Wentz allowed a double and single to start the game before settling in. The left-hander retired 13 of 14 before giving up a pair of walks in the sixth. Ibañez connected in the fifth inning and Riley Greene drove in two runs as the Tigers won for the sixth time in seven games. José Ramírez homered for Cleveland, which has scored three runs or less in 22 of 35 games.

Melendez hit a two-run shot in the fourth against Dylan Cease and then had a two-run single in the sixth as the Royals turned a 4-4 game into a rout. Kansas City had its highest-scoring game this season and won consecutive home games for the first time since last September. Cease gave up seven runs in five-plus innings as his ERA rose to 5.58. Jose Cuas got one out in relief of Zack Greinke for the win.

Cardinals 3, Cubs 1 – Contreras leads Cardinals past Cubs 3-1 in return to Wrigley
Willson Contreras had two hits and two RBIs in his return to Wrigley Field, including a tiebreaking double, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 3-1. St. Louis also got a strong effort from its bullpen in its second straight win after an eight-game losing streak. Génesis Cabrera, Jordan Hicks and Ryan Helsley combined for 4 2/3 innings of one-hit ball in relief of Miles Mikolas. Contreras played for Chicago for seven seasons before departing in free agency, signing an $87.5 million, five-year contract with St. Louis in December.

NHL – Blackhawks win NHL draft lottery, get to pick Connor Bedard
The Chicago Blackhawks have won the NHL draft lottery and the right to select Connor Bedard with the first pick. Chicago had the third-highest odds of winning it at 11.5%. Bedard is considered the top draft-eligible prospect available since Connor McDavid in 2015. Bedard’s 72 goals and 143 points with Regina of the Western Hockey League were the most of any junior hockey player in Canada. League-worst Anaheim won the lottery to pick second and choose among forwards Adam Fantilli from the University of Michigan, Matvei Michkov from Russia and Leo Carlsson from Sweden at the draft June 28 in Nashville. The Detroit Red Wings will have the 9th selection.

Max Strus scored 16, Kyle Lowry added 15 and Caleb Martin scored 10 for the Heat. Miami, the No. 8 seed, leads the East semifinal series 3-1, with Game 5 — and the first potential clincher — awaiting in New York on Wednesday night. Lakers 104, Warriors 101 – Lakers rally past Warriors 104-101, take 3-1 series lead

LeBron James scored 27 points and Anthony Davis had 23 points and 15 rebounds for the seventh-seeded Lakers, who moved to the brink of an improbable trip to the Western Conference finals with their eighth consecutive home victory since March. Los Angeles overcame Stephen Curry’s third career postseason triple-double down the stretch largely because of Walker.

NCAA – Iowa, Iowa St announce investigations into athlete gambling

Iowa State acknowledged about 15 of its athletes across three sports also are suspected of violating gambling rules. Golf – Tiger Woods’ lawyers try to stop ex-girlfriend’s lawsuit
Attorneys for golf superstar Tiger Woods will soon be in court in an attempt to halt a lawsuit his ex-girlfriend filed against him. The attorneys are expected to argue in a Florida court Tuesday that Erica Herman signed a nondisclosure agreement with the golfer requiring that any disagreement between the two must be decided by an arbitrator in private. Herman is arguing that the contract should be thrown out. She was working as the manager of his Florida restaurant when their romantic relationship began. She says she signed the agreement under duress because he threatened to fire her if she didn’t, His lawyers deny that.

NFL – Bills’ Hamlin will put the millions raised into his charity
Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin will use the $10 million given to online fundraising campaigns by well-wishers after his on-field collapse to fund his own nonprofit, the Chasing M’s Foundation. The decision begins the 25-year-old’s plan for the unprecedented outpouring of support that he received after his heart stopped following a tackle during a Monday night football game in January. Hamlin first started Chasing M’s Foundation in May 2020 when he was still a student playing with the University of Pittsburgh. His spokesperson said they applied last month for retroactive tax-exempt status for the nonprofit.
