Tigers 5, Guardians 2 – Miguel Cabrera closes careers as Tigers beat Guardians 5-2
Miguel Cabrera made a backhanded stop, stepped on first base and smiled in the eighth inning on the final play of his career after walking in his last at-bat and the Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Guardians 5-2 Sunday He played on defense for the first time since 2021 and entered the game at first base in the eighth, when he was the only player on the field for a couple minutes as players from both teams showed deference to one of the game’s all-time greats.  The only player to win the Triple Crown in more than a half-century went 0 for 3 with a walk, but that didn’t diminish the celebration.

Brewers 4, Cubs 0 – Taylor homers, Houser pitches NL Central champion Brewers past Cubs 4-0 in final tune-up
Tyrone Taylor homered and Adrian Houser pitched five sharp innings as the NL Central champion Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 4-0 in their final playoff tune-up. After wrapping up their third division title in six years last week, the Brewers will host the Arizona Diamondbacks in a best-of-three postseason series beginning Tuesday. Chicago heads home for the winter after falling short down the stretch in a crowded NL wild-card race. Cody Bellinger and the Cubs were eliminated from contention Saturday night, despite a 10-6 win over the Brewers, when Miami finished its 7-3 victory at Pittsburgh to secure a wild card.

Padres 2, White Sox 1 – F/11 – Profar drives in winning run in 11th as Padres beat 101-loss White Sox 2-1
Jurickson Profar had two hits and drove in the go-ahead run in the 11th, leading the San Diego Padres over the Chicago White Sox 2-1 to complete their season with a sweep after missing the playoffs. Profar singled off Declan Cronin to score automatic runner José Azocar to put the Padres ahead in the 11th. Rich Hill allowed an unearned run and two hits in two innings for the Padres, who were eliminated from playoff contention Friday. Zach Remillard had three hits for the White Sox, who reached 100 losses Saturday for the fifth time.

MLB – Tim Wakefield, who revived his career and Red Sox with knuckleball, has died at 57
Tim Wakefield, the knuckleballing workhorse of the Red Sox pitching staff who bounced back after giving up a season-ending home run to the Yankees in the 2003 playoffs to help Boston win its curse-busting World Series title the following year, has died. He was 57. The Red Sox announced his death in a statement Sunday. Wakefield had brain cancer, according to ex-teammate Curt Schilling, who outed the illness on a podcast last week — drawing an outpouring of support for Wakefield. The Red Sox confirmed an illness at the time but did not elaborate, saying Wakefield had requested privacy.

MLB – Buck Showalter fired as New York Mets manager
Buck Showalter was fired as New York Mets manager after a disappointing season in which baseball’s highest-spending team tumbled from contention by midsummer. The 67-year-old Showalter said before Sunday’s game against Philadelphia that he will not return next year, and a few minutes later the fourth-place Mets said the team had decided on the change. New York entered 74-86 and 29 1/2 games behind NL East champion Atlanta. The Mets are expected to hire David Stearns as president of baseball operations above general manager Billy Eppler, and Showalter’s departure with a year remaining on his three-year contract clears the way for Stearns to pick the next manager. Showalter’s exit leaves the Mets searching for a new manager for the fifth time in six years.

Broncos 31, Bears 28 – Russell Wilson throws 3 TDs, Broncos rally from 21 down to top Bears 31-28
Russell Wilson threw for three touchdowns, Wil Lutz kicked a tiebreaking field goal with just under two minutes remaining and the Denver Broncos bounced back from one of the most lopsided losses in franchise history by rallying to beat the Chicago Bears 31-28 on Sunday. Denver was coming off a 70-20 blowout by Miami that was franchise’s second-worst loss of the Super Bowl era, behind only a 51-0 pounding by the Raiders in 1967. Lutz’s 51-yarder capped a comeback from a 28-7, third-quarter deficit. Kareem Jackson then intercepted Justin Fields with the Bears near midfield. The Bears had a chance to break a 28-all tie late in the fourth quarter. Chicago opted to go for it on fourth-and-1 at the 18 rather than kick a field goal. Coach Matt Eberflus was confident the Bears would get the first down because of how effectively they were running the ball. But instead of keeping the drive going, Herbert got stopped.

Rams 29, Colts 23 – OT – Stafford overcomes injury to throw winning TD pass in OT to give Rams 29-23 win
Matthew Stafford overcame a hip injury to throw a 22-yard touchdown pass to record-breaking rookie Puka Nacua in overtime to give the Los Angeles Rams a 29-23 victory at Indianapolis. The Rams have won four straight in the series and the past three in Indy, this time after blowing a 23-point, third-quarter lead. Colts rookie Anthony Richardson rallied the Colts with two TD passes, one scoring run and two 2-point conversion throws. But it wasn’t enough to win their second straight overtime game. The Colts have lost six consecutive home games.

Louis Crevier made it 5-1 at 5:04 of the third period, but Compher scored a power-play goal at 6:17 for the 6-1 final.  Connor Bedard was held without a point.

Golf – Ryder Cup – Ryder Cup in Rome stays right at home for the Europeans
The Ryder Cup is staying in Europe, just like always. Team Europe had a big lead at Marco Simone outside of Rome and made sure it capped off a dominant week. Rory McIlroy won his match to become the leading scorer for Europe for the first time. Tommy Fleetwood delivered the winner by driving the 16th green to assure the half-point Europe needed. The Americans were never really in this Ryder Cup after falling behind big on the first day. They were coming off a 10-point win at Whistling Straits and thought this might be the year they ended three decades of losing on European soil. The final score was 16 1/2-11 1/2.
