Indians 4, Tigers 0 – Kluber throws 5-hit shutout; Indians beat Tigers 4-0
Corey Kluber pitched a five-hit shutout and the Cleveland Indians used a four-run fourth inning to defeat the Detroit Tigers for the fifth straight time this season, 4-0 Wednesday night. Kluber (2-3) worked out of jams in the second and fourth to beat Detroit for the second time in two weeks. The right-hander, who won the AL Cy Young Award in 2014, struck out seven and walked two in his second career shutout and eighth complete game. Anibal Sanchez (3-3) didn’t allow a hit through three innings, but gave up four runs on three hits, a walk, a hit batter and a wild pitch in the fourth. Michael Brantley’s RBI single and Mike Napoli’s run-scoring double gave Cleveland a 2-0 lead. Another run scored on Sanchez’s wild pitch before Yan Gomes’ double capped the scoring.

Red Sox 5, White Sox 2 – David Ortiz hits 509th homer to power Red Sox past White Sox
David Ortiz hit his 509th home run to put the Boston Red Sox ahead to stay in a 5-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox Wednesday night. Ortiz’s two-run shot to right field off Carlos Rodon in the fifth inning tied him with Gary Sheffield for 25th all-time. It was his sixth homer of the season and 451st with Boston, one off Carl Yastrzemski’s club mark. Ortiz added an RBI single in the seventh against Zach Duke, and embattled Clay Buchholz (1-3) was sharp over seven innings in Boston’s fourth win in five games. Jose Abreu’s two-run homer in the first was the only blemish for Buchholz, who allowed three hits and struck out six.

Cubs 6, Pirates 2 – Zobrist, Rizzo homer as Cubs top Pirates 6-2 for sweep
Ben Zobrist hit a three-run home run, Anthony Rizzo also connected and Jon Lester worked out of a pair of jams to lead the Chicago Cubs over the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-2 Wednesday for a three-game sweep. Zobrist’s third-inning homer put Chicago ahead after center fielder Andrew McCutchen dropped Rizzo’s two-out liner for an error. With its seventh win in eight games, Chicago improved to a major league-best 20-6. The Cubs has won seven straight road games and completed their first sweep in Pittsburgh since Sept. 7-9, 2012. They lead second-place Pittsburgh by six games in the NL Central. Lester (3-1) scattered eight hits in 5 2/3 scoreless innings, struck out five and walked two. The left-hander has allowed one run or none in five of six starts this season.

Michigan has hired assistant basketball coaches Billy Donlon and Saddi Washington.  Wolverines coach John Beilein announced the moves Wednesday. Beilein had to replace two key coaches on his staff because Bacari Alexander was hired to lead the Detroit Titans and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee hired LaVall Jordan. Donlon was 109-94 and was the 2013 Horizon League coach of the year in a six-season run with Wright State, which fired him in March after a 22-win season.     Washington had been an assistant at Oakland University for 10 seasons.

NCAA Basketball – Ex-Michigan State player Appling faces weapons charges
Authorities say former Michigan State basketball player Keith Appling has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon and other crimes after being found in possession of guns and marijuana in suburban Detroit. The Wayne County prosecutor’s office says the 24-year-old was arrested Sunday outside a Dearborn strip club. Club security called police after seeing a man pull a gun from the trunk of a car. Prosecutors say Appling was in the driver’s seat. Officers found a handgun, a loaded weapon and a small amount of suspected marijuana. He was arraigned Wednesday and his next hearing is set for Friday. Appling’s lawyer, Cyril Hall, says police sought a different car and the search wasn’t legal. Appling played for the Spartans from 2010 to 2014 and is now in the NBA’s development league.

The University of Notre Dame has hired a Chicago-based company to run the concessions at its athletic venues. The school says the new partnership will build on stadium favorites while introducing local flavors into menu offerings. The school also says Levy will introduce celebrity chef programs, seasonal menus and chef tables. Notre Dame will be Levy’s ninth college sports client in the last four years. The company also does concessions for schools in five athletic conferences, including Ohio State and Purdue. Levy’s new deal replaces previous concessionaire Centerplate.

NFL – League warns player’s about meat
The NFL has warned players that some meat produced in China and Mexico may be contaminated with clenbuterol, a banned steroid. In a memo sent out by the league office, the NFL warned players that consuming large quantities of meat while visiting those countries may result in a positive test for the substance.  The league also reminded players that they are responsible for any substances found in their bodies. The Oakland Raiders are scheduled to face the Houston Texans on Monday Night Football on Nov. 21 in Mexico City as part of the league’s international series.
