NFL – National Football League – Week 3
Last Night
Philadelphia Eagles 25, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 11
Cincinnati Bengals 19, Los Angeles Rams 16

Eagles 25, Buccaneers 11 – Jalen Hurts throws for and runs for TD, as Eagles thump Buccaneers 25-11
Jalen Hurts threw for one touchdown and ran for another to help the Philadelphia Eagles remain unbeaten with a 25-11 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Hurts also led on his team on a game-ending drive that lasted more than nine minutes. The defending NFC champions are off to a 3-0 start in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1992-93. Hurts improved to 20-1 over his last 21 regular-season games. He tossed a 34-yard TD pass to Olamide Zaccheaus that helped Philly build a 13-3 halftime lead, and his 1-yard scoring run gave the Eagles a 17-point advantage early in the second half.

Bengals 19, Rams 16 – Burrow shakes off calf injury, throws for 259 yards as Bengals beat the Rams 19-16
Joe Burrow shook off a lingering calf injury, throwing for 259 yards as the Cincinnati Bengals beat the Los Angeles Rams 19-16 to get their first win after starting the season with two losses. Joe Mixon’s 14-yard touchdown run in the third quarter gave the reigning AFC North champs their first lead of the season. Meanwhile, Logan Wilson picked off Los Angeles quarterback Matthew Stafford twice and the Bengals sacked him six times. Stafford finished 18 for 39 for 269 yards as the Rams slipped to 1-2.

NFL – Lions scramble to prepare to play Packers for division lead on short week
The Detroit Lions have a short week to prepare to face the rival Green Bay Packers on the road with the NFC North lead at stake. The game is sure to have an edge because the Lions prevented the Packers from making the playoffs in Week 18 last season. Coach Dan Campbell says “there’s always something special about going to Lambeau Field.” Detroit is 2-1 thanks in part to an improved defense that held Atlanta to 183 total yards in Sunday’s win.  The Lions held Atlanta to 183 yards of offense on Sunday, the lowest total of Campbell’s three seasons as coach and only the second time his team has held an opponent under 200. Detroit had seven sacks for a total loss of 62 yards.

NFL – At 0-3 after a week of bad news, the Bears are in crisis mode
The Chicago Bears are in crisis mode. A 41-10 beatdown by Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs was the final blow during a brutal week for a franchise reeling with 13 consecutive losses. Coach Matt Eberflus says players need to maintain “belief in each other” and their coaches. The Bears will try to turn things around when they host the dysfunctional Denver Broncos. The Bears’ most recent win was a Monday night surprise at New England last Oct. 24. They came into this season with their sights set higher after finishing with the worst record in the NFL.

NCAAFB – Tucker’s attorney: MSU doesn’t have cause to fire Tucker over phone sex
Mel Tucker’s attorney says Michigan State does not have cause to fire its suspended football coach after Tucker acknowledged having phone sex with an activist and rape survivor because he did not “engage in unprofessional or unethical behavior” or violate his contract. Attorney Jennifer Belveal denied in a statement Monday that Tucker’s actions were acts of moral turpitude at the university that operates in the shadow of Larry Nassar’s abuse of more than 100 athletes. Michigan State informed Tucker it planned to fire him last week. Activist and rape survivor Brenda Tracy said Tucker sexually harassed her during a phone call in April 2022. Tucker says the phone sex was consensual.

NCAAFB – With Pac-12 unsettled, CFP managers meet to make difficult decision on bids
College Football Playoff managers will meet this week at the Big Ten offices outside Chicago. With the future of the Pac-12 still unsettled, it will be difficult for them to make a final decision on whether the number of places reserved for conference champions in the soon-to-be expanded field should remain six or be reduced to five. The CFP management committee will gather Tuesday and Wednesday at the Big Ten offices. The playoff expands from four teams to 12 next season, but conference realignment has led to a reconsideration about the selection process.

MHSAA – Winning streak ends at 41 games for Michigan high school football team
Michigan’s longest winning streak in eight-player high school football has ended at 41 games.  Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated Powers North Central 28-25 in the Upper Peninsula on Friday.  The streak, which included playoff victories, began in 2020, according to the Michigan High School Athletic Association.  A 45-yard touchdown pass from Danny Marcotte to Sammy Roberts put Lake Linden-Hubbell ahead for good with 1:30 remaining. “I told the guys after the game beating that team is a great accomplishment," coach Brett Gervais told The Daily Mining Gazette. In four previous games, North Central had outscored its opponents, 208-46. The longest winning streak in Michigan’s traditional 11-player football is 72 games by Hudson. It ran from 1968 through 1975.
