Girls’ H.S. Basketball Div. 3 All-State Teams

The Associated Press has released its 2019-20 all-state girls basketball team for Division 3 in Michigan.  Congratulations to our area players who earned 2nd team and honorable mention honors…

 

1st Team All-State
Hannah Spitzley, Pewamo-Westphalia, Sr.
The future Western Michigan Bronco averaged 14.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.3 steals, 2.2 assists for the Pirates this winter. She shot 58 percent from the field, 77 percent from the free-throw line and knocked down 28 three-pointers to help Pewamo-Westphalia to a 22-2 record and the top spot in the Division 3 rankings.

Kenzie Bowers, Kent City, Jr.
The 5-foot-10 point guard averaged 20.1 points, 9 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game for the Eagles. The Illinois State commit held a 3.5 assist-to-turnover ratio, knocked down 64 three-pointers and became the school’s all-time leading scorer this winter.

Lauren Langley, Oscoda, Sr.
The senior forward averaged 20.9 points and 10.3 rebounds per game for the Owls this winter, while shooting 59 percent from the floor and 75 percent from the free-throw line. She holds program records for points (1,365) and rebounds (878) in a career and will join the University of Michigan rowing team next year.

Gabi Saxman, Schoolcraft, Sr.
The 5-foot-6 guard averaged 12.3 points, 6.1 assists, 4.8 steals and 4.6 rebounds per game for the Eagles. The future Western Michigan Bronco scored 1,173 points in her four-year varsity career along with 477 assists (21st in MHSAA history) and 436 steals (19th in MHSAA history).

Ellie Droste, Pewamo-Westphalia, Sr.
The senior guard averaged 13.4 points, 3 assists and 2.3 steals per game for the Pirates, while shooting 52 percent from the field and 42 percent on 3-pointers. The future Grand Valley State Laker knocked 52 three-pointers this winter and helped Pewamo-Westphalia to a 22-2 record after winning the state championship last season.

Grace Bradford, Maple City Glen Lake, So.
The sophomore forward averaged 16.4 points, 9.3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3.2 steals per game for the Lakers, while shooting 47 percent from the field, 41 percent on 3-pointers and 81 percent from the free-throw line.

Alana Nelson, Springport, Sr.
The senior forward averaged 22 points and 11.5 rebounds per game for the Spartans. She ended her career with school records for points in a career (1,454), most points in a season (462), most rebounds in a season (242), most rebounds in a career (900), highest 2-point field goal percentage (50 percentage). She won the Big 8 Conference Player of the Year award three seasons in a row and will be playing at Northwood University next season.

Sarah Marvin, Byron, Jr.
The junior wing averaged 18.3 points, 13.1 rebounds, 5.8 assists, 3.2 steals and 1 block per game for the Eagles, while shooting 46.9 percent from the field, 40.4 percent on 3-pointers and 87.6 percent from the free-throw line. She recorded 17 double-doubles and two triple-doubles this season to help lead Byron to a school-record 23 wins and a first-ever district championship.

Xeryia Tartt, Flint Hamady, Sr.
The senior forward averaged 18.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 5.6 steals per game to help the Hawks to a 21-2 record, the Genesee Area Conference championship and a berth into the regional finals. She recorded three triple-doubles, one quadruple-double and scored a career-high 42 points against Morrice and is signed to play at Stetson University next year.

Aryana Naylor, Flint Hamady, Sr.
The senior forward averaged 18 points, 13 rebounds, 3.1 steals and 1.8 blocks per game for the Hawks. She recorded several 20-point and 20-rebound performances, including a 31-point and 20-rebound game.

Mya Petticord, Ypsilanti Arbor Prep, So.
The sophomore standout averaged 20 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 3.2 steals per game for the Gators, while shooting 56 percent from the field, 37 percent on 3-pointers and 81 percent from the free-throw line. She currently holds scholarship offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Xavier, Vanderbilt, Wichita State.

Rylie Bisballe, Lake City, Sr.
The senior forward averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds per game to lead the Trojans to a 19-1 record in the regular season. The Grand Valley State commit had 18 points, 16 rebounds, four steals, four blocks and four assists in a 48-37 win over Manton on Jan. 17.

 

Coach of the Year
Theresa Marvin, Byron
Marvin led Byron to its first outright Genesee Area Conference championship in 30 years and set a school record for wins in a season with 23 wins and only one loss. The Eagles also won their first district title in program history and made their first regional finals appearance prior to the season being suspended. In her six years as a head coach, Marvin has compiled a 94-35 record, including a 72-15 mark over the past four seasons with at least a share of the league title in each season at Bryon.
