BCS Says No To Benton Harbor

As you heard first on Morning Sportsbeat Friday morning on 95.7 & 1400 WSJM Sports, the BCS Athletic Conference voted to accept Covert High School as a new member but not Benton Harbor.

According to information from the BCS conference, school superintendents met on November 10. Included in their meeting was a vote on whether to accept Benton Harbor and Covert. Benton Harbor’s application to join the conference for the 2017-2018 school year was not accepted by the required 70% of member schools. The final vote was 11 in favor and six opposed. 13 votes in favor of the move were needed. Covert’s application to join the BCS for 2017-2018 was accepted.

Also at the meeting, superintendents learned that Cassopolis, Centreville, Mendon, and White Pigeon have stated their plans to leave the BCS and proceed with the formation of a new athletic conference. The planned new conference would include those four schools and Bloomingdale, Bangor, Decatur, Marcellus, Eau Claire, and Hartford from the SAC. Tentative plans are for this new conference to be formed for the 2017-2018 school year.

Finally, superintendents from the remaining BCS schools will contact remaining members of the SAC to discuss how remaining schools from both conferences might be able to move forward together.
