Last Night
New Orleans Saints 24, Chicago Bears 17
Indianapolis Colts 27, Carolina Panthers 13
Detroit Lions (bye week)

Saints 24, Bears 17 – Taysom Hill’s TDs receiving and passing, lift Saints past Bears 24-17
Taysom Hill caught a touchdown pass and threw for another, Paulson Adebo intercepted two passes and also forced a fumble that he recovered, and the New Orleans Saints beat the Chicago Bears 24-17. The Saints forced five turnovers, intercepting rookie QB Tyson Bagent three times and recovering two fumbles. Those plays tipped the balance of a game in which the undrafted Bagent and the Bears often had the Saints’ defense off balance, outgaining New Orleans 368-301 in total yards and possessing the ball for just more than half the game.

Colts 27, Panthers 13 – Kenny Moore’s two pick-6s help Colts snap 3-game skid with 27-13 victory over Panthers
Kenny Moore returned two Bryce Young interceptions for touchdowns, Jonathan Taylor caught a touchdown pass from Gardner Minshew and the Indianapolis Colts defeated the Carolina Panthers 27-13 on Sunday to snap a three-game losing streak. Indianapolis’ much-maligned defense had allowed at least 37 points in each of its past three games and had allowed more points than any team in the league. But the Colts had no problem slowing down the No. 1 overall pick and a mostly listless Panthers offense. Moore became the first Colts player in history with two pick-6s in a game and the first NFL player to accomplish the feat since Tampa Bay’s Mike Edwards did it against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 2 of the 2021 season.

NFL – Bagent starts strong, but late breakdowns doom Bears in 24-17 loss to the Saints
Undrafted rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent and the Chicago Bears had their way with one of the top-rated defenses in the NFL for nearly three quarters. But they couldn’t cross the 50-yard-line in the fourth quarter. Bagent threw two interceptions and lost a fumble on a sack in the fourth quarter. He blamed himself for the Bears’ 24-17 loss to the New Orleans Saints. Chicago never got past its own 35-yard line in five series after tying the score at 17 late in the third quarter. Bagent was 18 of 30 for 220 yards with two touchdowns in this third start for injured starter Justin Fields. Bagent likely returns to the bench with Fields having returned to practice Friday.

Taylor Hall and Ryan Donato scored for Chicago, which lost for the fifth time in seven games. Arvid Soderblom finished with 36 saves.  The Devils held Chicago rookie Connor Bedard off the board, stopping the No. 1 draft pick’s goal-scoring streak at three games.  The Blackhawks held a 20-minute players only meeting after the game to sort out their woes.

NHL – Another ex-player says Blackhawks’ video coach sexually assaulted him in 2009-10
A former hockey player in the Chicago Blackhawks organization has alleged in a lawsuit the team’s former video coach Brad Aldrich sexually assaulted him during the 2009-10 season. He says the Blackhawks took no action when he complained because it didn’t want a disruption during its run to the Stanley Cup. The Chicago Tribune reported the plaintiff was a teammate of Kyle Beach, who reached a settlement with the Blackhawks in December 2021 after alleging he was sexually assaulted by Aldrich. The Blackhawks declined to comment on the specifics of the latest lawsuit in a statement to the Tribune.

NASCAR – Ryan Blaney earns 1st career NASCAR championship
Ryan Blaney raced to his first career NASCAR championship on Sunday by banging his way past contender Kyle Larson in the closing laps at Phoenix Raceway to give Team Penske back-to-back Cup titles. The third generation racer is the first Ohio-born driver to win the Cup title and followed teammate Joey Logano, who won for Roger Penske a year ago. Ross Chastain won the race in a Chevrolet for Trackhouse Racing and is the first driver to win the season finale while not racing for the championship since Denny Hamlin in 2013, one year before this current elimination format began.MLB – Eduardo Rodriguez opts out of last 3 years and $49 million of contract with Tigers
Eduardo Rodriguez opted out of the last three seasons and $49 million of his contract with the Detroit Tigers to become a free agent. Gene Mato confirmed his client’s decision. The right-hander was 13-9 with a 3.30 ERA last season. The 30-year-old Venezuelan is 82-53 with a 4.03 ERA over his career, which includes six years with the Boston Red Sox and two in Detroit. Sensing Rodriguez would make this move, the Tigers tried to trade him last season. Rodriguez used his no-trade clause to block a deal that would have sent him to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

MLB – Cubs right-hander Marcus Stroman opts out of final year of his contract
Chicago Cubs right-hander Marcus Stroman has opted out of the final year of contract, giving up a $21 million salary for 2024. Stroman signed a $71 million, three-year contract in December 2021. He is 77-76 with a 3.65 ERA over nine seasons with Toronto, the New York Mets and Cubs. Stroman went from dominating the first three months this past season and making his second All-Star team to struggling through injuries the rest of the way. He finished with a 3.95 ERA in 25 starts and 27 appearances.

MLB – Chicago White Sox decline their $14 million option on star shortstop Tim Anderson
The Chicago White Sox declined their $14-million option for next season on two-time All-Star shortstop Tim Anderson and bought him out for $1 million. The bat-flipping face of the franchise, Anderson led the majors with a .335 batting average in 2019 and made All-Star teams in 2021 and 2022. But he was dogged by injuries the past two years, including a sprained left knee and right shoulder soreness in 2023. Anderson is set to hit the free-agent market following his worst season. He batted .245 with just one homer and 25 RBIs in 123 games.

MLB – Tigers acquire veteran outfielder Mark Canha from Brewers
The Milwaukee Brewers have traded veteran outfielder Mark Canha to the Detroit Tigers rather than picking up his option for the 2024 season. The Brewers acquired minor league pitcher Blake Holub in the deal. Milwaukee was facing a Monday deadline on whether to pick up Canha’s $11.5 million team option for 2024 or pay a $2 million buyout. The Brewers instead dealt Canha to the Tigers. Canha batted .287 with a .373 on-base percentage, five homers and 33 RBIs in 50 games with the Brewers after they acquired him from the New York Mets at the trade deadline.

MLB – Cubs exercise options on pitcher Kyle Hendricks and catcher Yan Gomes’
Pitcher Kyle Hendricks’ $16 million option for 2024 was exercised Sunday by the Chicago Cubs, who also exercised a $6 million option on catcher Yan Gomes. Chicago’s decision made Hendricks’ contract worth $70 million over five seasons, and Gomes’ deal became guaranteed for at least $18 million over three years. Hendricks would have been due a $1.5 million buyout if the option had been declined and Gomes would have been due $1 million had his option been turned down. Hendricks, a 33-year-old right-hander, was 6-8 with a 3.74 ERA in 24 starts this year.
