet about Nassar
The former senior vice president of USA Gymnastics says she was instructed to keep quiet after she informed her boss about allegations of sexual abuse by former team doctor Larry Nassar. Rhonda Faehn made that claim during a Senate subcommittee hearing Tuesday. Former USA Gymnastics president Steve Penny refused to testify, invoking the Fifth Amendment. Congress is examining what went wrong at the sport’s governing body that allowed Nassar to abuse hundreds of athletes over two decades.

Horse Racing – Justify draws No. 1 post for Triple try in Belmont Stakes
Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Justify will break from the No. 1 post as the early 4-5 favorite in the Belmont Stakes as the colt tries to complete a Triple Crown sweep. Trainer Bob Baffert is not a fan of the inside post for his horses, no matter what the race.  Justify will take on nine rivals in the 1 ½ -mile race Saturday at Belmont Park. Trainer Todd Pletcher will saddle Noble Indy and Vino Rosso, and he says Baffert must be nervous about Justify’s post position.

XFL – Former quarterback Oliver Luck to become XFL commissioner
Former NFL quarterback Oliver Luck is leaving his high-ranking position at the NCAA to become commissioner of the XFL, the second edition of professional wrestling mogul Vince McMahon’s football league. McMahon announced the hire four months after unveiling plans to relaunch the XFL, which folded in 2001 after its only season. The new XFL is scheduled to begin in 2020. Luck, the father of Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, played four seasons for the Houston Oilers after being drafted in the second round out of West Virginia in 1982. He graduated from University of Texas law school in 1987.  He went on to a successful career in sports management in the professional and college ranks. He joined the NCAA in 2014 as executive vice president of regulatory affairs and strategic partnerships.

AHL – Simon named Griffins head coach
The Detroit Red Wings promoted Grand Rapids Griffins assistant coach Ben Simon to be the new head coach of their top farm club.  Simon helped Grand Rapids win the Calder Cup Championship last season, as an assistant to Todd Nelson, who left to be an assistant with the Dallas Stars.  Simon has spent three seasons in Grand Rapids and previously wan as an assistant for the AHL’s Toronto Marlies and the Rockford IceHogs.  He was the head coach for the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones, leading them to the Kelly Cup Finals in 2013-14.  Simon won a Turner Cup Championship as a player with the Orlando Solar Bears in the IHL in 2001, he won the Calder Cup with the AHL’s Chicago Wolves the following year.  Simon originally was a 5th round draft pick by the Chicago Blackhawks, in 1997.  He played in 81 NHL games with the Atlanta Thrashers and Columbus Blue Jackets.  He is the 11th head coach in Griffins franchise history.
