Twins 5, Tigers 3 – Wallner grand slam overshadows Cabrera’s 509th homer; Twins beat Tigers 5-3
Matt Wallner hit a grand slam to cap a five-run sixth inning and the Minnesota Twins overshadowed another milestone homer by Miguel Cabrera in a 5-3 win against the Detroit Tigers. Wallner’s slam was the ninth homer in 38 games for the rookie. Cabrera hit a two-run homer in the second for his 509th career home run, equaling former teammate Gary Sheffield for 26th on the all-time list with just his second homer of the season. Reliever Dylan Floro earned his first win with Minnesota. Jhoan Duran earned his 22nd save. Tigers reliever José Cisnero took the loss.
White Sox 5, Cubs 3 – Luis Robert Jr. homers in return as Chicago White Sox top Chicago Cubs 5-3
Luis Robert Jr. hit a tiebreaking solo homer in his return to the lineup, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Chicago Cubs 5-3. Robert drove a hanging slider from Julian Merryweather deep to left with two out in the seventh inning, giving the White Sox a 4-3 lead at a packed Wrigley Field. It was Robert’s team-high 32nd homer. The All-Star outfielder finished with two hits in his first start since he sprained his right pinky finger during last week’s 9-2 victory over the New York Yankees. Back home after a 3-3 road trip, the Cubs wasted a chance to improve their positioning in the NL wild-card standings. Philadelphia, Miami and Cincinnati all lost.

MLB – Miguel Cabrera hits 509th homer, tying Gary Sheffield for 26th all-time
Miguel Cabrera hit his 509th career homer on Tuesday night, tying Gary Sheffield for 26th all-time. The Detroit Tigers designated hitter, who has said this will be his last season, opened the scoring in the second inning at Minnesota with a 438-foot, two-run shot to left field off Twins right-hander Bailey Ober. It was Cabrera’s second homer of the season. Next on the career list is Mel Ott with 511. His 1,867 RBIs are the 12th most all-time, one behind Ott. Cabrera has 3,146 hits in his 21-year career, currently 20th. Cabrera was showered with gifts before his final series at Target Field. The Twins honored him with a donation to his foundation, a custom fishing rod, No. 24-branded fishing hat, a tackle box and a commemorative hockey stick.
MLB – Chicago Cubs right-hander Marcus Stroman dealing with some right rib discomfort
Chicago Cubs right-hander Marcus Stroman is dealing with some right rib discomfort, delaying his return from the injured list. Stroman was placed on the 15-day IL on Aug. 2 with right hip inflammation. The All-Star was slated to start Wednesday against the White Sox, but manager David Ross says Stroman had some discomfort in the rib area after throwing a bullpen session Sunday in Toronto. Stroman was getting checked out for the issue, and there was no further update. Ross says Javier Assad “more than likely” will start the series finale against the South Siders.
MLB – Cubs minor league pitcher Mosquea suspended 56 games for positive drug test
Chicago Cubs pitcher Dalbert Mosquea was suspended for 56 games Tuesday under baseball’s minor league drug program following a positive test for the performance-enhancing substance Stanozolol. The 18-year-old right-hander signed with the Cubs in June and was 0-3 with a 3.14 ERA and one save in nine relief appearances in the Dominican Summer League.
MLB/NWSL – Cubs co-owner Laura Ricketts leads group to purchase NWSL’s Red Stars
Chicago Cubs co-owner Laura Ricketts is leading a group that has agreed to purchase the National Women’s Soccer League’s Chicago Red Stars. Ricketts says she is “honored” to lead a group comprised mostly of female Chicago business leaders purchasing the team. The deal is pending approval of the NWSL Board of Governors. Ricketts is part of a group that purchased a roughly 10% stake in the WNBA’s Chicago Sky in June. Red Stars owner Arnim Whisler announced in December he is selling his stake in the team following an investigation that found emotional abuse and sexual misconduct were systemic in the league. Whisler’s decision came two months after the team’s board of directors voted to remove him as chairman and forbid him from participation in team operations.
NHL – Red Wings acquire defenseman Jeff Petry in a trade with the Canadiens
The Detroit Red Wings have added another veteran player late in a busy offseason by acquiring defenseman Jeff Petry from the Montreal Canadiens. Detroit got Petry at less than half his salary in exchange for a conditional 2025 fourth-round pick and 24-year-old defenseman Gustav Lindstrom. The Canadiens just acquired Petry from Pittsburgh earlier this month in the trade that sent three-time Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson from the Sharks to the Penguins. Petry had previously spent seven-plus seasons with the Canadiens before being dealt to Pittsburgh last year and did not figure to be in their plans. Petry, 35, is a native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, whose father Dan pitched 13 years in the majors and helped the Detroit Tigers win the 1984 World Series. He has four young boys of his own now, and Hughes was conscious of trying to get something done before the new schoolyear started.
NFL – Anthony Richardson named Colts’ starting QB for opener against Jaguars
The Indianapolis Colts have seen enough of rookie Anthony Richardson to name him their opening day starting quarterback. Coach Shane Steichen made the announcement three days after the former Florida star delivered a solid performance against Buffalo in the Colts’ preseason opener. It’s the seventh consecutive year Indy will have a new starter in Week 1. The No. 4 overall pick in this year’s NFL draft beat out veteran Gardner Minshew for the job. Minshew signed with Indy as a free agent during the offseason.
