Two Southwest Michigan High School Boys Basketball coaches announced they would not be returning to the bench next season. Longtime St. Joseph Bears Head Coach Gregg Schaffer announced his retirement as coach of the Bears. Schaffer has had two stints as the Bears head coach during his time at St. Joseph, Schaffer who played for his father the legendary Jerry Schaffer at River Valley leaves St. Joe with a record of 222-196, which makes Schaffer the winningest coach in Bears program history. St. Joe went 8-14 this season and lost in the first round of the Districts to Mattawan 66-46..
Also leaving is Edwardsburg head boys basketball coach Steve Wright. Wright announced his resignation as the Eddies head coach after 11 seasons. Wright was Edwardsburg’s JV coach under Dan Gunn until moving up to varsity before the 2013-14 season. Like Schaffer, Wright also was able to learn under his father in the area, Steve father Ken Wright was the coach at Cassopolis for two stints in the from 1988-2002. Edwardsburg lost in the first round of the districts 49-46 in overtime at home to Lakeshore, Edwardsburg finished the season at 12-9.
