Lions 42, Panthers 24 – Jared Goff throws 3 TD passes, runs for score, Lions beat winless Panthers 42-24
Jared Goff threw three touchdown passes in the first half and ran for a score in the fourth quarter, lifting the Detroit Lions to a 42-24 victory over the winless Carolina Panthers. The NFC North-leading Lions are 4-1 and alone atop the division in October or later for the first time since 2016. The Panthers turned the ball over three times in the first half to set up Detroit up for three touchdowns and a 28-10 halftime lead. Rookie Bryce Young threw three touchdown passes and two interceptions for Carolina. Goff was 20 of 28 for 236 yards, and his 1-yard sneak put Detroit ahead 35-10. David Montgomery, with 109 yards rushing, became the first Lion to run for 100-plus yards and score in two straight games since Kevin Jones in 2004. Rookie tight end Sam LaPorta caught two TDs in the first half. Detroit’s Aidan Hutchinson used his right hand to snag Young’s short pass in the first quarter and became the first NFL defensive lineman to have four interceptions in his first two seasons.
Colts 23, Titans 16 – Moss upstages Taylor’s return in Colts’ 23-16 victory over Titans. Richardson injured
Zack Moss upstaged the return of Jonathan Taylor by running for a career-high 165 yards and two scores and Gardner Minshew was sharp in relief of the injured Anthony Richardson to lead the Indianapolis Colts past the Tennessee Titans 23-16. The Colts snapped a seven-game losing streak at home by beating the Titans for the first time in six tries. Richardson left with a right shoulder injury late in the first half. Richardson was ruled out early in the third quarter after going 9 of 12 for 98 yards. Ryan Tannehill was 23 of 34 with 264 yards but had a game-sealing interception in the waning seconds. Derrick Henry was held to 43 yards on 13 carries.

Mitch Garver hit a third-inning grand slam and the Texas Rangers won their fourth consecutive game to start this postseason, pushing the Baltimore Orioles to the brink of elimination with an 11-8 victory in Game 2 of the AL Division Series. The wild-card Rangers have outscored the Orioles and Tampa Bay — the top two teams in the American League in the regular season — by 25-11. Bruce Bochy moved within one win of his first AL Championship Series as a manager. He reached that round four times in the National League, winning three World Series titles with San Francisco.
Twins 6, Astros 2 – Carlos Correa stars against former team as Twins beat Astros 6-2 in Game 2 to tie ALDS
Carlos Correa had three hits and three RBIs and Pablo López pitched seven shutout innings, helping the Minnesota Twins beat the Houston Astros 6-2 in Game 2 of their AL Division Series. Kyle Farmer hit a two-run homer for the Twins, who bounced back nicely after losing 6-4 in the series opener on Saturday night. Game 3 of the best-of-five series is at Minnesota on Tuesday. Correa, an October star for so many years in Houston, has returned to the postseason with a vengeance. He hit an RBI double in the first inning in Game 2. He batted with the bases loaded in the fifth and singled to center, driving in two more runs and lifting the Twins to a 5-0 lead.

Marjon Beauchamp finished with 18 points and eight rebounds to lead host Milwaukee in the teams’ preseason opener. Giannis Antetokounmpo sat out for the Bucks, but his older brother Thanasis Antetokounmpo totaled 14 points, five rebounds and two blocks in 21 minutes. Malik Beasley scored 13 points and Brook Lopez scored 11 points in 12 minutes for the Bucks. Coby White had 14 points, six rebounds and six assists to pace the Bulls, playing a team-high 23 minutes. Patrick Williams scored 13 points for the Bulls, who used all 20 of their available players. Only guard Lonzo Ball, who will miss the season with knee issues, didn’t play.
Suns 130, Pistons 126 – OT
Detroit coach Monty Williams’ new team fell to his old team, after Phoenix wasted a 20-point lead entering the fourth quarter but won in overtime. Ausar Thompson, the fifth overall pick in this year’s draft, hit a 3-pointer with 7.1 seconds left in regulation as the Pistons outscored the Suns 38-18 in the final quarter to force OT tied at 122. Kevin Durant scored 10 of his 12 points in the first quarter as Phoenix jumped out to a 46-29 lead. Grayson Allen made three 3-pointers and scored 18 points to lead the Suns. Chimezie Metu had 14 points, while Devin Booker scored 12 in 15 minutes. Bradley Beal and Saben Lee added 11 points apiece, while Yuta Watanabe scored 10. Marvin Bagley III led Detroit with 25 points. Thompson had 12 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Jaden Ivey scored 15 and Cade Cunningham added 12 points and six assists. Williams was fired by the Suns after last season. He accepted a six-year contract from the Pistons.
Grizzlies 127, Pacers 122 – OT
Jake LaRavia scored the final five points of overtime to rally Memphis over visiting Indiana. aRavia, who scored 15 points, hit a jumper with 1:13 left to play in the extra period to give the Grizzlies a 124-122 lead. He added a three-point play with 5.1 seconds left to wrap up the win. Jaren Jackson Jr. led the way with 18 points and five blocked shots. Desmond Bane scored 17 with four assists. Derrick Rose scored 13 on 6-for-8 shooting in 14 minutes. Jarace Walker, the eighth overall pick in this year’s draft and acquired in a trade with the Wizards, led Indiana with 19 points. He opened the extra period with a four-point play. Bennedict Mathurin had 14 points of his 18 points in the first half as the Pacers took a 59-56 lead into halftime. T.J. McConnell scored all 11 of his points before intermission. First-rounder Ben Sheppard scored 15.

Oklahoma moved up to No. 5 in The Associated Press college football poll and Miami’s late-game gaffe nearly cost the 25th-ranked Hurricanes a spot in the rankings. No. 1 Georgia got 50 first-place votes after 35 last week. No. 2 Michigan had 11 first-place votes. No. 3 Ohio State and No. 4 Florida State each moved up a spot and received a first-place vote. Oklahoma jumped seven places after beating Texas. The Longhorns slipped to No. 9. For the first time ever, basketball blue bloods Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, UCLA, Kansas and Louisville are ranked in football at the same time. Notre Dame dropped 11 spots to number 21 after falling to Louisville. Six of the Top 10 teams will be in the Big Ten next season.

Jackie Young and Kelsey Plum each scored 26 points and the defending champion Las Vegas Aces pulled away from the New York Liberty in the second half to win 99-82 in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals. Las Vegas point guard Chelsea Gray finished with 20 points and nine assists on her 31st birthday, A’ja Wilson had 19 points and eight rebounds. Young made 5 of 8 3-pointers. Five New York players scored in double figures. Breanna Stewart led the Liberty with 21 points, Jonquel Jones totaled 16 points and 10 rebounds. Game 2 of the best-of-five series is Wednesday in Las Vegas.
MCCAA – LMC Volleyball players earn league honors
The Michigan Community College Athletic Association has honored two Lake Michigan College volleyball players with their weekly awards. The Red Hawks Jillian Bruckner has won the MCCAA Western Conference offensive player of the week. This is the third time she has won the award this season and twice in the last three weeks. Her teammate Kaylee McDaniel won the defensive player of the week award. This is the second straight week McDaniel has won that award.

St. Joe won their third straight battle with Lakeshore with a 35-0 shutout victory at Dickinson Stadium on Friday Night. St. Joe grabbed the lead on the first drive as the Bears used a 20-play, 75-yard drive that used 8:27 to grab the lead they would not relinquish. Andrew Barlow, had two rushing touchdowns for St. Joe and added a two-point conversion. Rusty Klaer kicked a pair of field goals. Lakeshore couldn’t overcome three lost fumbles and three interceptions. St. Joe heads on the road on Friday to face 3-4 Mattawan, which will be live on News/Talk/Sports 94.9 WSJM. Lakeshore returns home to face Portage Northern (6-1), the game will air on 97.5 Y-Country.
