NCAAFB – 1st lawsuit filed against Fitzgerald and Northwestern from  hazing scandal
A former Northwestern football player filed the first lawsuit against Pat Fitzgerald and members of the school’s leadership, seeking damages stemming from a hazing scandal that cost the former football coach his job. The former player is identified in the lawsuit as John Doe. He alleged Tuesday in Cook County Court in Chicago that Fitzgerald along with Northwestern University President Michael Schill and other leaders at the school enabled sexual misconduct and racial discrimination. The player was on the football team from 2018 to 2022. Fitzgerald was fired last week after a university investigation found allegations of hazing by 11 current or former players.

NCAAFB – Northwestern hazing scandal in company with schools like Penn State
Northwestern has been added to a long list of American universities to face a scandal in athletics and may eventually join the trend of making large payouts following allegations of sexual abuse. A former Wildcats football player filed the first lawsuit against Pat Fitzgerald and members of the school’s leadership on Tuesday, seeking damages stemming from a hazing scandal that cost the former football coach his job. More lawsuits are expected to follow from former football and baseball players as well as from student-athletes who played other sports for the private school.

WNBA – WNBA expansion a topic of discussion for league, as 2nd half of season tips off
As the WNBA tips off the second half of its season, add expansion to the list of topics on the minds of players and the league. During All-Star Game weekend, Commissioner Cathy Engelbert once again said that there are cities interested in joining the WNBA in the near future and that the league would have more expansion news to announce later this year. There hasn’t been an expansion franchise since Atlanta in 2008. The Las Vegas Aces moved from San Antonio before the 2018 season. The Aces remained atop the power poll led by AP player of the week A’ja Wilson. New York and Connecticut followed Las Vegas.

WNBA – Indiana’s Aliyah Boston front-runner for rookie of the year honors
Aliyah Boston just wanted to fit in as a WNBA rookie. Instead, her historic season has brought renewed hope and some desperately needed change to the Indiana Fever. The top overall draft pick in April’s draft went into the All-Star as the top rookie in scoring, rebounding and blocks and as the obvious favorite in the rookie of the year chase. But Boston expects more than just ending losing streaks, surpassing recent single-season victory titles or collecting another trophy. She wants to help the Fever make their first playoff appearance since 2016, too.

NFL – Detroit Lions enter training camp with highest expectations in many years
The Detroit Lions are entering the season with the highest expectations they’ve had in years. Detroit won eight of its last 10 games last season and finished with a winning record for the first time since 2017. Detroit bolstered its shaky defense in free agency and the draft. Keeping veteran quarterback Jared Goff healthy will be important because Nate Sudfeld serves as his backup with just six games of experience since being drafted in 2016. The Lions will have a kicking competition in the preseason with Michael Badgley trying to keep his job, holding off Riley Patterson.

NFL – Bears counting on Fields to take another step after adding DJ Moore and to O-Line
The Chicago Bears are counting on Justin Fields to take another step as a passer in this third season after he dazzled last season running the ball. The Bears went all-in on the former Ohio State star by trading for play-making receiver DJ Moore and beefing up the protection. The Bears also made a big change in the front office by hiring former Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren to replace the retired Ted Phillips and moved closer to leaving Soldier Field.

NFL – Indianapolis Colts begin training camp with another new quarterback in mix
The Indianapolis Colts will start this season with another new quarterback behind center. The big question is who will it be? After parting ways with veterans Matt Ryan and Nick Foles after one season, the Colts signed former NFL starter Gardner Minshew and drafted Anthony Richardson with the fourth overall pick. How soon Richardson starts will depend on how quickly he picks up new coach Shane Steichen’s offense. But there are plenty of other questions, too. Will Indy’s offensive line rebound from an abysmal season? Can Jonathan Taylor stay healthy and return to form? And can the Colts generate a stronger pass rush in 2023?

Golf – British Open returns to Hoylake, PGA Tour and European tour are in Tahoe area
The 151st staging of the British Open is at Royal Liverpool. Cameron Smith will try to become the first repeat winner of the claret jug since Padraig Harrington in 2008. Rory McIlroy tries to end his nine-year drought in the majors. This is the 13th time for the Hoylake links to host golf’s oldest championship. The PGA Tour and European tour have a co-sanctioned tournament near Lake Tahoe, while the LPGA Tour has its only team event, the  Dow Great Lakes Invitational, which is being held in Midland Michigan. The LPGA ends on a Saturday to give players an extra day to get to France for the next major.
