Tigers 3, Rays 2 – F/12 – Hicks’ bunt lifts Tigers to 3-2 win over Rays in 12
JaCoby Jones led off the 12th inning with a triple and scored on John Hicks’ bunt single, lifting the Detroit Tigers to a 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday. Hicks bunted toward first and the Rays didn’t have a chance to make a play at the plate. First baseman Brad Miller fielded the ball and collided with right-hander Matt Andriese (0-1). Warwick Saupold (1-0) got three outs for the win, striking out two. He combined with five other relievers for six scoreless innings, yielding just two hits. Michael Fulmer pitched six innings of two-run ball for Detroit. Fulmer has yielded a total of four earned runs in his last three starts, and hasn’t factored in the decision of each of those games.

Cardinals 3, White Sox 2 – Martinez uses arm, bat to help Cardinals down White Sox 3-2
Carlos Martinez hit his first major league home run and also threw 7 1-3 effective innings to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday. Dexter Fowler added a two-run homer for the Cardinals, who won their second game in a row.  Chicago has dropped four straight and 13 of 17. The White Sox fell to a season-low 12 games under .500. Martinez (3-1) hit a 407-foot shot off Lucas Giolito (1-4) with two outs in the sixth to break a scoreless tie. Martinez allowed one run on five hits and left with a 3-0 lead. He struck out five and walked two. The Cardinals have won each of his six starts.

Rockies 11, Cubs 2 – Arenado hits 2 HRs to back Anderson, Rockies pound Cubs 11-2
Nolan Arenado hit two of Colorado’s four homers and drove in five runs to back Tyler Anderson and lift the Rockies to an 11-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday. Arenado hit a long two-run homer to center off Yu Darvish in the first inning. He connected again in the eighth, hitting a three-run drive to left off Luke Farrell. Trevor Story led off the fifth with a long homer to left, and Chris Iannetta chased Darvish one out later with a solo drive that made it 6-1. Anderson (2-0) pitched a season-high seven innings after leaving his previous start because he was feeling light-headed. The left-hander struck out a season-high nine while permitting two runs and three hits. Anthony Rizzo homered in the fourth and Kris Bryant went deep in the sixth, but that was it for Chicago. The Cubs finished with four hits in their eighth consecutive game with three or fewer runs.

MLB – Mets’ Frazier wants meeting with Manfred over strike zone
Mets third baseman Todd Frazier is asking for a meeting with baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred over his growing frustration with the way umpires are calling balls and strikes. Frazier argued with home plate umpire Lance Barrett while New York was three-hit in a 7-0 loss to Atlanta on Wednesday night, then criticized umpiring around the majors after the game. “I’d like to sit down with Manfred or anybody at MLB and talk to them about it, because it’s rubbing everybody the wrong way,” Frazier said. “You have to be better than that.” The two-time All-Star and eight-year veteran claims umpires have done a worse job this season calling balls and strikes, and he has already had one private meeting with an umpire to discuss the strike zone. Frazier declined to name the umpire, saying only he met with one in San Diego on Sunday. Mark Ripperger, arty Foster and Doug Eddings worked behind the plate during New York’s series against the Padres.

NHL – NHL suspends Capitals’ forward
Tom Wilson’s aggressive play has earned him a three-game suspension. The NHL has punished the Washington Capitals forward for his violent hit on Zach Aston-Reese in Tuesday’s game, leaving the Pittsburgh Penguins center with a broken jaw and a concussion.  It was the second borderline hit by Wilson in as many games. He was not disciplined for a blindside hit on Brian Dumoulin in Game 2 that forced the Pens’ defenseman to go through the NHL’s concussion protocol.  Both hits came in Washington wins as the Caps took a 2-1 lead in the second round of the playoffs.

NFL – Reid files collusion grievance
The NFL players’ union says former San Francisco 49ers safety Eric Reid has filed a grievance against the league. Reid alleges that he remains unsigned as a result of collusion by owners. He had joined former teammate Colin Kaepernick two seasons ago in kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality and racial inequality. He continued his protest last season and became a free agent this offseason when his rookie contract with the 49ers expired.  Kaepernick wasn’t signed for the 2017 season following his release in San Francisco.

NCAAFB – Judge: Old rape reports can be used against Auston Robertson
A judge has ruled prosecutors can admit as evidence two previous rape accusations against former Michigan State University football player Auston Robertson. The 20-year-old Robertson faces two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct in a case that dates to April 2017. That’s when he allegedly assaulted a woman in her apartment.  Ingham County Judge Clinton Canady III on Wednesday ruled two incidents, one in 2013 and the other in 2014, will be admitted as evidence. That’s because women told police Robertson pulled down their pants and used force to rape them. Their descriptions are similar to the alleged attack for which Robertson is being tried. Defense attorney David Rosenberg argued none of the evidence should be admitted because they were overly prejudicial to his client. Michigan State spokeswoman Emily Guerrant said in a statement the university was unaware of the previous sexual assault cases.

Olympics – Final venues set for Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Paralympics
All venues for Tokyo’s Olympics and Paralympics in 2020 have been set with the approval of the sites for soccer matches. Tokyo organizers say soccer will be played at seven venues: Tokyo Stadium, Sapporo Dome, Miyagi Stadium, Ibaraki Kashima Stadium, Saitama Stadium, Yokohama Stadium, and the new Olympic stadium in Tokyo. Organizers announced late Wednesday the final venue locations after getting approval from the International Olympic Committee. Organizers say they will use 43 venues. They are made up of 25 existing facilities, 10 temporary venues, and eight new venues that will be permanent. Japan will spend about $20 billion to put on the Olympics with about 70 percent coming from the public sector.
