Ryan Johansen, Devon Toews and Nathan MacKinnon also scored to help the Avalanche improve to 4-0. Colorado kept top pick Connor Bedard in check as the smooth-skating teenager didn’t record a shot on goal. Georgiev was sharp in posting his 14th shutout. NCAAFB – NCAA investigating allegations of sign-stealing by Michigan
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh denied having any knowledge or involvement in plotting to steal opponents’ play-calling signals by sending representatives to their games. He also said he and his staff would fully cooperate with an NCAA investigation into the allegations against his program. The Big Ten conference provided no further details, only to say that it had notified Michigan’s upcoming opponents about the investigation. The second-ranked Wolverines play at Michigan State on Saturday. The NCAA does not have rules specifically against stealing signs but does prohibit in-person advanced scouting of opponents and also has bylaws prohibiting unsportsmanlike activities.

NCAAFB – Michigan vows to keep payback vs. MSU on field a year after tunnel incident
Michigan and Michigan State insist they’ve moved on since a melee marred their last matchup on the football field. After the Wolverines won 29-7 last year, several Spartans attacked their rivals in the tunnel and were suspended for the rest of the season. The second-ranked Wolverines are favored to win at Michigan State on Saturday night by more than three touchdowns. The Spartans are 0-4 with interim coach Harlon Barnett and without fired coach Mel Tucker, who won two of three games against Michigan.

NCAA – Michigan approve applying for liquor licenses at Big House, Crisler and Yost
The University of Michigan is applying for liquor licenses to potentially sell alcohol at Michigan Stadium, Crisler Center and Yost Ice Arena. The school’s board approved the action Thursday. Michigan plans to sell alcohol at basketball and hockey games this season and to decide at a later date whether to have booze for sale at football games. Michigan State University began selling alcohol this season and will have it for sale Saturday night when it hosts the second-ranked Wolverines. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation last summer that would allow liquor licenses to be issued to sporting venues at public universities.

Jaguars 31, Saints 24 – Trevor Lawrence comes through late and the Jaguars hold off the Saints, 31-24
Travis Etienne ran for two touchdowns, Foyesade Oluokun returned an interception for a score, and Christian Kirk’s 44-yard touchdown after a short catch over the middle lifted the Jacksonville Jaguars to a 31-24 victory over the New Orleans Saints. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence returned from a sprained knee that forced him out of the final minutes of a victory over Indianapolis on Sunday. He led Jacksonville with 59 yards rushing and completed 20 of 29 passes for 204 yards and one TD to help the Jags win their fourth straight. The Saints were in position for a tying TD when they drove inside the Jacksonville 10 in the final minute only to stall out on four straight incomplete passes.

NFL – The Lions face Baltimore, having come a long way since Justin Tucker’s 66-yard kick
The Detroit Lions play at Baltimore this weekend. It’s the first meeting between the teams since Justin Tucker’s 66-yard field goal won the game for the Ravens at Detroit in 2021. That was the third game of coach Dan Campbell’s tenure with the Lions. It took him until December to win one. But Detroit is in a much different spot entering this matchup of division leaders. The Lions are one of five teams in a tie for the NFL’s best record at 5-1. The Ravens are 4-2 and lead the AFC North.

NFL – Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo won’t play at Chicago, AP source says
Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will not play Sunday because of a back injury when Las Vegas visits the Chicago Bears, a person with knowledge of the situation said. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Raiders have not announced Garoppolo’ playing status. Either 15-year veteran Brian Hoyer or rookie Aidan O’Connell will start for Las Vegas. Hoyer played the second half of Sunday’s 21-17 victory over the New England Patriots when Garoppolo was injured. O’Connell started and played the entire game when the Raiders lost at the Los Angeles Chargers 24-17 on Oct. 1.

On the verge of falling behind 3-0 in the best-of-seven series, Arizona tied the score on Lourdes Gurriel Jr.’s RBI double. The Astros led 3-0 only four batters into the game. They responded immediately after Texas got even on Corey Seager’s opposite-field homer in the third inning. Adolis García also homered for the wild-card Rangers, who have dropped two games in a row at home after starting this postseason with seven consecutive wins — six on the road. Game 5 is Friday afternoon at Texas before the best-of-seven series shifts back to Houston for Game 6 on Sunday.

MLB – Cubs expect right-hander Fulmer to miss 2024 season following elbow surgery
The Chicago Cubs expect right-hander Michael Fulmer to miss the 2024 season after the reliever had surgery on his pitching elbow. The Cubs say Fulmer underwent UCL revision surgery, a procedure that has a recovery projection similar to that of Tommy John surgery. He missed the 2019 season with Detroit because of Tommy John surgery. The Cubs also say reliever Codi Heuer has completed the initial healing and range of motion phase and plans to start throwing in mid-November. Heuer had surgery in June to repair a fractured elbow. The injury occurred as he was nearing a return from Tommy John surgery.

MLB – Leyland, Piniella, Gaston and Davey Johnson on Hall of Fame ballot in December
Jim Leyland, Lou Piniella, Cito Gaston and Davey Johnson are among eight men on the ballot for the Hall of Fame’s contemporary era committee for managers, executives and umpires that meets on Dec. 3 at the winter meetings in Nashville, Tennessee. The ballot also includes umpires Joe West and Ed Montague, former National League President Bill White and former general manager Hank Peters, the Hall said Thursday. The identities of the 16 voters will be announced closer to the meeting, and 75% of the vote is needed for election.

Olympics – Olympic Lacrosse gives Indigenous communities chance to see their sport shine
Nearly 1,000 years after lacrosse was first played on fields that could sometimes stretch for miles across the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the sport will be on the Olympic schedule in Los Angeles in 2028. Whether members of the Haudenosaunee, a collection of six Indigenous nations whose territory covers upstate New York and adjacent sections of Canada, will play in that tournament is a question that will keep the lacrosse world on edge between now and then. For now, the International Olympic Committee has ruled out having the Haudenosaunee play as their own team, the way they have at past world championships and last year’s World Games. Players could still earn spots on teams representing the United States and Canada.

TV equipment stolen from Pan Am Games’ opening ceremony, boosting security concerns
Television crews at the Pan American Games had equipment stolen this week from the compound of the National Stadium, the site of Friday’s opening ceremony, heightening concerns about crime at the tournament hosting over 6,800 athletes. Harold Mayne-Nicholls, the executive-director of the games, said Thursday that police had retrieved stolen cameras but did not offer more details. He had reported the incident in a video the day before. Chilean police said Wednesday evening they had found some of the stolen items and arrested one of the alleged robbers. A contractor, and not local police, was in charge of security at the National Stadium compound when the incident took place.
