Coleman Hawkins and Ty Rodgers also scored 15 points apiece for the Illini (12-3, 3-1 Big Ten), who bounced back after a close loss at then-No. 1 Purdue last Friday. Tyson Walker scored 17 points and A.J. Hoggard added 16 for the Spartans (9-7, 1-4), who fell into a last-place tie with Michigan in the conference standings. Walker and Hoggard each missed tying 3-pointers in the final 15 seconds.

Donta Scott scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half, Julian Reese had 14 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks, and Maryland beat short-handed Michigan 64-57. Scott made a 3-pointer from the wing with 7:56 remaining in the second half to give Maryland its first lead, 49-48, since it was 15-13. Scott added another 3-pointer on their next possession for his fourth make from distance in the second half that put the Terrapins in the lead for good 52-50. Reese came up big on defense in the final minute, blocking Nimari Burnett twice before getting fouled with 23.2 seconds left. Reese, a 58.6% free-throw shooter, sank two free throws for a 62-57 lead. Michigan was without leading scorer Dug McDaniel, who was suspended for 6 road games for Michigan.

NFL – Patriots’ ‘partnership’ with Bill Belichick ends after 24 seasons, 6 Super Bowls
Six-time NFL champion Bill Belichick has agreed to part ways as the coach of the New England Patriots, bringing an end to his 24-year tenure as the architect of the most decorated dynasty of the league’s Super Bowl era. Belichick became just the third coach in NFL history to reach 300 career regular-season wins, joining Hall of Famers Don Shula and George Halas. Belichick trails only Shula for the record for victories by a coach. But this season, finishing with a 4-13 record, was Belichick’s worst in 29 seasons as an NFL head coach.
NFL – Matthew Stafford back to Detroit with Rams to face Lions in playoffs
The Detroit Lions’ first home playoff game in three decades features the return of one of the quarterbacks who failed to lift the franchise to postseason success since it won the NFL title in 1957. Matthew Stafford was drafted by Detroit in 2009 coming off the league’s first 0-16 season. He is making his return to Ford Field with the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night, three years after asking for a trade that triggered a blockbuster deal. The Rams acquired Stafford for Jared Goff and a pair of first-round picks.
NFL – Lions rookie tight end Sam LaPorta optimistic he’ll be healthy enough to face Rams
Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta is optimistic he will be healthy enough to play against the Los Angeles Rams in an NFC wild-card game, a week after injuring his left knee. LaPorta says he got some reps at practice Thursday and is feeling better each day. The second-round pick from Iowa is one of the top players for the third-seeded Lions, who need him to help keep Matthew Stafford off the field in his return to Detroit with the sixth-seeded Rams on Sunday night at Ford Field.

Darnell Nurse scored 1:20 into overtime and the Edmonton Oilers beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 to match a franchise record with their ninth straight win. Edmonton, which also won nine in a row late last season and in 2001, can break the team mark Saturday night in Montreal. Oilers superstar Connor McDavid tied it midway through the third period and Zach Hyman scored a go-ahead goal with six minutes left in regulation, but Calvin Pickard could not stop a shot from Olli Maatta from a sharp angle a couple of minutes later.

Nikolaj Ehlers scored with 1:05 left and the NHL-leading Winnipeg Jets beat the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 on Thursday night to extend their franchise-record winning and points streaks. Gabe Vilardi tied it with 3:29 left, with Adam Lowry assisting on both goals, and Laurent Brossoit stopped 19 shots to help the Jets push their winning streak to eight and points run to 14. Connor Murphy scored early in the second period for Chicago. The Blackhawks are playing without Connor Bedard, the rookie star who had surgery on his jaw Wednesday.

NCAAFB – Appeal by fired MSU football coach Mel Tucker in sex harassment case denied
An appeal by former Michigan State head football coach Mel Tucker of the findings in a sexual harassment case which led to his firing has been denied. An attorney hired by the East Lansing school said in a decision dated Wednesday that Tucker failed to provide information that proved error or bias. Tucker told investigators that he had consensual phone sex with activist and rape survivor Brenda Tracy. Tracy is known for her work with college teams educating athletes about sexual violence. She filed a complaint with the school in 2022, saying Tucker sexually harassed her during a phone call. Tucker was suspended in September and fired later that month.
MLB – Chicago White Sox, Dylan Cease avoid arbitration with $8 million, 1-year deal
Pitcher Dylan Cease and the Chicago White Sox avoided arbitration, agreeing to an $8 million, one-year deal. Cease, who has been mentioned in trade rumors, struggled last season after finishing second in the 2022 AL Cy Young Award vote. The 28-year-old right-hander was 7-9 with a 4.58 ERA in 33 starts. The White Sox also reached agreements with slugger Andrew Vaughn ($3.25 million) and right-hander Michael Kopech ($3 million) as well as infielder Nicky Lopez ($4.3 million), and pitchers Michael Soroka ($3 million), Touki Toussaint ($1.3 million) and Garrett Crochet ($800,000). Chicago has deals with its seven arbitration-eligible players.
