Tigers 6, Angels 1 – Tigers score 5 after Ohtani’s departure, beat Angels 6-1
Jose Iglesias’ two-run single keyed a Detroit’s five-run sixth as the Tigers took advantage of Shohei Ohtani’s departure following the second rain delay to beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-1 Wednesday night. Ohtani, starting for the first time since May 20th, allowed one run ond three hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out five while throwing 83 pitches. Tigers starter Mike Fiers was also knocked out by the second rain delay in the top of the sixth, allowing one run and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. The Tigers quickly took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases against Cam Bedrosian (1-1) on a single, a walk and a hit by pitch. Iglesias lined a two-run single to center to put Detroit ahead 3-1. Dixon Machado grounded to short, but Andrelton Simmons’ throw to the plate was too late to get JaCoby Jones. Leonys Martin and Nick Castellanos followed with RBI singles off Jim Johnson to push the lead to 6-1. Louis Coleman (2-0) got he win with 1 1/3 innings of relief.
Indians 9, White Sox 1 – Kluber gets eighth win, Indians roll White Sox 9-1
Corey Kluber pitched six shutout innings and reached eight victories before any AL pitcher as the Cleveland Indians rolled to their fifth straight win, 9-1 Wednesday over the sagging Chicago White Sox to complete a series sweep. Spotted a nine-run cushion after four innings, Kluber (8-2) had little trouble with baseball’s worst team. The defending Cy Young Award winner allowed three hits, struck out 10 and improved to 4-0 with a 0.33 ERA in four starts against Central Division teams this season. Melky Cabrera drove in three runs off Reynaldo Lopez (1-4) and Michael Brantley extended his MLB-high hitting streak to 19 games for Cleveland. The White Sox committed two more errors, dropped their fourth in a row and fell to 16-37. Chicago had five errors in the three-game series.
Pirates 2, Cubs 1 – Musgrove beats Cubs on the mound, angers them on the bases
Joe Musgrove pitched seven strong innings and his hard slide led to both teams emptying their benches in another tense moment in the series between NL Central rivals, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs 2-1 on Wednesday night. Musgrove (2-0) helped end the Pirates’ four-game losing streak by overcoming a shaky first inning to allow one run on seven hits and four walks. He also had five strikeouts, five days after pitching seven scoreless innings against the St. Louis Cardinals to win his Pirates’ debut. Musgrove slid hard into second baseman Javier Baez to break up a potential double play in the third inning. Baez was knocked off balance but did not hit the ground. No punches were thrown as both teams milled around the infield and there were no ejections. Umpire crew chief Gerry Davis instituted a video replay review to see if Musgrove interfered with Baez. However, replay officials at Major League Baseball’s central office in New York informed Davis that it was not a reviewable play. The Pirates were angered Monday when Anthony Rizzo’s slide upended catcher Elias Diaz at home plate, successfully breaking up a potential double play in the eighth inning of Chicago’s 7-0 win.

The mother of a G League basketball player who died in March after collapsing on the court during a game has filed a lawsuit accusing the NBA and the Detroit Pistons of negligence. Zeke Upshaw played for the Grand Rapids Drive, a G League affiliate of the Pistons. He collapsed during a game at Grand Rapids on March 24 and died two days later. NCAAMBB – Michigan’s Matthews forgoing NBA draft, staying in school
Michigan’s Charles Matthews is removing his name from consideration for the NBA draft. Matthews announced his decision Wednesday, saying he’s learned a lot through this process. He says he’ll now focus on finishing his education at Michigan and leading his teammates to more success next season. The Wolverines made it to the NCAA title game this year before losing to Villanova. Michigan already lost big man Moe Wagner, who left early for the draft. Matthews declared for the draft without hiring an agent, but he’s now withdrawing. The 6-foot-6 Matthews averaged 13 points a game this past season, his first with the Wolverines after transferring from Kentucky and sitting out a season. He has two seasons of college eligibility remaining.

The PGA Tour is returning to the Detroit area after a 10-year absence. Detroit-based Quicken Loans has signed an agreement to host a new PGA Tour event in the Motor City starting next year. Still to be determined is the name of the tournament and when it will be played, though it likely would be two weeks after the U.S. Open. As part of the deal, the company will retain its title sponsorship of the Quicken Loans National this summer, the tournament outside Washington that is run by the Tiger Woods Foundation.
