St. Joe Sweeps SMAC Cross Championship

The St. Joe Boys’ and Girls’ both won the Southwest Michigan Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship today at Riverview Park in St. Joe. The boys defended their conference title by edging out Portage Central 35-40.  Central’s Connor Wuori won the race with a time of 15:31.  St. Joe’s Skyler Arthur finished second with a time of 16:04, Nick Jewell was third with a time of 16:35, Erik Edwards was fourth at 16:39, and Tanner Rydleski was ninth at 16:54.

The girls’ won their first conference title in recent memory, outpacing Portage Northern 39-65.  St. Joe’s Kaitlin Newton kicked to a first place finish with a time of 19:20, one second better than Gull Lake’s Lily Fell.  Vanessa Veersma finished fifth overall for the Bears with a time of 19:40, Anna Fischer was 8th at 19:51, and Jessi Armstrong finished 11th at 20:01.
