White Sox 17, Tigers 7 – Hit parade: White Sox pound out 25, rout Tigers 17-7
Avisail Garcia went 5 for 5 and drove in a career-high seven runs, Yoan Moncada scored five times and the Chicago White Sox pounded out 25 hits Thursday while routing the Detroit Tigers 17-7. The White Sox posted their highest hit total since getting 26 against Baltimore in 1981. The modern major league record for hits in a nine-inning game is 31, by Milwaukee in 1992 and the New York Giants in 1901. Garcia and Moncada each homered, and Jose Abreu added three hits. Moncada had four hits and walked twice. The rookie had a chance to become the first White Sox player to reach base seven times in a nine-inning game, but struck out in the ninth.  Chicago has won five of six. Detroit has lost six in a row.

Cubs 14, Mets 6 – Rizzo, Heyward lead surging Cubs to sweep of Mets, 14-6
Anthony Rizzo homered and had three hits, Jason Heyward went deep and drove in four and the Chicago Cubs beat the New York Mets 14-6 on Thursday night. Chicago’s offense helped overcome a shaky debut by pitcher Jen-Ho Tseng to complete a three-game sweep. The Cubs outscored the Mets 39-14 this week after being outscored 20-3 in a weekend three-game sweep by the Milwaukee Brewers.  Kris Bryant added two RBIs as the Cubs extended their NL Central lead to three games over Milwaukee and St. Louis, with the Cardinals coming to Wrigley Field for three games this weekend. Tseng allowed five runs in three innings. Mike Montgomery (6-8) and Brian Duensing followed Tseng with two scoreless innings each.

MLB – Walk-off hit keeps streak alive
Jay Bruce delivered a walk-off double in the bottom of the 10th to give the Cleveland Indians their American League-record 22nd consecutive victory, 3-2 against Kansas City. The Indians were down to their final strike in the ninth before Francisco Lindor came through with an RBI double to extend the game. It’s the second-longest winning streak in major league history, four off the all-time mark set by the 1916 Giants.

He was 15 of 24 for 125 yards and no interceptions while also running five times for 67 yards on his 22nd birthday. Watson’s TD broke a 3-3 tie late in the first half.

NFL – Beckham practices
The New York Giants could have their top deep threat on the field for Monday’s game against the Detroit Lions. Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. practiced on a limited basis Thursday for the
first time since spraining his left ankle more than three weeks ago. The three-time Pro Bowler took part in some individualized drills and followed that by participating in some team drills.

NFL – NFL streaming service says it has no excuses for poor debut
A streaming service that offers all National Football League games in Canada says it resolved many of its issues following a woeful debut.  DAZN said in a statement Thursday there are “no excuses” and said the debut did not go as planned.  Canadians wanting to watch any NFL game they want must subscribe to the UK-based service. Some NFL games remain on cable television, but viewers must subscribe to DAZN to get all of the games.  Viewers took to social media to complain of poor picture quality Some say it didn’t work at all. Others cited audio glitches. The company blamed the audio on “human error.” DAZN _ pronounced Da Zone _ says the “error codes subscribers were seeing have been resolved” and says it will reach out to customers.

NCAA Football – Harbaugh believes in Speight
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh appears to be growing impatient with questions about quarterback Wilton Speight. When asked a follow-up question about third-string quarterback Brandon Peters, Harbaugh shook his head and rolled his eyes. The seventh-ranked Wolverines do not appear to have a quarterback controversy because Harbaugh seems to believe Speight gives them their best chance of winning, including on Saturday against Air Force. Falcons coach Troy Calhoun doesn’t see a lot of weaknesses.

NCAA – NCAA looking to reform transfer rules
The NCAA is moving toward reforming transfer rules. There is much work to be done and any drastic changes are likely a few years away. But change is coming, and guiding principals have been established by the university presidents that make up the NCAA board of directors. New transfer rules will be rooted in academics, and could give higher achieving students more freedom while limiting who might be less likely to graduate if they switch schools.

Golf – Leishman opens with a 62 to lead BMW Championship
Marc Leishman left his clubs in the garage during his week break from the FedEx Cup playoffs and it didn’t make a difference. He had 10 birdies in his opening round of 9-under 62 and built a two-shot lead in the BMW Championship. Leishman finished third two weeks ago at the TPC Boston and moved to No. 7 in the FedEx Cup. His goal is to get into the top five going into the final event at the Tour Championship. Jason Day, playing for the first time using a high school friend as his caddie, was 7 under for his last 11 holes and shot 64. Jamie Lovemark and Charley Hoffman also opened at 64.      Jordan Spieth had a bogey-free 65, while Phil Mickelson shot 66.

WNBA – Lynx center Sylvia Fowles selected WNBA MVP
Minnesota Lynx center Sylvia Fowles has been named the WNBA’s most valuable player. The league announced the award Thursday before the Lynx hosted Washington in Game 2 of their best-of-five semifinal series. Fowles received 35 of 40 first-place votes from a media panel. Fowles averaged 18.9 points, 10.4 rebounds and 2.0 blocks to lead the Lynx to a 27-7 record and the top seed in the playoffs. She also shot 65.5 percent from the field, leading the WNBA in shooting percentage for the fifth time in her career.  New York’s Tina Charles finished second in the voting. Los Angeles Sparks star Candace Parker was third.
