NCAAMBB – Bob Knight, Indiana’s combustible coaching giant, dies at age 83
The turbulent and brilliant basketball coach Bob Knight has died. Knight’s family made the announcement Wednesday night on social media, saying he was surrounded by family at his home in Bloomington. Knight led the Hoosiers to three NCAA championships. He was among college basketball’s winningest coaches, with 902 victories in 42 seasons at Army, Indiana and Texas Tech. He coached the U.S. to the 1984 Olympic gold medal. His temper was legendary: In 1985, he tossed a chair across the court. But he took pride in his players’ high graduation rates and never was accused of a major NCAA violation. Bob Knight was 83. “He was a guy I idolized when I got here (in 1983) because Bobby Knight was the man,” Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. “He treated me great, and he helped me. I wish people knew what a great heart that he had. He was a different dude, but if you needed some help, he would answer the bell.”

Nathan Eovaldi pitched six gutsy innings, Mitch Garver broke a scoreless tie with an RBI single in the seventh and the Texas Rangers won their first World Series championship by beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-0 in Game 5. Marcus Semien homered late and the Rangers, held hitless for six innings by Zac Gallen, finished a record 11-0 on the road this postseason after capping an all-wild card World Series with three straight wins in the desert. In his first season with Texas, manager Bruce Bochy won his fourth title 13 years to the day after his first, which came in 2010 when the Giants beat the Rangers. He also won with San Francisco in 2012 and 2014. Texas shortstop Corey Seager took home his second World Series MVP award.

Shaedon Sharpe scored 26 of his 29 points in the second half and the Portland Trail Blazers overcame an 18-point deficit to beat the Detroit Pistons 110-101 on Wednesday night. Former Piston Jeremi Grant added 24 points for the Trail Blazers, and Deandre Ayton had 16 points, 11 rebounds five steals and a block in his first game against Pistons coach Monty Williams since they both left the Phoenix Suns. Cade Cunningham had 30 points for Detroit, but missed 16 of 27 shots and turned the ball over six times. Portland trailed by 12 at halftime, but outscored the Pistons 36-25 to pull to 84-83 at the end of the third.

Jayson Tatum had 30 points and 12 rebounds in less than three quarters and the Boston Celtics used a blistering start to pull away from the Indiana Pacers, winning 155-104 on Wednesday night to remain unbeaten. The 155 points was the second-most in a regular-season game in franchise history, behind a 173-139 victory over Minneapolis in 1959. One game after blowing out the Wizards in Washington, the Celtics returned home and beat the Pacers even worse, opening a 10-point lead in the first three minutes, making it 20 in the second quarter, 30 in the third and 53 in the fourth. Mavericks 114, Bulls 105 – Williams, Hardaway lead unbeaten Mavericks to 114-105 victory over Bulls
Grant Williams tied career highs with 25 points and seven 3-pointers and the Dallas Mavericks beat the Chicago Bulls 114-105 on Wednesday night to improve to 4-0 for the first time since 2004-05. Tim Hardaway Jr. added 24 points and seven 3-pointers for Dallas, which led 99-98 with 4:08 left and put it away with 10-2 run. Luka Doncic, who went into play leading the NBA with a 39-point average, had 18 points and 10 rebounds. Doncic was 1 for 8 behind the arc. Kyrie Irving missed his second consecutive game because of a sprained left left. Zach LaVine scored 22 points for Chicago. Nikola Vucevic had 21 points and a season-high 20 rebounds.

NFL – Bears fire running backs coach David Walker, leaving Eberflus down 2 assistants
The Chicago Bears fired running backs coach David Walker, leaving coach Matt Eberflus down two assistants after defensive coordinator Alan Williams resigned in September and raising more questions about the team’s culture. Walker was in his second season with the Bears. He was hired after Eberflus replaced Matt Nagy following the 2021 season. Eberflus says the Bears “have standards to uphold” and “those standards were not met.” The Bears led the NFL in rushing last season with a franchise-record 3,014 yards. They are sixth in the league this season. Assistant quarterbacks and wide receivers coach Omar Young takes over as running backs coach.
NFL – Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson says he’s surprised he didn’t get traded
Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson was surprised he didn’t get traded after being granted permission to seek a deal with another team. Johnson says he wants to remain in Chicago for the long term even though he and general manager Ryan Poles remain in a contract standoff with his rookie deal set to expire after the season. Johnson says he’s “not asking to change the market or” break records.” He felt “for sure” he would be in a different uniform and was disappointed a deal did not get completed. Poles thought they were close to a contract extension after a meeting Sunday in Los Angeles where the Bears played the Chargers that night.
NCAAFB – CMU says Michigan suspended staffer wasn’t on pass list
Central Michigan football coach Jim McElwain says suspended Michigan football staffer Connor Stalions’ name wasn’t on his team’s pass list to have sideline access and scout Michigan State during a season-opening game in September. Photos circulating on the internet suggest Stalions was on the Chippewas’ sideline during the Sept. 1 game. The Wolverines played and beat rival Michigan State 49-0 last month. McElwain said Tuesday that Central Michigan is aware of the photo with “the sign-stealer guy” and is investigating.
NCAAFB – No. 12 Notre Dame still views Clemson as a ‘premier program’ despite 4-4 record
Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman hasn’t changed his mind about Clemson football. He sees the Tigers 4-4 record, the fact they are unranked and face the possibility of missing a bowl game for the first time since 1998 as a mirage. Freeman still believes coach Dabo Swinney still has one of the nation’s premier programs and Saturday’s matchup against the 12th-ranked Fighting Irish is still one of college football’s marquee matchups. Freeman wants his players to understand that, too.
NCAAFB – Nighttime becomes the right time for Nov. football in the Big Ten, Bundle up
Night football historically has been a rarity in the Big Ten after the first Saturday in November. The conference’s billion-dollar-a-year television package will make it a regular thing beginning next week when Michigan State visits Ohio State for a 7:30 p.m. Eastern kickoff. The rationale for the general prohibition was that the conference’s traditional footprint in the upper Midwest made November night games a hardship for teams and fans because of potentially inclement weather. Dollar signs have trumped any pushback that might have come from schools’ athletic administrations about ending the longstanding tradition.

MCCAA – LMC’s Ippel named MCCAA Runner of the Year; Freshman of the Year
The Michigan Community College Athletic Association announced their postseason cross country awards on Wednesday. Lake Michigan College Freshman Olivia Ippel took home not only the Freshman of the Year award, she also won the Conference Runner of the Year. The former St. Joseph high school runner won her last five meets. During the season Ippel won the runner of the week award numerous times, including several back to back. Kierstyn Thompson, Allison Lauri, and Morgan Pieczynski of Southwestern Michigan College were also named All Conference.
