NHL – Hall of Fame covers Brad Aldrich’s name on Stanley Cup
The Hockey Hall of Fame has covered the name of an assistant coach engraved on the Stanley Cup after the assistant was accused of sexually assaulting a player during the Chicago Blackhawks’ run to the 2010 championship. The Hall says Brad Aldrich’s name was covered with X’s on Sunday, the same day that the names of the 2020-21 champion Tampa Bay Lightning were added to the Cup. Blackhawks owner Rocky Wirtz wrote Hall of Fame chairman Lanny McDonald last week to ask for the removal of Aldrich’s name.

Georges Niang added 18 points for the short-handed 76ers, who have won four in a row. In addition to Ben Simmons, who has missed all eight games, Philadelphia was without starters Tobias Harris and Danny Green. NCAAFB – Big Ten – 1st-place Minnesota gives coach PJ Fleck new 7-year contract
Minnesota and coach P.J. Fleck have agreed to a new seven-year contract that lasts through the 2028 season. The Gophers are currently in first place in the Big Ten West Division. The deal is pending approval by the university’s board of regents. Fleck’s base salary this year is $4.65 million. That’s in the middle of the pack for head coaches in the 14-team conference. Minnesota is 6-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play and 20th in the current College Football Playoff rankings. The Gophers host Illinois on Saturday.

NFL – Prosecutor: Ruggs drove 156 mph before fatal crash in Vegas
Prosecutors in Las Vegas say former Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III was speeding at 156 mph with a blood-alcohol content twice Nevada’s legal limit before his sports car slammed into another vehicle, killing a 23-year-old woman. Ruggs made his initial court appearance Wednesday and posted $150,000 bond on felony driving under the influence resulting in death and reckless driving charges. The team released Ruggs just hours after the fiery crash. Police said a loaded gun also was found in Ruggs’ wrecked Corvette. A judge set strict conditions for his release, including home confinement, pending another court appearance next week. Ruggs’ attorney says Ruggs was released from jail Wednesday evening.

NFL – Packers QB Aaron Rodgers in COVID-19 protocol, out Sunday
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is in the NFL’s COVID-19 protocol and will miss Sunday’s game at Kansas City. Coach Matt LaFleur confirmed Wednesday that Rodgers was in the protocol but would not say if Rodgers had tested positive. The reigning NFL MVP is the latest Packers player to deal with the coronavirus. Wide receivers Davante Adams, a 2020 All-Pro, and Allen Lazard missed last week’s victory at Arizona because of COVID-19 protocols. Green Bay’s backup quarterback is 2020 first-round draft pick Jordan Love, who has thrown seven passes in his short career.

MLB – Reds trade veteran C Tucker Barnhart to Tigers for prospect
The Cincinnati Reds have traded Gold Glove catcher Tucker Barnhart to the Detroit Tigers for infield prospect Nick Quintana. Barnhart is a 31-year-old left-handed hitter and reliable backstop who is leaving Cincinnati after eight years. In the last six seasons he led the Reds in catching starts and innings caught, winning Gold Gloves in 2017 and 2020. The rise of rookie Tyler Stephenson made Barnhart and his contract expendable in the eyes of the Reds. Quintana played in Low-A ball in the Tigers’ system last season.

MLB – Soler, Freeman, Correa among 160 free agents who hit market
World Series MVP Jorge Soler, Freddie Freeman and Eddie Rosario of the champion Atlanta Braves are among 160 players who became free agents as an uncertain offseason started with a lockout threat looming. Houston shortstop Carlos Correa and Astros pitcher Justin Verlander, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, also became free agents. Other stars who hit the market include Corey Seager, Trevor Story, Max Scherzer, Marcus Semien, Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Michael Conforto and Kevin Gausman. About 50 additional players are potentially eligible, pending decisions on options in their contracts for 2022. Free agents can negotiate contracts with any team starting Sunday evening.

IndyCar – Detroit Grand Prix to return downtown starting in 2023
The Detroit City Council has approved a contract to return the Detroit Grand Prix downtown from its current home on an island in the middle of the Detroit River. Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix Inc. told councilmembers in September that it wanted to hold the race from 2023 through 2025 on a 1.7-mile track along city streets instead of on Belle Isle. Next year’s race still will be held in June on the popular island park, east of downtown. Detroit Grand Prix said Wednesday in a statement that representatives spent the past five weeks in meetings and listening sessions with Detroit residents, business leaders, community groups and elected leaders on returning the race downtown.
