Jasson Domínguez broke a third-inning tie with his first Yankee Stadium home run, and New York got back over .500 for the first time in three weeks with a 4-3 win over the Detroit Tigers. Domínguez homered for the third time in five games since his big league debut on Friday, a 110.2 mph line drive off Beau Brieske. The 20-year-old switch-hitter in batting .333 average, five RBIs and a 1.1143 OPS. New York matched its longest winning streak this year at five and has won eight of nine since falling to 62-68.

MLB – Tigers pitcher Matt Manning’s right foot broken on 119.5 mph comebacker
Detroit pitcher Matt Manning’s right foot was broken when he was hit by a 119.5 mph comebacker off the bat of Giancarlo Stanton in the Tigers’ 4-3 loss to the New York Yankees. The 25-year-old right-hander will miss the rest of the season. He missed 2 1/2 months this year after being hit on the foot by a comebacker off the bat of Toronto’s Alejandro Kirk. Stanton’s hardest-hit ball this season rebounded off Manning’s foot, struck the pitcher on the backside and was gloved by Manning, who threw to first for the final out of the first inning.

NFL – Chiefs begin NFL title defense against Lions on Thursday night at Arrowhead
The Chiefs will try to become the first back-to-back Super Bowl champions for the first time since the Patriots pulled off the feat nearly two decades ago when they open the NFL season against Detroit on Thursday night at Arrowhead Stadium. But it won’t be easy given that All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones is in the midst of a holdout and All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce is dealing with a hyperextended knee that he sustained in practice on Tuesday. The Lions are hardly a pushover, either. They won eight of their last 10 games last season and added plenty of playmakers on both sides of the ball, including David Montgomery from the Bears and fellow running back Jahmyr Gibbs with a first-round draft pick.
NFL – Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce questionable for opener vs Lions with knee injury
The Chiefs’ Travis Kelce was held out of Wednesday’s final workout and listed as questionable for Thursday night’s season opener against Detroit because of a knee injury. The All-Pro tight end hyperextended his knee during Tuesday’s practice. Kelce was the only player to carry an injury designation for the Super Bowl champions, who will be raising their latest banner before the first game of the NFL season. That means that wide receiver Kadarius Toney and cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, both of whom have dealt with knee injuries throughout training camp, are expected to be in the lineup.
NFL – Chiefs All-Pro Chris Jones amid holdout as season approaches: ‘I just want a raise’
Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones says he “just wants a raise” as he threatens to take his holdout into the regular season with Kansas City scheduled to face the Detroit Lions in the NFL’s opener Thursday night. Jones was back in Kansas City on Wednesday to visit with children and their families at Ronald McDonald House Charities. The All-Pro pass rusher left open the possibility he could be on the field against the Lions, and reaffirmed his hope that he can sign a long-term deal with the Chiefs. The 29-year-old Jones is entering the final year of a four-year, $80 million contract.
NFL – Justin Fields gets chance to show he can be the passer the Bears need
The Chicago Bears talked throughout the offseason about Justin Fields’ improvement throwing the ball. It’s time to see if he really is ready to take a step forward as a passer. The Green Bay Packers figure to test Fields’ passing when they visit Chicago for the season opener on Sunday. And if they dare him to stay in the pocket rather than run, Fields says “that’s fine.” Fields emerged as one of the NFL’s most electrifying players because of his ability to break off huge runs. But he ranked near the bottom of the league as a passer.
NCAAFB – Notre Dame hoping to show defensive success is no fluke against Wolfpack
No. 10 Notre Dame’s defense is off to a promising start. Now the Fighting Irish must prove they can be just as suffocating against a Power Five foe, North Carolina State. Notre Dame has allowed just one field goal each to Navy and Tennessee State, marking the first time since 1975 the defense held its first two opponents without a touchdown. The Irish head into Saturday’s game ranked in the FBS’ top six in scoring defense and total defense, limiting opponents to 162.5 yards per game. Simply put, this year’s unit looks better in coordinator Al Golden’s second season.
Tennis – In ‘brutal’ US Open heat, Medvedev warns that a player is ‘gonna die’
Daniil Medvedev has reached his fourth U.S. Open semifinal as the heat and humidity continue to rise at the Grand Slam tennis tournament. He looked into a courtside TV camera in the final set of a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Andrey Rublev on Wednesday and warned that a player is ‘gonna die’ in the nearly 95-degree Fahrenheit (35-Celsius) conditions. Medvedev, the 2021 U.S. Open champion, will face defending men’s champion Carlos Alcaraz next. Alcaraz beat Alexander Zverev 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. Aryna Sabalenka and Madison Keys will meet in the women’s semifinals on Thursday. Both won in straight sets Wednesday.
Tennis – Alcaraz averts an early challenge from Zverev to return to the semifinals
Carlos Alcaraz has defeated Alexander Zverev in straight sets to reach the U.S. Open semifinals. Alcaraz is trying to become the first man to win consecutive titles at Flushing Meadows since Roger Federer claimed five in a row from 2004 to 2008. Alcaraz is a 20-year-old from Spain who has won 24 of his past 25 Grand Slam matches. That includes a trophy at Wimbledon in July. He will try to get back to the final in New York by beating 2021 U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev in Friday’s semifinals. The other matchup in the men’s final four is Novak Djokovic against unseeded American Ben Shelton.
