Lions 21, Chiefs 20 – Lions spoil Chiefs’ celebration by rallying for a 21-20 win in the NFL’s opener
The Detroit Lions rallied for a 21-20 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs to ruin the Super Bowl champions’ celebration on the NFL’s opening night. Jared Goff threw for 253 yards and a touchdown to Amon-Ra St. Brown, while new Lions running back David Montgomery reached the end zone for the go-ahead score late in the game on an 8-yard touchdown run. Detroit then held the Chiefs on the next possession to put it away. Kansas City had won eight straight openers while the Lions had lost their last five. The Chiefs played without injured All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce and All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones, who is in a holdout. Detroit rookie Brian Branch intercepted Mahomes and returned it for a 50 yard touchdown to tie the game in the third quarter.

NFL – Packers’ Love, Bears’ Fields come into season with something to prove as rivals meet
Jordan Love faces the unenviable task of taking over for four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers. Justin Fields needs to show growth as a passer. And all eyes will be on the quarterbacks as the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears meet in the season opener. Love’s only previous career start was a 13-7 loss at Kansas City in 2021. The Packers owned a 25-5 edge over the Bears counting the playoffs in games started by Rodgers. Fields emerged as one of the league’s most exciting players last season by running for 1,143 yards and coming close to Lamar Jackson’s NFL record for a QB of 1,206. But he threw for just 2,242 yards and 17 touchdowns while getting sacked 55 times.

Tigers 10, Yankees 3 – Torkelson hits 2 homers as Detroit beats Yanks 10-3, ends New York’s 5-game win streak
Carlos Rodón allowed Spencer Torkelson’s first two-run homer two batters in and was tagged for seven runs in 3 2/3 innings as the New York Yankees dropped back to .500 with a 10-3 loss to the Detroit Tigers. Detroit dealt a blow to the slim playoff hopes of the Yankees (70-70) who tied a season high of five straight victories and had won eight of nine. Trying to avoid its first losing season since 1992, New York has just 22 games left and is seven games back of Toronto for the AL’s last wild card, also trailing Texas and Boston.
Diamondbacks 6, Cubs 2 – Tommy Pham homers twice, Diamondbacks beat Cubs 6-2 to move into 3rd NL wild-card
Tommy Pham hit two first-pitch home runs, Ryne Nelson was efficient on the mound in his return from the minors and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Chicago Cubs 6-2 on Thursday night. Ketel Marte added his 22nd homer to help the Diamondbacks win their second straight and move a half-game ahead of Miami for the last of the three NL wild-card spots. Chicago holds the No. 2 wild card, three games ahead of Arizona. Nelson (7-7), recalled from Triple-A Reno a night earlier, gave up two hits while striking out three and walking two in the first 5 2/3 innings. Paul Sewald, the last of five Arizona relievers, finished for his 31st save.

Detroit Tigers pitcher Matt Manning was placed on the 15-day injured list and will miss the rest of the season with a broken right foot after he was hit by a 119.5 mph comebacker off the bat off the New York Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton. The 25-year-old is 5-4 with a 3.58 ERA in 15 starts and missed 2 1/2 months after being hit on the foot by a comebacker off the bat of Toronto catcher Alejandro Kirk. Trey Wingenter, a 29-year-old right-hander, was recalled from Triple-A Toledo.

NCAAFB – MSU expands use of video in assessing player injuries, potential return to play
Michigan State athletics officials say they will expand their use of video access as a tool to aid in evaluating football injuiries and in deciding whether players can return to game action. The move follows a decision to send Alante Brown back into the season opener last week after he was carted off the field following a collision on the game-opening kickoff against Central Michigan. Brown came back into the game and the Nebraska transfer returned a kickoff 16 yards. He was on the sideline, not in uniform, in the second half. Coach Mel Tucker says the decisions were entirely up to medical staff.

Tennis – Coco Gauff tops Karolina Muchova to reach the US Open final
Coco Gauff has reached her first U.S. Open final by defeating Karolina Muchova 6-4, 7-5. Gauff is a 19-year-old from Florida who is the youngest American to make it to the title match in New York since Serena Williams in 2001. Gauff was up by a set and 1-0 in the second when three protesters disrupted play from seats in an upper level of the arena. The victory was the 11th in a row for Gauff and the 17th in her past 18 matches.
NCAAWBB – LSU, Kim Mulkey agree on 10-year, $32M contract, AP source says
A person familiar with the situation says LSU women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey has agreed to a 10-year contract worth about $32 million. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because contract details haven’t been released by LSU. The deal sets a record for the richest coaching contract in women’s college basketball and comes after Mulkey coached LSU to its first women’s basketball national title last season. Contract details were first reported by The Advocate of Baton Rouge. The contract still requires approval from the LSU Board of Supervisors. They are scheduled to vote on it Friday.
