Jets 22, Bills 16 – OT – Jets lose Rodgers to an Achilles tendon injury, then rally to stun Bills 22-16 in overtime
Aaron Rodgers was knocked out of the game with an Achilles tendon injury just four plays into his debut for the New York Jets, who rallied behind their defense and stunned the Buffalo Bills 22-16 in overtime on when rookie Xavier Gipson returned a punt 65 yards for the winning score. New York’s aggressive defense forced four turnovers by Buffalo’s Josh Allen, including three interceptions by Jordan Whitehead, in a wild and often ugly season opener. While the Jets concluded their night with coach Robert Saleh joining a celebratory mob in the end zone, the injury to Rodgers cast a pall over their season.

NFL – Aaron Rodgers injures his left Achilles tendon in his first series for the Jets
Aaron Rodgers injured his left Achilles tendon on his fourth snap in his debut with the New York Jets. Coach Robert Saleh confirmed the injury after the Jets’ 22-16 overtime win over the Buffalo Bills and said the 39-year-old quarterback would have an MRI. Rodgers was hurt when he was sacked by Buffalo’s Leonard Floyd. The Jets acquired the four-time MVP in a trade from Green Bay that sent fans’ expectations sky-high. Now they face an unsettled season with backup Zach Wilson taking over.

NFL – The Bears thought they had improved in the offseason, but they didn’t show it
The Chicago Bears came into the season thinking they were poised to start climbing after finishing at the bottom of the NFL. Their season-opening loss at home to Green Bay couldn’t have been more deflating. Their revamped offense, with star receiver DJ Moore now in the mix, looked just like the old one. And the same goes for a defense with some key additions. Moore was targeted only two times. That’s not what the Bears had in mind when they traded the No. 1 overall pick in the draft to Carolina for him.

Cubs 5, Rockies 4 – Yan Gomes gets key hit as Chicago Cubs top Colorado Rockies 5-4
Yan Gomes hit a two-run single in the ninth inning and Michael Fulmer stepped up at the very end, helping the Chicago Cubs top the Colorado Rockies 5-4. Gomes finished with three hits and three RBIs. Christopher Morel homered and Dansby Swanson had two hits for Chicago in the opener of a six-game trip. The Cubs stayed three games back of NL Central-leading Milwaukee and two games head of Arizona for the second NL wild card. Drew Smyly got four outs for the win, and Fulmer earned his second save of the season in his first big league appearance since Aug. 24.

MLB – Cubs place closer Alzolay on the 15-day IL: promote top prospect Crow-Armstrong
The Chicago Cubs have placed closer Adbert Alzolay on the 15-day injured list and promoted top prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong from Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs also activated reliever Michael Fulmer from the IL before the opener of a three-game series at Colorado. Outfielder Alexander Canario was optioned to Iowa, and left-hander Anthony Kay was designated for assignment. The 28-year-old Alzolay has a forearm strain. The right-hander pitched a scoreless inning on Friday and Saturday against Arizona. The 21-year-old Crow-Armstrong was selected by the Mets in the first round of the 2020 amateur draft. The speedy outfielder was acquired by Chicago in the July 2021 trade that moved Javier Báez to New York.

NCAAFB – Suspended Tucker calls allegations false and outside scope of Title IX
Suspended Michigan State football coach Mel Tucker says allegations of sexual harassment against him are completely false. He also says the intimate phone call he had with activist and rape survivor Brenda Tracy was consensual and outside the scope of Title IX and school policy. Tucker responded to Tracy’s allegations in an 885-word response a day after he was suspended by Michigan State athletic director Alan Haller. Tucker is in the third year of a $95 million, 10-year contract. If he is fired for cause, the school won’t have to pay him what’s remaining on his deal.

NCAAFB – Revenue-sharing with college football players seems ‘inevitable.’
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh created headlines when he went out of his way to encourage sharing with football players the billions of dollars conferences and schools make from selling the rights to their games to television networks. Harbaugh is far from alone in believing professional sports-style revenue-sharing, basically pay-for-play, is the next evolution of major college sports. Many college sports leader are hesitant about heading down that path, but there are those in and around the enterprise planning for it to happen.

Betting – DraftKings apologizes for sports betting offer referencing 9/11 terror attacks
Sports betting company DraftKings has apologized after using the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks to entice people to bet on baseball and football games. The Boston-based company offered users a 9/11-themed promotion titled “Never Forget.” It required the Yankees, Mets and Jets to win their games Monday. That is the 22nd anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon and the downing of a passenger jet in a field in Pennsylvania. The tragedy killed nearly 3,000 people. An outcry on social media from people offended by the promotion followed. DraftKings later took it down and apologized.

Tennis –Djokovic isn’t surprised he keeps winning Grand Slam titles. We shouldn’t either
Novak Djokovic is back at No. 1 in the ATP rankings and is the owner of 24 Grand Slam championships after winning the U.S. Open. He is still at the top of tennis at age 36. He was asked before facing Daniil Medvedev in the final whether it is surprising that he is still doing what he is doing, against the new generation. The answer, essentially, was “No.” And, frankly, no one else should be shocked by it either. If the assumption was that Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer would cede the stage in men’s tennis by now, Djokovic is still going strong.

WNBA – Connecticut’s Alyssa Thomas has crashed the MVP race
A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart head into the playoffs this week as the top contenders to win the WNBA’s most valuable player award. That’s no surprise. They are the two superstars on the league’s “super teams” — the Las Vegas Aces and the New York Liberty. But there is a third contender for MVP as well. Connecticut’s Alyssa Thomas has played her way into the conversation. She has recorded a league-record six triple-doubles in leading the Sun to the No. 3 seed. Thomas is the first player in league history to record at least 600 points, 400 rebounds and 300 assists in a single season.
