NFL – Chicago Bears hire Ryan Poles as general manager
Ryan Poles has been hired as Chicago’s general manager almost 15 years after the former offensive tackle signed with the team as an undrafted free agent and then failed to make the final roster. Poles spent the previous 13 seasons in the Chiefs’ front office, the past year as executive director of player personnel. He was the team’s director of college scouting in 2017 when Kansas City drafted Patrick Mahomes with the No. 10 overall pick — after Chicago took Mitchell Trubisky at No. 2. Poles succeeds Ryan Pace as the Bears’ GM, and the team has yet to hire a coach to replace Matt Nagy. Poles interviewed Jim Caldwell for the coaching job on Tuesday.

NFL – Saints’ Sean Payton steps down as coach after 16 years
New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton, whose 16-year tenure with the club included its only Super Bowl championship and also a one-season suspension stemming from the NFL’s bounty investigation, is leaving coaching. Payton informed the team on Tuesday that he is stepping down from his first and only NFL head coaching job with a 152-89 regular-season record — and nine playoff appearances — in 15 seasons. The 2009 Saints won the NFL title. Payton says he doesn’t “know what’s next and it kind of feels good.” Payton says he could coach again, but not likely in the coming season because that’s not where his heart is.

NFL – Rodgers says once he retires, he won’t make any comeback
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers says he can’t envision a scenario in which he comes out of retirement once he ends his playing career. Rodgers has said he hasn’t decided whether to return to the Packers, pursue a trade or retire. The three-time MVP went into more details about his future Tuesday on “The Pat McAfee Show” on YouTube and SiriusXM. Rodgers said that “one thing I would not do, 100% not do, is retire and then come back a year later.”

David Ortiz was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first turn on the ballot, while steroid-tainted stars Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens were denied entry to Cooperstown in their final year under consideration by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. MLB – MLB drops arbitration cuts after union holds on free agents
Major League Baseball withdrew its plan for more limited salary arbitration a day after the union withdrew its demand for greater free agent eligibility. The move was made during the second straight day of talks aimed at an agreement to end a lockout that started Dec. 2. The clubs also accepted the union’s framework to funnel additional money to pre-arbitration-eligible players from central revenue, offering a $10 million pool. The incremental progress was positive given the sides didn’t even speak about central economic issues for six weeks before talks resumed Jan. 13.

FIFA – Cold play: Hats, gloves, long pants for US WCup qualifier
Long pants, gloves and some hats were in use as the U.S. prepared for Thursday night’s World Cup qualifier in 19 degree weather in Columbus, Ohio. World Cup qualifying this month is a Cold War even chillier than “La Guerra Fria,” the 2-0 win over Mexico in 2001 at old Columbus Crew Stadium. That qualifier was played in 29 degrees, the same temperature as the infamous Snow Clasico, a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica in 2013. Thursday night’s match against El Salvador at new lower.com Field is likely to set a record low temperature for a U.S. home qualifier.

Tennis – Australian Open – Second day of quarterfinals
Danielle Collins has joined fellow American Madison Keys in the Australian Open semifinals.
