The New York Yankees won consecutive games for the first time in four weeks, beating the Detroit Tigers 4-2 as Gleyber Torres homered for the second night in a row. Kyle Higashioka and Anthony Volpe also homered for the Yankees, who had not won back-to-back games since Aug, 2 against Tampa Bay and the next day against Houston. Last-place New York, in danger of ending its streak of 30 consecutive winning seasons, has two chances against the Tigers to end its run of 10 winless series. Detroit (59-73) has lost four straight.
Orioles 9, White Sox 3 – Anthony Santander’s go-ahead 3-run double sends Orioles to 9-3 victory over White Sox
Anthony Santander hit a go-ahead three-run double in the seventh inning, and the AL-best Baltimore Orioles defeated the Chicago White Sox 9-3 to match their victory total from last season. Baltimore, has won nine of 11 and remained 2 1/2 games ahead of Tampa Bay in the AL East. In the seventh, pinch-hitter Ryan McKenna singled and stole second, and Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson followed with walks. Santander then poked an opposite-field shot past first and that rattled into the right field corner off Aaron Bummer. Lenyn Sosa hit his third homer in five games for Chicago, which has lost 12 of 17.
Cubs 1, Brewers 0 – Justin Steele stars as the Cubs stop the Brewers’ 9-game winning streak with 1-0 victory
Justin Steele struck out eight in six effective innings, shaking off a comebacker that hit him on his left leg, and the Chicago Cubs stopped Milwaukee’s nine-game win streak with a 1-0 victory over Corbin Burnes and the Brewers. Steele allowed six hits and walked one, throwing 80 of his career-high 111 pitches for strikes. The All-Star left-hander improved to 6-0 with a 3.09 ERA in his last eight starts. Bouncing back from a 6-2 loss in the series opener, Chicago pulled within four games of NL Central-leading Milwaukee. The Brewers had seven hits and went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position in their first loss since Aug. 17.

MLB – Acuña’s encounter and Sox shooting raise questions about safety of players & fans
A shooting that likely happened inside of Guaranteed Rate Field, followed by a scary moment for Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr. in Colorado. Both in a span of four days. While Major League Baseball is on track for a marked increase in attendance this year, the pair of high-profile incidents raised questions about the safety of players and fans inside and outside of big league ballparks. A spokeswoman for the Major League Baseball Players Association said Tuesday that the union takes player safety “very seriously” and that it reviews club and stadium protocols throughout every season “to mitigate the possibility of similar future incidents.” Acuña had an encounter with two fans during Atlanta’s 14-4 win over Colorado on Monday night.

Kahleah Copper scored eight of her 22 points in the final 6:04, including two field goals in the closing 45 seconds, to help the Chicago Sky beat the Los Angeles Sparks 76-75 on Tuesday night. Chicago (15-21) moved within a half-game of eighth-place Los Angeles (15-20) with a handful of games left in the regular season. Copper ended Los Angeles’ 9-0 run on a layup with 44.5 seconds left to give Chicago a 74-72 lead. But Karlie Samuelson answered with her second 3-pointer in less than two minutes to give the Sparks a 75-74 lead with 38.1 left. Copper made a contested layup in the lane to put Chicago ahead 76-75 with 22.8 seconds left. Los Angeles had three chances but couldn’t get a shot to drop.
NFL – Bears’ revamped defense has been hit hard by injuries in camp, preseason
The Chicago Bears have revamped their defense after finishing near the bottom of the league on that side of the ball last season. Coach Matt Eberflus believes those efforts were successful, but he needs to see his defensive starters playing together. Injuries have prevented Chicago’s full first-team defense from taking the field since training camp began. Eberflus says the only injured player on either side of the ball who’s a question mark for the season opener is left guard Teven Jenkins. Among the players who’ve missed significant time are Yannick Ngakoue and DeMarcus Walker.
Tennis – US Open – Venus Williams suffers her most lopsided US Open loss
Venus Williams’ 100th career U.S. Open match produced her most lopsided loss at the Grand Slam tournament where she won the trophy in 2000 and 2001. Williams was eliminated 6-1, 6-1 by Belgian qualifier Greet Minnen at Arthur Ashe Stadium in the first round on Tuesday night. At 43, Williams is the oldest player in the field. The first 21 times Williams entered the U.S. Open, she went 21-0 in the first round. But this was her third consecutive opening-round loss at Flushing Meadows. The 26-year-old Minnen was born in August 1997, the month before Williams reached the U.S. Open final for the first time.
Tennis – ‘Like Snoop Dogg’s living room’: Smell of pot wafts over U.S. Open court
The smell of marijuana has become a stink at the U.S. Open. One court in particular is notorious for smelling, as one player put it, “like Snoop Dogg’s living room.” Court 17 is located in the extreme southwest corner of the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, adjacent to Corona Park, and players and security staffers alike believe the park is the source of the smell. Eighth-seeded Maria Sakkari complained about the odor during and after her first-round loss on Monday. But there may not be much the United States Tennis Association can do. It’s legal in New York for adults 21 and older to possess cannabis, and they can smoke or vape it wherever smoking tobacco is allowed.
Golf – US Ryder Cup team adds familiar picks with Fowler and Thomas. LIV player Koepka
Zach Johnson has filled out his U.S. Ryder Cup team with some familiar faces. He has added Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler among his six captain’s picks. Another choice of his is LIV Golf player and five-time major champion Brooks Koepka. He’s the only non-PGA Tour member on the U.S. team. The others are Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa and Sam Burns. This will be Sam Burns’ first Ryder Cup. Thomas is the known as the American spark in the Ryder Cup. But he finished 15th in the standings. And he didn’t qualify for the PGA Tour postseason.
NCAAFB – So far, Auburn QB Payton Thorne a good fit for the Tigers after leaving MSU
Payton Thorne is adapting well to life in the South, and to the Auburn offense. The graduate transfer from Michigan State has quickly settled in as Hugh Freeze’s starting quarterback. Thorne will make his first start for the Tigers on Saturday against UMass. Freeze and the Tigers hope he will help turn around a passing game that was the Southeastern Conference’s worst last season. A two-year team captain at Michigan State, Thorne beat out incumbent starter Robby Ashford in preseason camp despite not arriving until after spring. Ashford’s status for the opener is uncertain with an oblique strain.
Big Ten –Big Ten ending divisions giving west teams have a last prime shot at a title
The Big Ten’s prestige and power has been firmly grounded in the East Division with all nine conference champions in the current format and eight participants in the College Football Playoff. The West Division has been the place to be for competitive balance with four different winners in the last four years. That makes this season a unique opportunity for Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Purdue and Wisconsin and their inviting path to the Big Ten title game. The divisional format will disappear next season when Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington are admitted to what will be an 18-team super conference.

MHSAA – Two SW Michigan athletes make NFL Rosters
There are two Southwest Michigan high school graduates who made an NFL roster at yesterday’s cut down day. St. Joseph and Western Michigan gradate Wes French has made the Indianapolis Colts roster for a second straight year. An offensive lineman, French was an undrafted free agent for the Colts last year. Dowagiac and Ferris State alumni Caleb Murphy, who was also undrafted, was able to secure a spot on the Tennessee Titans 53 man roster. Murphy, and outside linebacker was a two time national champion with Ferris State was the 2022 GLIAC player of the year
