The Tigers announced today that they have claimed right handed pitcher Dereck Rodríguez off of waivers and have optioned him to their alternate training site in Toledo.

The 28 year old Rodríguez is the son of Hall of Famer and former Tiger Iván Rodríguez. He comes to Detroit from the San Francisco Giants in a move the Tigers hope will eventually add depth to their pitching staff at the big league level.

Rodríguez took the mound just twice so far this season for the Giants, both times in relief. He allowed six runs on 10 hits in four innings or work. Two years ago, he went 6-4 with a 2.81 ERA in 19 starts and two relief appearances.
