The bullpen pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Reese Olson. Alex Lange pitched the ninth for his 19th save. Former Tiger Drew Smyly (9-9) took the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings. The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the first on a solo homer by Ibañez and an RBI single by Kerry Carpenter. Josh Rojas hit a two-run homer and six Seattle relievers combined for five effective innings, helping the Mariners beat the Chicago White Sox 6-3 for their season-high eighth straight win. After Bryan Woo tossed four innings of one-run ball in his return from the injured list, Seattle’s bullpen took over. Justin Topa got four outs for the win, and Andrés Muñoz earned his eighth save by striking out Luis Robert Jr. with a runner on first. Right before its eighth loss in 10 games, Chicago announced that executive vice president Ken Williams and general manager Rick Hahn had been fired.

MLB – White Sox fire executive VP Ken Williams and general manager Rick Hahn
The Chicago White Sox have fired executive vice president Ken Williams and general manager Rick Hahn, cutting ties with their leadership on the baseball side amid another disappointing season. Williams was in his 11th season in his position after serving as the club’s general manager for 12 seasons. He was one of baseball’s most prominent Black executives. Hahn had been the GM since October 2012. The White Sox are finishing a miserable season. They have dropped eight of 10 to fall to 49-77 on the season. Chicago made the playoffs in 2020 and 2021, and then went 81-81 last year.

NFL – Steichen’s preseason finale plan includes starting QB Anthony Richardson
Indianapolis Colts coach Shane Steichen says rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson will start Thursday night’s preseason finale at Philadelphia. The fourth overall pick in April’s draft started the preseason opener at Buffalo but did not play in Saturday’s victory over the Chicago Bears. Steichen announced previously that Richardson will be the starter Sept. 10 against Jacksonville. Steichen also says he’s aware of reports that the Colts have given running back Jonathan Taylor permission to seek out a trade but declined further comment. Taylor remains on the physically unable to perform list following offseason ankle surgery. He’s also mired in an ugly contract dispute.
NCAAFB – No. 13 Notre Dame hopes Dublin game helps expand international fan base
Notre Dame will be focused on beating Navy when the two teams travel to Dublin for Saturday’s game in Ireland’s capital. But school officials say it’s also a great opportunity to expand Notre Dame’s brand internationally. Making it easy to watch games is one way to do it, so Notre Dame is making Irish home games free to stream for international fans via Fighting Irish TV which last year cost $35 for the season. This will be the third time that Notre Dame and Navy face each other in Dublin. Notre Dame is already fielding calls about staging its next international game.
Tennis – Coco Gauff’s improved play makes her a serious contender at Flushing Meadows
There is no doubt that Coco Gauff has to be considered one of the leading title contenders at the U.S. Open. The year’s last Grand Slam tournament starts next week in New York. Gauff is a 19-year-old American who is playing as well as anyone in women’s tennis right now. She has won 11 of her past 12 matches and the two biggest titles of her career. That run follows a disappointing first-round loss at Wimbledon. After that setback, Gauff stayed in her London hotel room for two days and thought about how that defeat made her feel. And then she got back to work.
Tennis – Serena Williams gives birth to second child, a daughter
Serena Williams says she has given birth to a baby girl almost exactly a year after her last match as a tennis star. Williams posted on Instagram a picture of herself, her husband, newborn Adira River Ohanian and the family’s first child. Adira is the second child and second daughter for the 41-year-old Williams and her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. Their first, Olympia, was born in 2017. Williams won 23 Grand Slam singles titles during a career that transcended her sport. She revealed at the Met Gala in May that she was pregnant.
