Martinez Could Be Ready For Season Opener

Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez had successful surgery on his left knee earlier today and is expected to be ready for the start of the season.

The Tigers say Martinez should resume full activity in 4-6 weeks. General manager Dave Dombrowski says they are happy the surgery went well.

Detroit announced last week that Martinez tore the medial meniscus in his left knee during offseason workouts. Dr. James Andrews performed surgery in Pensacola, Florida.

Martinez is expected back by the time the Tigers start their bid for a fifth straight AL Central title, although it remains to be seen how the knee will hold up over the course of the $68 million, four-year contract he signed this offseason.
