Cubs 7, Pirates 2 – Hammel goes to 4-0, Rizzo hits 2 doubles in Cubs’ win
Jason Hammel raised his record to 4-0 and Anthony Rizzo hit two doubles as the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-2 on Monday night. Hammel’s ERA rose to 1.24 after entering the game with a National League-leading 0.75 mark. He gave up two runs and five hits in five-plus innings with three strikeouts and one walk. His streak of five straight starts of allowing one run or fewer ended. Rizzo hit an RBI double and scored in the third inning as the Cubs went ahead 2-1, then doubled again during a four-run fifth that pushed the lead to 6-1. The Cubs improved to 18-6, tops in the major leagues, and avoided losing consecutive games for the first time this season while winning for the fifth time in six games.

NFL – Lions pick up 5th-year option for 2017 on Ziggy Ansah
The Detroit Lions have picked up the fifth-year option on defensive end Ziggy Ansah. Ansah was the fifth overall pick for the Lions in 2013 and has been among the league’s top young pass rushers. He had 14 ½ sacks last season and was the first Lions defensive end to be selected to the Pro Bowl since 2002.

NFL – After strides at Michigan, Rudock gets NFL shot with Lions
After his first game at Michigan last season, it was hard to tell if Jake Rudock would even make it through the year as the starting quarterback, much less play his way into an NFL opportunity.  A lot changed during his brief stint with the Wolverines. Rudock was drafted in the sixth round Saturday by the Detroit Lions, an impressive accomplishment for a player who took a while to win over Michigan fans but ended up making significant strides under coach Jim Harbaugh. The Lions hadn’t drafted a quarterback since taking Matthew Stafford No. 1 overall in 2009. Rudock transferred from Iowa to Michigan for his final college season. After a rough start, Rudock completed 64 percent of his passes on the season for 3,017 yards with 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions. In his final college game, he threw three TD passes in Michigan’s 41-7 rout of Florida in the Citrus Bowl.

NHL – McDavid among finalists for Calder Trophy as NHL top rookie
Edmonton forward Connor McDavid, Philadelphia defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere and Chicago forward Artemi Panarin are the finalists for the Calder Trophy for the NHL’s top rookie. The finalists based on balloting by the Professional Hockey Writers Association were announced on Monday night. The award will be handed out on June 22 in Las Vegas. The 19-year-old McDavid had 16 goals and 32 assists despite missing much of the season due to a broken collarbone, living up to his hype as the No. 1 overall pick in last year’s draft. Gostisbehere led rookie defensemen with 17 goals and 29 assists in 64 games. The third-round pick from the 2012 draft scored four overtime goals, matching a single-season record for a defenseman. Panarin, 24, led all rookies with 30 goals and 47 assists in 80 games.

Marquette facility wins Kraft Hockeyville USA contest
Marquette’s Lakeview Arena has won the title of Kraft Hockeyville USA, a $150,000 grand prize and the opportunity to host an NHL preseason game. The Mining Journal reports that several hundred people gathered inside the facility Saturday as the announcement was made on NBC. Among those in attendance were professional hockey player Justin Florek of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and Northern Michigan University athletic director Forrest Karr. Lakeview was chosen out of more than 1,000 locations around the country. The Marquette arena defeated facilities in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in the final four, and in Rapid City, South Dakota, in final round. The $150,000 grand prize will be used to refurbish and upgrade Lakeview. It will host an NHL preseason game Oct. 4 between the Buffalo Sabres and the Carolina Hurricanes.

NASCAR – Talladega wreckfest comes at a price
NASCAR officials have gone to work studying the wrecks from last weekend’s race at Talladega to see what can be altered to keep cars from lifting off the track. The delicate line between sport and entertainment was dangerously straddled by 40 drivers roaring along in a pack of cars at 200 mph. When the dust settled, 35 cars had been involved in at least one accident and two cars went airborne. When Kevin Harvick’s car lifted off the track in a last-lap crash, it finally put an end to the chaos. Nobody was killed but all that wrecking came at a price. The cost of damaged race cars on Sunday neared $10 million in losses across the grid, according to an informal survey Monday by The Associated Press of five top race teams. Within that series-wide estimate, some teams estimated they lost $500,000 per car _ total loss situations _ while others estimated $250,000 without including any engine damage. NASCAR’s chief racing development officer Steve O’Donnell says the race series never wants to see cars “up in the air.”

Golf – PGA – First Tour win for Stuard
Brian Stuard earned the first PGA Tour win when he birdied the second playoff hole at the Zurich Classic.  Stuard finished regulation tied with Jamie Lovemark and Byeoung-Hun An at 15-under in the rain-delayed tournament.  Because of rain all weekend in Avondale, Louisiana, the tournament was reduced to 54 holes.
