Lions 34, Packers 20 – Montgomery runs wild as Lions beat Packers 34-20 to take early command of NFC North
David Montgomery rushed for 121 yards and three touchdowns, and the Detroit Lions asserted themselves as the team to beat in the NFC North, beating the Green Bay Packers 34-20. Montgomery carried the ball 32 times. He became the first Lion to rush for three touchdowns at Green Bay and the first Detroit player to top 100 yards rushing with three TDs since James Stewart in 2000. The Lions beat the Packers for the fourth straight time, a streak that includes the final game of last season. Detroit led 27-3 at halftime and had outgained Green Bay 284 yards to 21 as the half ended with boos from the crowd. It was the Lions’ highest-scoring first half against the Packers in the series’ 188-game history. Jared Goff was 19 of 28 for 210 yards with a touchdown pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown and an interception, which set up at Green Bay field goal for their only lead of the day.

NFL – Bears and Broncos have a chance for reprieve in matchup of reeling teams
The Chicago Bears and Denver Broncos have a chance for a reprieve when they meet in a matchup between reeling and winless teams. The question is: Who is more tired of losing? The Bears have lost 13 straight dating to last season. They’re coming off a 41-10 beating by Patrick Mahomes and the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs that capped a chaotic week. Quarterback Justin Fields turned some heads with comments about his “robotic” play. Defensive coordinator Alan Williams resigned. The Bears then fell behind 41-0 at Kansas City. Denver got crushed 70-20 at Miami.

Tigers 8, Royals 0/Tigers 7, Royals 3 – Cabrera’s 511th home run lifts Tigers, who sweep Royals 8-0 and 7-3
Miguel Cabrera hit his 511th home run as Detroit won the completion of a suspended game 8-0 and Spencer Torkelson hit a three-run homer in a seven-run seventh inning that led the Tigers over the Kansas City Royals 7-3 Thursday for a sweep both games.  Cabrera, who is retiring after the season, tied Mel Ott for 25th on the career home run list. The 40-year-old has 373 homers for Detroit, tying Norm Cash for second behind Al Kaline’s 399. Kansas City led 3-0 after 6 1/3 innings in the second game before Parker Meadows hit an RBI single and Matt Vierling tied the score with a two-run single off Carlos Hernández. Andy Ibañez singled for a 4-3 lead.

Braves 5, Cubs 3 – Braves clinch home field throughout playoffs with sweep of slumping Cubs
Max Olson hit his major league-leading 54th homer, and the Atlanta Braves clinched home-field advantage throughout the postseason with a 5-3 win over the slumping Chicago Cubs. Austin Riley had three hits and scored two runs as the Braves won for the sixth time in seven games. The NL East champions can match the franchise record for wins with a season-ending sweep of the Nationals. Chicago has dropped 13 of 19 to fall out of position for an NL wild card. With the three-game sweep by the Braves, the Cubs fell a half-game back of Miami for the third wild card.

White Sox 3, Diamondbacks 1 – Diamondbacks delay clinching playoff berth as Vaughn, Moncada homer for Sox
The Arizona Diamondbacks delayed clinching an NL wild card berth, losing to the White Sox 3-1 on as Andrew Vaughn and Yoán Moncada homered for Chicago. Arizona (84-75) is in position for the second NL wild card and its first postseason appearance since 2017. The Diamondbacks are 1 1/2 games ahead of Miami, which is a half-game ahead of the Chicago Cubs for the third and final spot. Arizona would have clinched Thursday with both a win and a Cubs loss at Atlanta. Each team had three hits, and Arizona went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position.

So was Bedard, who had two assists in Chicago’s 2-1 overtime win over the St. Louis Blues. The two lower levels of the United Center were mostly full for the exhibition matchup. The team closed off the upper deck. Blackhawks coach Luke Richardson started Bedard on a line with wingers Taylor Hall and Ryan Donato. The rookie got the loudest cheers of any player when his name was announced before the game. Chicago went 26-49-7 last season, and then used a surprise win in the NHL draft lottery to take the highly touted Bedard with the No. 1 overall pick.

An attorney for fired Michigan State football coach Mel Tucker wants university officials and representatives to preserve all documents related to the investigation, citing a potential lawsuit against the university. Attorney Jennifer Belveal sent the notification to Michigan State general counsel Brian Quinn “in anticipation of litigation” over what she called Tucker’s “iilegal termination of Mel Tucker’s contract.” The letter came a day after Michigan State fired the previously suspended Tucker over what he described as consensual phone sex with an activist and rape survivor.

NASCAR – NASCAR to return to Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval for 30th anniversary
NASCAR will return to the oval at Indianapolis Motor Speedway next season for the 30-year anniversary of stock cars racing at the historic venue. The inaugural Brickyard 400 was held on Aug. 6, 1994 and won by Indiana icon Jeff Gordon in the first of his five Indianapolis victories. That NASCAR debut was the first race beside the Indianapolis 500 to be held at the track since 1916. NASCAR raced on the oval from 1994 through 2020, but under Roger Penske ownership the race was held on the 2.439-mile road course the last three seasons as part of a shared weekend with IndyCar. The Brickyard 400 will be held on July 21, with the Xfinity Series racing on the oval one day earlier.
