Friday’s High School Sports Wrap-Up

BOYS BASKETBALL
Benton Harbor 82,  Niles 38
Benton Harbor used a strong second quarter to start pulling away for an 82-38 win over Niles.
Carlos Johnson led Benton Harbor with a game high 19 points. 15 of those 19 came in the first quarter. Dennie Brown added 15 points for the Tigers. Niles got ten points from Austin Brookins.
The win keeps Benton Harbor undefeated at 12-0. Niles falls to 3-7.

St. Joe 60,  Portage Northern 41
St. Joe came away with a 60-41 win over Portage Northern. With the game tied at 27 at the half, the Bears pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Huskies 16-2. Mason Scramlin led St. Joe offensively with 16 points, Cade Shimulunas added ten. Northern got a game high 23 points from Devin Marshall.

Coloma 68,  Fennville 36
Coloma remained unbeaten with a convincing 68-36 win over Fennville. The Comets jumped out to a 13-7 lead after the first quarter and steadily pulled away from there. Zach Goodline led a balanced Coloma attack with a game high 19 points. The Comets also got 15 points from Robbie Schroder and ten from Chris Brown. With the Win, Coloma improves to 11-0 on the season.

New Buffalo 51,  Lake Michigan Catholic 49    OT
New Buffalo pulled into a first place tie with Lake Michigan Catholic in the BCS White Division standings with a 51-49 win over the Lakers. The game was close throughout with Catholic leading by three after the first quarter and by four at the half. The Bison tied the game after the third quarter with both teams playing even in the fourth. Julian Hymes led New Buffalo with a game high 23 points, Seth Margaritis added 16. Zach Rogers led Catholic with 12 points, Corey Seger added 10.

Howardsville Christian 50,  Michigan Lutheran 37
Dylan Jergens scored 16 points to help lift Howardsville Christian to a 50-37 win over Michigan Lutheran. The Eagles benefitted from a strong second quarter where they outscored the Titans 19-6. Reece Herschbach added 14 points for Christian. Zeb Pappenfuss led the Lutheran attack with 14.

Hartford 69,  Bangor 38
Hartford scored 42 second half points on its way to a 69-38 win over Bangor. Buddy Rarls led the charge with 15 points. The Indians also got 12 points from William Martinez and 11 from Brandon Galvan.

GIRLS
Niles 47,  Benton Harbor 35
Niles held on for a 47-35 win at Benton Harbor. The Vikings led by as many as 23, and survived two Tiger runs in the second half.
With the game tied at ten after the first quarter, Niles outscored Benton Harbor 23-4 in the second and it proved to be too much for the Tigers to overcome. Alycia Patterson led Niles with a game high 22 points. Benton Harbor got 12 points from Joh’nae Poindexter.

St. Joe 51, Portage Northern 18
St. Joe won its sixth straight as they beat Portage Northern 51-18. The Bears’ defense set the tone early, allowing the Huskies just two points in the first quarter and ten points in the entire half. Offensively, Anna Fischer led St. Joe with a game high 19 points. Northern got eight points from Lexie Coon.

Coloma 50,  Fennville 27
Strong first and fourth quarters helped lead Coloma to a 50-27 win over Fennville. The Comets opened the game outscoring the Blackhawks 18-10. The game was fairly even over the next two quarters before Coloma closed by outscoring Fennville 15-2 in the fourth. Hannah Mathis led Coloma with a game high 16 points. Kayla Yore added ten for the Comets

Comstock 52,  Berrien Springs 39
A strong second quarter performance led Comstock to a 52-39 win over Berrien Springs. The Colts led by two after the first quarter but then outscored the Shamrocks by 13 in the second. Kyrah Sanders scored 13 points in the loss for Berrien Springs.

Hartford 46,  Bangor 24
AJ Jackson turned in 22 points and 12 rebounds to help lead Hartford to a 46-24 win over Bangor. Jessica Cortes added eight points and five assists for the Lady Indians. With the win, Hartford improves to 10-2 on the season.

Gobles 47,  Lawrence 46
A fourth quarter rally fell just short for Lawrence as they fell to Gobles 47-46. Gobles took a nine point lead into the fourth and was able to survive the Lawrence comeback bid. Dalia Lopez finished with 17 points in the loss for Lawrence.
