Terrence Ross added 18 points for the Raptors, who recovered quickly after Detroit’s Andre Drummond made a shot from about 80 feet to end the third quarter. Toronto led 70-65 at the start of the fourth, and Lowry’s driving three-point play set the tone for the final period. The Atlantic Division-leading Raptors eventually turned the game into a rout, to the delight of the many Toronto fans in attendance at the Palace. Drummond had 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Pistons.

Pau Gasol finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds for Chicago, which was missing three of its leading scorers to injuries: Derrick Rose, Jimmy Butler and
Nikola Mirotic. The Hornets led by 22 points in the first half and pulled ahead 78-53 with 3:42
left in the third quarter on two free throws by Kidd-Gilchrist. Chicago pulled to 90-78 on McDermott’s 3-pointer with 6:53 left in the fourth. But the Hornets responded with an 8-2 run and led by at least 13 the rest of the way.

NBA – Fisher fired as coach
Derek Fisher has been fired as coach of the New York Knicks. The dismissal came hours after the club lost its fifth straight game on Sunday. The Knicks have dropped nine of 10 and fallen to 23-31, in 12th place in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Fisher went 40-96 after being hired in June 2014 following the end of his playing career. Associate head coach Kurt Rambis has been promoted to interim head coach. His first game is Tuesday night against Washington.

Red Wings 3, Panthers 0 – Pavel Datsyuk scores 2 in 3rd, Red Wings beat Panthers 3-0
Pavel Datsyuk scored twice in a 1:08 span midway through the third after Tomas Tatar broke a scoreless tie earlier in the period and Petr Mrazek made 23 saves for the Detroit Red Wings in a 3-0 win over the Florida Panthers on Monday night.  Mrazek has a career-high four shutouts this season. Detroit has won two straight home games for the first time in two months. The Atlantic Division-leading Panthers lost a second straight game and perhaps a key player, when he was hit by Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader.

Last Night
Notre Dame 89, Clemson 83

Notre Dame 89, Clemson 83 – Auguste’s 18 helps Notre Dame to 89-83 win over Clemson
Zach Auguste scored 19 points and had eight rebounds to lead Notre Dame to a 89-83 win over Clemson on Monday night. The win keeps the Fighting Irish (17-7, 8-4 Atlantic Coast) in line to finish in the top four seeds at the ACC tournament and get a double bye. Notre Dame never trailed, but Clemson (14-10, 7-5) kept it close for most of the game. The Fighting Irish were up 50-47 when Clemson’s Donte Grantham was called for a charge on a close call driving to the basket. Notre Dame scored on 11 of its next 12 possessions. Auguste had three baskets on powerful inside moves and the Irish hit five 3-pointers as the lead ballooned to 77-64. Jaron Blossomgame scored a career best 30 for the Tigers, who likely fell all the way off the NCAA tournament bubble.

MLB – AP source: J.D. Martinez, Tigers reach $18.5M, 2-year deal
A person with knowledge of the deal says J.D. Martinez has agreed to an $18.5 million, two-year contract with the Detroit Tigers, avoiding salary arbitration. The person spoke Monday night on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been announced. The 28-year-old Martinez was eligible for arbitration through next year and can become a free agent after the 2017 World Series. Martinez batted .282 with 38 home runs and 102 RBIs last season. He hit 23 homers in 2014 after he was released by Houston during spring training and the Tigers signed him.

NFL – Super Bowl scores big…So does Vegas…
Sunday’s Super Bowl drew an average of 111.9 million viewers for Denver’s victory over Carolina.  That was lower than the past two years. The rating makes Sunday’s game the third most-watched event in U.S. television history, according to the Nielsen company. Last year’s down-to-the-wire contest between New England and Seattle keeps the record with 114.4 million viewers. Meanwhile in Nevada, Super Bowl fans bet a record $132.5 million at Nevada sportsbooks on the 50th version of the game. The Nevada Gaming Control Board says its preliminary estimate that Nevada’s 194 sports books kept about 10.1 percent of the wagers, for a total win of $13.3 million.

USA Soccer – Players’ union opposes expedited schedule in USSF lawsuit
The union that represents the Women’s World Cup-winning American national team opposed an expedited schedule in the lawsuit filed against it by the U.S. Soccer Federation last week, insisting no collective bargaining agreement exists. The federation sued in an attempt to establish it has a contract with the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team Players Association that runs through this year’s Olympics until Dec. 31. The union maintains the memorandum of understanding agreed to in March 2013 can be terminated at any time. The USSF filed a motion Friday in U.S. District Court in Chicago asking for an expedited schedule, and the submitted opposition papers Monday that claim “facts asserted in the motion are nowhere near accurate and are hotly disputed.”  The union also maintains the USSF knew about the disagreement since July but did nothing about it. An initial status conference is set for April 4.
