The 29-year-old will initially back up Jake Rogers, but Hinch said the both could wind up splitting duties.

Jaguars 25, Lions 7 – Jaguars beat Lions 25-7 in preseason matchup featuring backups on both teams

Beathard filled in for Trevor Lawrence as most of the starters for both teams watched the preseason game to avoid injuries. Beathard was 12 of 20 for 138 yards. He threw an interception along with the touchdown pass to Washington, a rookie receiver, that put Jacksonville ahead 12-0 at halftime. Teddy Bridgewater was shaky in his Lions debut while surrounded by backups.

Colts 24, Bears 17 – Richardson, Fields sit out as Ehlinger rallies Colts past Bears, 24-17
Sam Ehlinger directed two fourth-quarter touchdown drives and Jake Funk’s late 4-yard TD run gave the Indianapolis Colts a 24-17 comeback victory over the Chicago Bears on Saturday night. Neither of the two feature attractions — Bears quarterback Justin Fields or Colts rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson — played. The two coaches — Chicago’s Matt Eberflus and Indianapolis’ Shane Steichen — also opted against using most key players after the teams held two joint practices this week. But Gardner Minshew and Ehlinger, the Colts’ backup quarterbacks, and quarterback Tyson Bagent, Chicago’s undrafted rookie, all played well. Both teams are 1-1.

Golf – PGA – Hovland sets Olympia Fields record with 61 to win BMW Championship
Viktor Hovland had the best round of his career at a good time. He set the course record at Olympia Fields with a 61. That included making seven birdies on the back nine Sunday to rally past Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick. Scheffler still goes to the Tour Championship as the No. 1 seed. Jordan Spieth also is going to East Lake, but just barely. He finished bogey-bogey and needed a late blunder by Denny McCarthy and Sahith Theegala to stay just inside the top 30. Xander Schauffele earned the sixth and final Ryder Cup spot, knocking out Brooks Koepka.

NCAAFB -With super conferences and CFP expansion on horizon, 2023 is the end of an era
Welcome to the final season of college football as we know it. That might sound extreme, but 2023 has an end-of-an-era feel. Texas and Oklahoma are taking their last lap in the Big 12. The Pac-12 is still a Power Five conference. Will it even be a conference in 2024? The College Football Playoff is a four-team event for the last time this year, before tripling in size. Before the maps are redrawn and the stakes are remade, there is one more season to left to appreciate what is being lost — or long for what’s being gained.
