Colts 33, Texans 28 – Colts outlast Texans
Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts had a great first quarter and did just enough the rest of the way to hold on for a 33-28 victory over the Houston Texans on Thursday night. The Colts raced to a 24-0 lead after one quarter, but allowed Houston to cut it to 33-28 early in the fourth quarter on J.J. Watt’s fumble return for a touchdown. The Texans had two opportunities to take the lead late, but the Colts recovered fumbles by Andre Johnson and Ryan Fitzpatrick in the last five minutes. Luck finished with 370 yards passing and a three touchdowns and T.Y. Hilton had a career-high 223 yards receiving with a touchdown to give Indy first place in the AFC South.

NFL – Peterson’s bond could be revoked
Texas prosecutors have filed a motion to revoke Adrian Peterson’s bond and have the Vikings running back re-arrested after he allegedly admitted to smoking marijuana while he is awaiting trial on a felony child abuse charge. Peterson allegedly told a worker conducting his urinalysis exam during a Wednesday court appearance that “he smoked a little weed.”

NFL – Teen with laser pointer banned from Lions games
The Detroit Lions have barred a teenager from all Ford Field events for using a laser pointer at a game against the Bills. Buffalo quarterback Kyle Orton and holder Colton Schmidt said they had a laser directed at them during a 17-14 win over the Lions on Sunday. Detroit city attorney Melvin Hollowell identified the alleged offender as a 17-year-old from West Bloomfield, Michigan. He says the teen will be ticketed for disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor. The teen was using a ticket held by a season-ticket holder. The Lions are revoking that person’s tickets for the rest of the season. In a statement Thursday, Lions President Tom Lewand says the laser pointer could have affected the “integrity of the game” and hurt players.

NHL – National Hockey League
Last Night
Detroit Red Wings 2, Boston Bruins 1
Chicago Blackhawks 3, Dallas Stars 2 – Shootout

Red Wings 2, Bruins 1 – Red Wings open with a win, edge Bruins 2-1
Gustav Nyquist’s power-play goal in the second period lifted Detroit to a 2-1 victory over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night in the Red Wings’ season opener. Justin Abdelkader also scored for Detroit, which lost to the Bruins in the first round of last season’s playoffs. Patrice Bergeron scored Boston’s only goal Thursday. Jimmy Howard had 16 saves for the Red Wings. Detroit was without star forward Pavel Datsyuk, who is recovering from a separated shoulder. The Red Wings outshot Boston 24-17. The Bruins managed only nine shots on goal through the first two periods.

Blackhawks 3, Stars 2 – SO – Blackhawks top Stars 3-2 in shootout in opener
Patrick Sharp scored the tying goal in the third period, Patrick Kane had the only goal in the shootout and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Dallas Stars 3-2 Thursday night. The Stars had turned away several good scoring chances for the high-scoring duo of Kane and Jonathan Toews before Sharp beat Kari Lehtonen 11:10 into the third. Kane beat Lehtonen high on the glove side in the shootout. Corey Crawford stopped Dallas tries from Tyler Seguin and newcomers Jason Spezza and Ales Hemsky. The Stars opened on the same ice where last season ended in a first-round playoff series against Anaheim. Chicago lost Game 7 of the Western Conference finals to the Los Angeles Kings.

The Chicago Cubs have hired John Mallee as their hitting coach after Bill Mueller resigned this week. The Cubs also hired Doug Dascenzo on Thursday as first base and outfield coach, with Eric Hinske shifting from that job to assistant hitting coach. Mallee, a Chicago native, served as the hitting coach for the Miami Marlins and Houston Astros. The Astros finished last in the American League with a .242 average but were third in homers with 163. Dascenzo was drafted by the Cubs in 1985 and played for them from 1988 to 1992. He served as the third base coach for Atlanta this season, his first as a coach in the majors.

NCAA Football – Kelly says five academic fraud players won’t play Saturday
Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly says the five players held out of practices and the first five games of the season because of an academic dishonesty investigation will not be available Saturday when the sixth-ranked Irish host North Carolina. Cornerback KeiVarae Russell, receiver DaVaris Daniels, defensive end Ishaq Williams, linebacker Kendall Moore and defensive back Eilar Hardy have been held out since August. The school has been investigating whether the players submitted papers and homework that had been written for them by others. Kelly says none of the five players practiced this week. The university issued a statement Sunday from spokesman Paul Browne, saying that hearings had been completed on Oct. 3 and the players would be informed about the decisions as soon as deliberations on each case were done.

Pistons 94, Bucks 80 – Caldwell-Pope, Drummond lead Pistons past Bucks
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 20 points, Andre Drummond added 15 points and 16 rebounds, and the Detroit Pistons beat the Milwaukee Bucks 94-80 on Thursday night in a preseason game. Former Pistons Khris Middleton and Brandon Knight led Milwaukee, which turned the ball over 23 times for 26 Detroit points. Caldwell-Pope had 18 points off the bench in Detroit’s overtime win over Chicago on Tuesday, while Drummond added 13, but both players had their defensive performances criticized by Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy. Against the Bucks, Caldwell-Pope moved into the starting lineup when Jodie Meeks was sidelined by back spasms, while Drummond was a reserve as Van Gundy experiments with his post rotation of Drummond, Josh Smith and Greg Monroe.
