Tigers 3, White Sox 1 – Tigers beat White Sox 3-1 for 5th straight win
Nicholas Castellanos homered and Blaine Hardy pitched one-run ball into the sixth, leading the Detroit Tigers over the Chicago White Sox 3-1 on Sunday for their fifth straight win. Jose Iglesias added an RBI single as Detroit improved to 8-1 against the White Sox this season, including 6-0 at Guaranteed Rate Field. Matt Davidson hit his 12th homer and Kevan Smith had two hits for Chicago, which has dropped four straight. Castellanos homered twice on Saturday and connected again in his first at-bat Sunday. Before Saturday, he was mired in a 1-for-21 slump over the previous five games. Hardy (3-1) allowed one run on six hits in 5 1/3 innings. He has given up two runs or less in six of his seven starts. With closer Shane Greene unavailable after pitching four straight days, Joe Jimenez struck out the side in the ninth for his second save. White Sox starter James Shields (2-8) allowed three runs on six hits in six-plus innings.

Cardinals 5, Cubs 0 – Flaherty, Carpenter help Cardinals shut down Cubs 5-0
Jack Flaherty and four relievers combined on a four-hitter, Matt Carpenter homered and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 5-0 on Sunday night.  Flaherty allowed just two hits while striking out seven in five innings, but he walked three and hit two batters and was pulled after throwing 97 pitches. He escaped a jam in the third inning when he struck out Kris Bryant with the bases loaded to keep the game scoreless.  John Brebbia (1-1) worked around two hits in a scoreless sixth inning to earn his first major league win. Austin Gomber, Jordan Hicks and Bud Norris each pitched a hitless inning to finish the shutout. It ended the Cardinals’ season-high four-game losing streak and prevented the Cubs from getting their first series sweep in St. Louis since Sept. 13-15, 2010.  Harrison Bader, Tommy Pham, and Marcell Ozuna strung together singles to open the sixth inning. Pham’s single extended his hitting streak to a National League-best 11 games to chase Jose Quintana (6-5) from the game.

Golf – PGA – Back-to-back US Open crowns for Koepka
Brooks Koepka will spend another year as the reigning U.S. Open champion. Koepka is the first player to successfully defend his U.S. Open title since Curtis Strange in 1989, finishing one stroke ahead of a hard-charging Tommy Fleetwood. The 28-year-old Koepka closed with a 2-under 68 for a 1-over total at unforgiving Shinnecock Hills. He won last year’s event at Erin Hills with a 16 under total. Koepka seized control with a wedge to 31/2 feet for birdie on the par-5 16th for a two-shot lead. He closed with a bogey after pulling his approach off the grandstand, but Fleetwood’s late hiccup took the pressure off Koepka. Fleetwood moved into contention by becoming the sixth player to shoot 63 in the major, carding eight birdies and a bogey. He began the round six strokes back after firing a 78 on Saturday, and he came within a missed 8-foot birdie putt on 18 to force a playoff and set a tournament record for lowest score in a single round. Dustin Johnson shot an even-par 70 to finish two shots back and one ahead of Patrick Reed, who closed with a 68.

Golf – LPGA – So Yeon Ryu wins Meijer LPGA Classic
So Yeon Ryu won the Meijer LPGA Classic for her first victory of the season and sixth overall. She closed with a 5-under 67 for a two-stroke margin over Caroline Masson. Ryu began the final round two shots back before carding six birdies and a bogey.

Candace Parker added 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Sparks (8-2), who won their fourth straight and stayed atop the WNBA standings. The Sparks opened the third quarter with a 16-2 run to lead 55-35 on Gray’s free throws with 4:59 left in the period.  Los Angeles kept the lead between 15 and 20 until a late Chicago run closed the deficit to nine in the final two minutes. The Sky (3-7) led 27-18 early in the second quarter, but the Sparks rallied with 21 straight points and led 39-33 at halftime. Jamierra Faulkner had 19 points for the Sky, who lost their fourth straight.
