Lions 20, Buccaneers 6 – Goff throws for 353 yards, 2 TDs to lead Lions past sputtering Buccaneers 20-6
Jared Goff threw for 353 yards and two touchdowns and the NFC North-leading Detroit Lions beat the sputtering Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20-6. The streaking Lions won their fourth straight game following an overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks and are off to a 5-1 start for the first time since 2011. Goff tossed TD passes of 27 yards to Amon-Ra St. Brown and 45 yards to Jameson Williams, converting on third-and-13 in one instance and third-and-10 on the other. Detroit won for the seventh time in eight road games dating to last season. The Bucs Baker Mayfield was 19 of 37 for 206 yards and one interception. The Lions lost starting running back David Montgomery in the 2nd quarter to a rib injury.

Vikings 19, Bears 13 – Cousins, Hicks lead way as Vikings knock out Fields, beat Bears 19-13
Kirk Cousins threw for a touchdown, Jordan Hicks returned a fumble 42 yards for a score and the Minnesota Vikings knocked Justin Fields out of the game in beating the Chicago Bears 19-13. The Vikings made enough plays without injured star receiver Justin Jefferson to shake off a loss to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs and win for the second time in three games. Fields was sacked four times and exited with a right hand injury early in the third quarter, and the Bears lost again after stopping a 14-game slide at Washington last week.
Jaguars 37, Colts 20 – Jaguars beat Minshew and the Colts 37-20 for their 9th straight home victory in the series
Trevor Lawrence threw two touchdown passes, Travis Etienne ran for a pair of scores and the Jacksonville Jaguars beat Indianapolis 37-20 for their third consecutive victory. It was the Colts’ ninth straight road loss in the series. Coming off back-to-back victories overseas, the Jaguars (4-2) spent all week hoping to avoid a “London hangover.” They responded with their most lopsided victory of the season. The Colts (3-3) had hoped to end a head-scratching road skid against Jacksonville that started in 2015. But Gardner Minshew, getting the start in place of injured rookie Anthony Richardson, turned the ball over four times in his return to Jacksonville.

NFL – Lions’ LB Anzalone shares hug with parents who returned home safely from Israel
Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone’s best moment Sunday came when he hugged his parents after Detroit’s 20-6 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His parents safely arrived home from Israel a few days earlier. They were among about 50 people affiliated with a Naples, Florida-based church who were in the country when war broke out, With his parents at the game and being able to lock in on football, Anzalone led the Lions with seven solo tackles. He also had two tackle assists, a tackle for loss and two passes defended.
NFL – Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields leaves loss to Vikings with right hand injury
Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields left their 19-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings with a right hand injury. Fields got hurt when he was sacked by Danielle Hunter with about 10 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter. Chicago punted on the next play, and Tyson Bagent was behind center when the Bears got the ball back. Coach Matt Eberflus said an X-ray on Fields’ hand was negative, and the team would know more after the QB gets an MRI on Monday.

Jordan Montgomery shut down the Houston Astros and Leody Taveras homered as the Texas Rangers did just enough against Justin Verlander to get a 2-0 win in the opener of the AL Championship Series Sunday night. Montgomery threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings and Taveras made it 2-0 with his solo homer in the fifth inning. Rookie Evan Carter helped in the win, too. The 21-year-old doubled and scored in the second and made two nifty defensive plays. The Rangers, who are in the ALCS for the first time since back-to-back appearances in 2010-11, improved to 6-0 this postseason after sweeping the Rays in the Wild Card Series and the Orioles in the ALDS.

NASCAR – Kyle Larson earns spot in NASCAR’s championship race with win at Las Vegas
Kyle Larson edged Christopher Bell at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway finish line to become the first driver locked into NASCAR’s championship race. The 2021 Cup champion earned the first of four spots in the Nov. 5 title-deciding finale with his win Sunday. A win in any of the three playoff races this round earns an automatic berth into the championship finale. The remaining slots are filled based on the points standings. Bell, Tyler Reddick, Ryan Blaney and Christopher Buescher are the four drivers below the cutline. The win capped a week for Larson in which he began his preparations for next year’s Indianapolis 500. Larson plans to run both the Indy 500 and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 next May and on Thursday completed the rookie orientation program at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Golf – PGA – Tom Kim wins in Las Vegas for the 2nd time in the same PGA Tour season
Tom Kim is a winner in Las Vegas again. It was a wild finish in the Shriners Children’s Open. At one point there was a six-way tie for the lead with 12 players separated by one shot. Kim emerged with a 66 to defeat Adam Hadwin by one shot. It’s his third PGA Tour title at age 21. He’s the youngest to do that since Tiger Woods. Kim also joins Byron Nelson in 1944 as the only players to win the same event twice in one year. That’s because the PGA Tour is going to a calendar season in 2024.
