Gleyber Torres and Greg Bird also homered for the AL East-leading Yankees, who improved to a big league-best 38-17. New York is 21 games over .500 for just the second time since ending the 2012 season at 95-67; the Yankees were 91-70 last year before losing their regular-season finale. Severino (9-1) allowed two runs _ one earned _ and four hits while walking none. He is 7-0 in 10 starts since losing at Boston on April 10.

Tigers 4, Yankees 2 – Game 2 – Judge sets doubleheader K record as Yanks and Tigers split

Leonys Martin had two hits and scored twice for Detroit in the second game as the Detroit Tigers beat New York 4-2 for a day-night split Monday after New York took the opener 7-4 behind Luis Severino’s eight strong innings and a six-run fourth inning. Mike Fiers (5-3) got the win in the nightcap, allowing two runs in 5 2/3 innings. Three relievers finished, with Shane Greene striking out three in the ninth for his 15th save. Detroit’s pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts in the game.  Domingo German (0-4) allowed four runs in 6 2/3 innings for New York. Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez hit back-to-back doubles in the seventh to give Detroit a 4-2 lead. The Tigers have hit a double in 52 consecutive games, their third-longest such streak since 1908. Yankees slugger Aaron Judge became the first player since at least 1920 with eight strikeouts in a doubleheader, including five punchouts in the nightcap. Judge struck out eight times in nine at-bats, a record for a doubleheader during the liveball era, according to STATS. Judge struck out in each of his five at-bats in the late game, including with a runner aboard in the bottom of the ninth.  The five strikeouts were a career high for Judge, who led the majors with 208 strikeouts while winning AL Rookie of the Year last season.

MLB – Tigers draft Auburn right-hander Casey Mize with No. 1 pick
The Detroit Tigers have selected Auburn right-hander Casey Mize with the No. 1 pick in the Major League Baseball draft.  The announcement Monday night at MLB Network studios marks the second time the Tigers have led off the draft, and first since they took Rice pitcher Matt Anderson in 1997. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Mize had long been linked to the Tigers, and he pitched his way this season to the top spot on Detroit’s list. Mize went undrafted out of high school three years ago, but developed into a potential big league ace while in college. Mize is 10-5 with a 2.95 ERA and 151 strikeouts with just 12 walks in 109 2/3 innings while helping the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament super regionals. Mize has solid command of four pitches, including a fastball that hovers in the mid-90s. His outstanding command and wicked split changeup whip up lots of swings and misses. With the second selection, San Francisco took slugging Georgia Tech catcher Joey Bart, the Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year.  Wichita State third baseman Alec Bohm was the first of six players attending the draft to be selected, going third overall to Philadelphia. Oregon State second baseman Nick Madrigal went fourth to the Chicago White Sox. Rounding out the top five was Cincinnati, which took Florida third baseman Jonathan India.

Capitals 6, Golden Knights 2 – Capitals on verge of Cup after blowing out Golden Knights
The Washington Capitals are one win away from the first Stanley Cup in franchise history after a 6-2 blowout of the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 4 on Monday night gave them a commanding 3-1 series lead. Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals will get their first chance to hoist the Cup in Game 5 on Thursday night in Las Vegas. Evgeny Kuznetsov dished out four assists, T.J. Oshie, Tom Wilson, Devante Smith-Pelly, John Carlson, Michal Kempny and Brett Connolly scored and Braden Holtby stopped 28 of the 30 shots he faced. The desperate Golden Knights outchanced the Capitals by a wide margin but fell apart after James Neal clanked a shot off the post instead of hitting a wide-open net early in the first period. The expansion team’s Cinderella run is in danger of coming to a quick end. Marc-Andre Fleury allowed six goals on 23 shots, and by the time Neal and Reilly Smith scored in the third period, it was too late.

NFL – Lions sign TE Wes Saxton, waive DB Raysean Pringle
The Detroit Lions have signed free agent tight end Wes Saxton. The Lions announced the move Monday. They also waived defensive back Raysean Pringle. Saxton has played one NFL game in his career, for the New York Jets during the 2015 season. He entered the league that year as an undrafted free agent. Saxton was a member of practice squads for the Jets and Washington in 2016. He spent part of last season with Buffalo.

NFL – Bears TE Zach Miller gets 1-year deal after leg injury
The Chicago Bears have re-signed veteran tight end Zach Miller to a one-year contract, clearing the way for him to return from a gruesome injury last October that nearly cost him his left leg.  Miller tore an artery while dislocating his knee trying to make a touchdown catch during the Week 8 game at New Orleans. He has undergone at least eight surgeries since then, but was walking on his own by late December. Miller has spent the past three seasons with the Bears, starting 28 of 33 games while making 101 receptions for 1,161 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also spent three seasons with Jacksonville. The Bears have signed versatile Trey Burton at tight end. He threw a touchdown to quarterback Nick Foles in Philadelphia’s Super Bowl win over New England.

NFL – Former 49ers wide receiver Dwight Clark dead at 61
Dwight Clark, the former 49ers wide receiver whose reception known as “The Catch” sent San Francisco to its first Super Bowl, has died one year after revealing he had ALS. He was 61. Clark said in March 2017 that he had ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. The team says Clark died Monday surrounded by friends and family. Clark won two Super Bowls with the 49ers during a nine-year career that ended in 1987.

NFL – Trump calls off event for NFL’s Eagles, cites anthem dispute
A White House celebration of the NFL champion Philadelphia Eagles has been called off by President Donald Trump, who says fans deserve better than the smaller delegation the team was sending to the event planned for Tuesday. Trump is citing the dispute over whether NFL players protesting racial injustice must stand during the playing of the national anthem. However, none of the Eagles took a knee during the anthem in 2017. In a statement issued Monday less than 24 hours before the event, Trump says some members of the team disagree with his insistence that they “proudly stand” for the national anthem in honor of military veterans and the nation as a whole. Trump says a different ceremony will honor veterans and the nation instead.

Tennis – French Open – Serena Williams pulls out of French Open with injury
Serena Williams has called off her Grand Slam comeback, pulling out of the French Open because of a chest injury before she was supposed to play Maria Sharapova. Williams announced her withdrawal at a news conference at Roland Garros.  Williams’ voice quivered as she said she can’t serve because of a problem with her tight pectoral muscle. She and Sharapova were scheduled to play a fourth-round match today. Sharapova will play 2016 French Open champion Garbine Muguruza in a quarterfinal on Wednesday.

Sports Betting – New Jersey sports betting law rounds 3rd, heads for home
New Jersey lawmakers are considering a change to their proposed sports betting law that would require the major professional sports leagues to consult with state gambling regulators before rules governing the betting are issued. A state Senate committee is considering the change to the law. A state Assembly committee advanced the bill earlier Monday. The bill does not contain an integrity fee payment for sports leagues. Officials of Major League Baseball, the NBA and the PGA Tour testified that they need the fee.

NCAAFB – Pac-12 – Six wins needed for bowl eligibility from Pac-12
The Pac-12 will require its teams to win at least six regular-season games to play in a bowl game, eliminating the opportunity for a 5-7 squad to earn a postseason spot when there are not enough six-win teams nationally to fill the bowls. Pac-12 presidents passed the rule proposed by a subcommittee of athletic directors. The growing bowl lineup led to the NCAA determining in 2015 that 5-7 teams with the best Academic Progress Ratings would be bowl eligible if there were not enough six-win teams to fill the then-80 spots. Three 5-7 teams played in bowls in 2015 and two did so in 2016. None were needed last season. No 5-7 bowl-eligible teams have been from the Pac-12, which this season has seven contracted bowl spots for its 12 schools.

Court orders records unsealed in Penn State officials’ case
A Pennsylvania appeals court on Monday ordered the release of documents sealed in the criminal case against former Penn State administrators over their handling of child sex abuse complaints about former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. The three-judge Superior Court panel’s unanimous decision concerned many of the more than 200 sealed records. The judges said the basic information in many of the documents sought by The Associated Press has previously been made public and should be released.
