MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL…
Virginia Tech 71, #3 Michigan St. 66
Landers Nolley II peeled off a screen and, without hesitation, let a 3-pointer fly from the wing. The ball dropped, giving Virginia Tech the cushion it needed in a 71-66 win over Michigan State at the Maui Invitational.
The Hokies grinded through a back-and-forth second half before going up 10 with 4½ minutes left. Michigan State fought back to pull within one, but Nolley responded with a 3 for a 68-64 lead with 47 seconds left. Virginia Tech made just enough free throws down the stretch to earn a spot in Tuesday’s semifinal against Dayton.
Michigan State (3-2) trailed 32-28 at halftime after preseason All-American Cassius Winston was limited to eight minutes due to two fouls.
Winston helped sparked a late run, but the Spartans couldn’t finish it off. Aaron Henry led Michigan State with 18 points and Winston was held to seven on 2-of-8 shooting.
Yale 73, Western Michigan 51
Jordan Bruner recorded 14 points and 13 rebounds to carry Yale to a 73-51 win over Western Michigan on Monday in the NIT Season Tip-Off.
Yale held the Broncos to 29.6% shooting from the field and more than 30 points below their season average. The Bulldogs made 13 3-pointers and had 14 assists.
Azar Swain had 15 points for Yale (4-3). Michael Flowers scored 16 points for the Broncos (4-3). Jared Printy and Brandon Johnson added 12 points apiece. Jason Whitens had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Luke Kennard scored 20 points and Blake Griffin added 17 to lead the Detroit Pistons past the Orlando Magic 103-88. The Magic were held to 15 points in the third quarter and 33 in the second half. They are now 0-7 on the road this season.

Carmelo Anthony had 25 points in just his fourth game of the season, CJ McCollum added 21, and the Portland Trail Blazers beat the Chicago Bulls 117-94. Damian Lillard had 13 points and 12 assists as Portland snapped a four-game losing streak. Anthony was 10 for 20 from the field, including 4 of 7 on 3-pointers. He now has 25,615 career points to move ahead of Alex English (26,613) into 18th place on the NBA’s career scoring list. Zach LaVine led the Bulls with 18 points.

T.J. Warren scored 26 points to lead the Indiana Pacers to a 126-114 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. Jeremy Lamb had 19 points and Aaron Holiday added 16 points off the bench for the Pacers (10-6), who have won three straight and seven of nine games.

Former NFL coach and Michigan State player Henry Bullough has died at 85, according to the school. Bullough played on the Michigan State team that won the national championship in 1952 and the Big Ten title the year after. He was an NFL head coach for parts of three seasons with New England and Buffalo.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL…
Denny Dock is returning to guide the Lakeshore Lancers once again. Dock retired from coaching the Lakeshore football team after the 2013 season after leading the team for 26 years. He was hired at Lakeshore in 1988 after head coaching stops at Hartford and Dowagiac High Schools.
Dock’s overall head coaching record is 263-78, including a 209-66 mark at Lakeshore. His 263 wins ranks him #1 all-time in Southwest Michigan (Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren Counties).
Dock led the Lancers to 26 winning seasons and four undefeated regular seasons. His Lakeshore teams qualified for the playoffs 18 times, including a run of 16 in a row. Under his direction, Lakeshore captured 12 conference titles, eight district championships, and four regional crowns.
BASEBALL…
The Tigers have acquired right-hander Dario Agrazal from the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash. The Detroit also announced they have requested unconditional release waivers on right-hander Drew VerHagen so he can pursue an opportunity in Japan.
A person familiar with the situation says the White Sox have placed Gold Glove second baseman Yolmer Sánchez on outright waivers. Sánchez had the second-highest fielding percentage among AL second baseman last season and won his first Gold Glove. He hit .252 with two homers. Sánchez made $4,625,000 this year and if Chicago had offered a contract by the Dec. 2 deadline likely would have gotten a salary of about $6 million.
