Tigers 7, Athletics 3 – Skubal sharp to win fourth straight as Tigers beat last-place A’s 7-3
Tarik Skubal had a season-high 10 strikeouts in seven strong innings for his fourth consecutive win, and the Detroit Tigers handed the Athletics their eighth consecutive loss, beating Oakland 7-3. Kerry Carpenter had his ninth multi-hit game this month and the 34th of the season for Detroit. Matt Vierling added two hits, an RBI and scored twice for the Tigers, who are 6-2 on their final road trip of the season. Brent Rooker hit his 28th home run for the last-place A’s (46-107), who need to win their final nine games to avoid matching the 1979 A’s (54-108) for the most losses in Oakland history.

Pirates 8, Cubs 6 – Miguel Andujar and Joshua Palacios drive in 3 runs apiece as Pirates beat Cubs 8-6
Miguel Andújar drove in three runs and Joshua Palacios hit a pinch-hit three-run homer as the Pittsburgh Pirates held off the Chicago Cubs 8-6. Pittsburgh gave up six runs in the last three innings in handing Chicago its 10th loss in 13 games. The Cubs are now tied with Miami for the final National League wild card spot. Pittsburgh’s Johan Oviedo threw six scoreless innings, giving up four hits. The right-hander walked five batters but escaped trouble on multiple occasions and held the Cubs to 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

MLB – Tigers hire Jeff Greenberg as GM, adding former Cubs and Blackhawks executive
The Detroit Tigers hired Jeff Greenberg to be their general manager on Thursday, adding a former Chicago Cubs and Blackhawks executive to work with team president of baseball operations Scott Harris. Detroit is tied with the Los Angeles Angels for the longest active postseason drought that dates to 2014. The Tigers are headed toward their seventh straight season with a losing record. Greenberg was the Blackhawks’ associate general manager for 1 1/2 years after working in baseball for 15-plus years.

NCAAFB – Harbaugh returns to sidelines to lead No. 2 Michigan against Rutgers
Jim Harbaugh is back where he belongs — the Michigan sidelines. After missing the first three games of the season due to a school-imposed suspension, Harbaugh will be back Saturday against Rutgers coaching his 100th game at his alma mater. The No. 2 Wolverines (3-0, 0-0 Big Ten) rolled without him, outscoring East Carolina, UNLV and Bowling Green by a combined score of 96-16, but Harbaugh made sure to credit everyone who played a part in keeping things running smoothly. The Scarlet Knights are also off to a 3-0 start led by quarterback Gavin Wimsatt.

NCAAFB – Ohio State gets a chance for a big statement in showdown at Notre Dame
No. 6 Ohio State visits No. 9 Notre Dame on Saturday night in one of the biggest games so far this season. The Fighting Irish and the Buckeyes are undefeated after beating each opponent by at least 20 points. The Buckeyes rank third in total defense and Notre Dame is right behind them in fourth. With Sam Hartman at quarterback, Notre Dame is expected to loosen things up a bit a year after trying to control the clock. Both teams are eager to establish the run if they can.

49ers 30, Giants 12 – Christian McCaffrey and the 49ers win 13th straight regular season game
Christian McCaffrey scored a touchdown in his 12th straight game, Brock Purdy threw two TD passes and the San Francisco 49ers won their 13th straight regular season game, 30-12 over the New York Giants. The Niners weren’t particularly sharp on offense in their home opener but got enough from McCaffrey and on big runs after the catch by Deebo Samuel and George Kittle to earn their second 3-0 start in 25 seasons. The defense did the rest against the short-handed Giants. New York finished with 150 yards of offense while missing star running back Saquon Barkley and left tackle Andrew Thomas.

NFL – Lions host Falcons in matchup of teams with long NFL postseason droughts
The Detroit Lions will play the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday at home in a matchup of teams with long playoff droughts. Detroit hasn’t made it past the regular season since 2016 and Atlanta’s most recent postseason appearance was in 2017. The Falcons are off to a 2-0 start with wins over Green Bay and Carolina, teams with inexperienced quarterbacks. The Lions failed to follow up an impressive win at Kansas City, losing to Seattle at home in overtime last week. Both teams feature a first-round running back: Atlanta’s Bijan Robinson and Detroit’s Jahmyr Gibbs.

NFL – Struggling Bears head to KC to face the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs
The struggling Bears are headed to Arrowhead Stadium to take on the Chiefs on Sunday. The Bears will be without a defensive coordinator following Alan Williams’ surprising and abrupt resignation and their offense has been embroiled in controversy after quarterback Josh Fields blamed coaching for his “robotic” play the first two weeks. Meanwhile, the Chiefs are starting to hit their stride after their Week 2 win in Jacksonville. All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones ended his holdout and was back to his disruptive self, and tight end Travis Kelce was back on the field after missing the season opener with a knee injury.

NFL – Bears GM Ryan Poles believes the team can work its way out of its current troubles
Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles is leading a team facing real adversity. The Bears have lost 12 straight games dating to last season. Quarterback Justin Fields made inflammatory comments about how he’s being coached, and defensive coordinator Alan Williams has resigned. However, Poles expresses complete confidence in coach Matt Eberflus on Thursday. He believes he and Eberflus can guide the Bears out of difficulties as they travel to Kansas City to face the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs on Sunday.

NHL – Connor Bedard takes the ice for his first NHL training camp with Blackhawks
Connor Bedard has arrived at his first NHL training camp with the Chicago Blackhawks. Even Bedard, used to the hockey spotlight and incredibly composed at just 18 years old, knew it was a moment. Bedard says “It’s definitely a dream right now.” The Blackhawks feel the same way, after they used a surprise win in the NHL draft lottery to take the highly touted center with the No. 1 overall pick. The stands were packed for Bedard’s first practice of camp, dotted with No. 98 Bedard jerseys.
