MLB – Schwarber won’t play field at Wrigley Field this weekend
Cubs star Kyle Schwarber won’t be in the starting lineup for the three World Series games this weekend after he was denied medical clearance to play the outfield following his return from knee surgery. Schwarber tore a pair of knee ligaments on April 7 and returned in Tuesday’s Series opener. He was 3 for 7 with a double, two RBIs and two walks as the designated hitter in the first two games at Cleveland, but with the shift to Wrigley Field, there will be no DH.  Chicago president of baseball operations Theo Epstein says it’s too soon after the injury for Schwarber’s knee to be fully tested, especially with quick moves required to play the outfield. He says: “There was too much risk.” Schwarber will be used as a pinch hitter. He says it’s “not disappointing at all” and “it was a long shot at the most.”

MLB – DH Santana set to move to left for Indians
The Indians will likely start designated hitter Carlos Santana in left field in Game 3. Because they’re playing in a National League ballpark, the Indians are prepared to put Santana out in left at Wrigley Field, where he’ll have to deal with the wind and the rowdy bleacher crowd never mind the pressure. Indians manager Terry Francona said it gives his team the best chance to win.

Bulls 105, Celtics 99 – Wade scores 22 in Chicago debut, Bulls beat Celtics 105-99
Dwyane Wade scored 22 points in a triumphant Chicago debut, Jimmy Butler had 24 and the Bulls won their season opener, beating the Boston Celtics 105-99 on Thursday night. Wade nailed a 3 from the corner in the final minute to make it a five-point game. Taj Gibson added 18 points and 10 rebounds, and the new-look Bulls got off to a winning start after missing the playoffs last season for the first time since 2008. Isaiah Thomas led Boston with 25 points. Avery Bradley had 16, and Jae Crowder 14 points, but the Celtics came up short after opening with a win over Brooklyn the previous night. The Bulls remade their roster in the offseason, jettisoning one hometown superstar and welcoming another when they traded Derrick Rose to New York and signed Wade to a two-year deal worth about $47 million in a move that stunned Miami. The three-time NBA champion and 12-time All-Star is off to a good start with the Bulls after 13 seasons with the Heat. Wade hit 4 of 6 3-pointers in this game after making just seven all of last season.

NBA – Pistons in talks about downtown move; no deal yet
The Detroit Pistons could be starting their final season at The Palace of Auburn Hills. The team is in advanced discussions about moving downtown to play at the Detroit Red Wings’ new arena, according to a person with knowledge of the talks. The person, speaking on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the Pistons have not commented, said there is no deal yet, but that the intent would be for the NBA franchise to start playing downtown next season if possible. Representatives from the Pistons and Olympia Entertainment have been involved in the talks. Olympia handles business operations for the Red Wings, who are owned by Mike and Marian Ilitch.

Red Wings 2, Blues 1 – SO – Detroit defeats St. Louis after marathon shootout

In the shootout, St. Louis’ first shooter, Alexander Steen, scored but then Vladimir Tarasenko, Kevin Shattenkirk, David Perron, Nail Yakupoc, Robby Fabbri, Patrick Burgland and Dmitrjij Jaskin all came up short. Gustav Nyquist scored on Detroit’s second attempt but Frans Nielsen, Dylan Larkin, Andreas Athanasiou, Tomas Tatar, Riley Sheehan and Darren Helm all missed.  St. Louis had the better chances in overtime. Center Jaden Schwartz missed a wide-open net early in the extra session. Jori Lehtera was stopped on a breakaway midway through the period by Detroit goalie Petr Mrazek.

NCAAFB – For Miami’s Mark Richt, there’s little time for nostalgia
Miami coach Mark Richt had one meeting after another after another on Thursday afternoon, and none of them was related to the game plan for the Hurricanes’ trip to Notre Dame this weekend.   Nostalgia wasn’t on the schedule. As such, there hasn’t been much time to reflect on what was likely Richt’s biggest game in his short time as Miami’s starting quarterback _ a 16-14 loss at Notre Dame in 1982, an outcome he blamed himself for _ or the storied rivalry between the Hurricanes and the Fighting Irish.  Miami (4-3) is trying to stop a three-game slide. Notre Dame (2-5) is seeking to merely hang on to some realistic hope of being bowl-eligible at season’s end. Neither team is ranked, the first time that’s happened in a regular-season game between the Hurricanes and Irish since 1979.  Some of the details from Richt’s lone time as a starter at Notre Dame have gotten fuzzy. The pertinent ones, they remain indelibly etched in his mind.
