MLB – Major League Baseball
Yesterday

Chicago White Sox 3, Minnesota Twins 0
Chicago Cubs 9, Cincinnati Reds 2

Tigers 7, Pirates 3 – Saltalamacchia’s grand slam lifts Tigers over Pirates, 7-3
Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a grand slam for his 100th career home run, Shane Greene pitched six strong innings in his first start since undergoing shoulder surgery last August, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-3 Wednesday night. Saltalamacchia connected off Arquimedes Caminero (0-2) with two outs in the sixth inning, hitting a drive into the right-field bleachers that enabled the Tigers to erase a 2-1 deficit. Detroit loaded the bases on a double by Miguel Cabrera, a walk to J.D. Martinez and Nick Castellanos’ single. Greene (1-0) allowed two runs and three hits in six innings in his first start of the season, which was delayed after the Tigers were rained out Sunday night against the New York Yankees. He struck out seven and walked three in helping Detroit win for the fifth time in seven games to start the season.

White Sox 3, Twins 0 – Rodon, White Sox top winless Twins 3-0
Carlos Rodon worked his way out of trouble several times to complete six scoreless innings, Jerry Sands hit a two-run home run and the Chicago White Sox kept the Minnesota Twins winless with a 3-0 victory on Wednesday night. At 0-8, the Twins have been outscored 33-13 this season. The only other winless team in the majors is Atlanta, also 0-8. The Twins beat the Braves in that epic seven-game World Series in 1991 _ some 25th anniversary this season is turning out to be for the two teams. Rodon (1-1) needed 107 pitches to make it as far as he did. He walked five, including the leadoff man twice, but the Twins left the bases loaded in the sixth after filling them with one out. David Robertson pitched a perfect ninth inning for his fourth save in as many attempts. Phil Hughes (0-2) gave up the one-out homer to straightaway center field to Sands in the seventh.

Cubs 9, Reds 2 – Cubs rip Reds 9-2 for best start since 1985
John Lackey pitched into the seventh inning, Kris Bryant hit his first homer of the season and the Chicago Cubs matched the best eight-game start in franchise history with a 9-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night. Miguel Montero had two of Chicago’s 10 walks and scored three times as the Cubs improved to 7-1 for the first time since 1985 and just the 11th time overall. Jason Heyward drove in two runs with a two-out single in the third and robbed Scott Schebler of a hit with a diving grab in right-center in the fourth. Lackey (2-0) allowed two runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked three, rebounding nicely from a shaky start at Arizona last Thursday. Lackey also contributed at the plate, chasing Alfredo Simon (0-1) with a two-out RBI single in Chicago’s five-run first.

MLB – Former Detroit Tigers broadcaster Paul Carey dies at 88
Former longtime Detroit Tigers broadcaster Paul Carey has died. He was 88. Nancy Carey says her husband died Tuesday at their home in the Detroit suburb of Rochester and had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart disease. She says he was “the love of my life and anybody that knew him was better off for knowing him.” In a statement, the Tigers say Carey was “a consummate professional who had one of the most distinctive and classic broadcast voices.” He was Ernie
Harwell’s radio broadcast partner from 1973-91 and was behind the microphone during the Tigers 1984 World Series championship season. In addition to his nearly two decades broadcasting Tigers games, the native of Mount Pleasant worked for several radio stations. Arrangements are being handled by Modetz Funeral Home.

Lightning 3, Red Wings 2 – Killorn snaps 3rd-period tie, Lightning beat Red Wings 3-2
Nikita Kucherov scored twice and Alex Killorn snapped a third-period tie with his 11th career playoff goal, giving the Tampa Bay Lightning a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings in Game 1 of their first-round series Wednesday night. Ben Bishop had 34 saves for the defending Eastern Conference champions, who got the winner from Killorn less than two minutes after a potential go-ahead goal was waived off when Detroit coach Jeff Blashill successfully challenged  that Tampa Bay should have been called for offsides before Victor Hedman scored. Tyler Johnson picked up a loose puck along the boards and fed Killorn, who slipped the puck past Jimmy Howard at 8:52 of the third. Kucherov scored in the first and second periods and also assisted on the winner. Mike Green and Justin Abdelkader scored for Detroit, which outshot the Lightning 36-34 but had few real scoring opportunities after taking a 2-1 lead in the second period. Game 2 of the best-of-7 series is Friday night at Amalie Arena.

Blues 1, Blackhawks 0 – OT – Backes gets OT winner, Blues beat Blackhawks 1-0
David Backes scored at 9:04 of overtime on a shot that deflected off a Chicago Blackhawks defenseman, and the St. Louis Blues took the series opener 1-0 over the defending Stanley Cup champions on Wednesday night. Backes’ shot got past Corey Crawford after bouncing off Trevor Van Riemsdyk’s skate. Defensemen Jay Bouwmeester and Alex Pietrangelo assisted on the winner. Brian Elliott earned his first career playoff shutout. Elliott, who led the NHL with a .930 save percentage, made 35 saves to thwart a lineup led by scoring champion Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. He made just his second playoff start in three seasons off an impressive finish, going 11-1 in his final 14 starts.

He missed two free throws after being fouled on a 3-pointer.

Bulls 115, Sixers 105 – Bulls wipe out big early deficit, pound 76ers 115-105

Kobe Bryant ended his 20-year NBA career by torching Utah for a season-high 60 points in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 101-96 win over the Jazz. Utah led 96-86 before Bryant scored the next 13 points in just over two minutes. He finishes with 33,643 regular-season points, third-most in league history.
