Chiefs 29, Broncos 19 – Chiefs force 5 TOs, beat Broncos 29-19 in AFC West showdown
Harrison Butker kicked five field goals, Marcus Peters returned a fumble 45 yards for a touchdown and the Kansas City Chiefs beat the turnover-prone Denver Broncos 29-19 on Monday night. Alex Smith threw for 202 yards and a touchdown, most of it going to tight end Travis Kelce , who hauled in seven balls for 133 yards and the score. The Chiefs (6-2) also intercepted Trevor Siemian three times and hopped on two fumbles to beat Denver (3-4) for the fourth straight time. Siemian finished 19 of 36 for 198 yards and a touchdown, and has now thrown eight picks and only three TD passes in the past five games. The Broncos have lost all but one of them.

NFL – Bears say TE Miller had “urgent” surgery on left leg
The Chicago Bears say tight end Zach Miller had “urgent” surgery to repair an artery in his left leg after suffering a gruesome injury in Sunday’s loss at New Orleans. The team says the operation Sunday to repair a torn popliteal artery was successful. Miller remains at University Medical Center New Orleans.  Miller dislocated his knee when he landed in the end zone attempting to catch a 25-yard touchdown pass from Mitchell Trubisky. The injury, which was replayed several times on the scoreboard, forced the 33-year-old tight end to be carted off and taken to the hospital.  After a replay review, officials ruled the ball hit the ground when Miller bobbled it on his way down.

NFL – Bears’ Freeman suspended 10 games for violating PED policy
The NFL has suspended injured Chicago Bears linebacker Jerrell Freeman 10 games for violating the league’s policy against performance-enhancing drugs. It was the second PED suspension in as many years for Freeman, who received a four-week punishment last season. The league says he will begin serving this one immediately. A sixth-year pro, Freeman is on injured reserve because of a pectoral injury he suffered in a season-opening loss to Atlanta. Freeman led Chicago with 110 tackles _ a team-high 86 solo, last season. He was with the Colts from 2012-2015.

NFL – Lions put Lelito on IR, sign Jacquies Smith
The Detroit Lions have put guard Tim Lelito on injured reserve with a thigh problem and signed defensive end Jacquies Smith. The team announced the moves Monday. Lelito played in two games this season for the Lions. Smith played in one game this season for Tampa Bay. He was limited to one game last season, when he hurt his knee in the opener. He started 11 games for the Buccaneers during the 2015 season.

NFL – Judge reinstates 6-game suspension for Cowboys’ Elliott
A federal judge has cleared the way for the NFL to enforce a six-game suspension of Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott over domestic violence allegations. U.S. District Judge Katherine Polk Failla on Monday denied the request for a preliminary injunction from players’ union attorneys working for Elliott. It’s the second time a federal ruling has overturned a reprieve that kept Elliott on the field, and likely will lead to another effort by for Elliott’s legal team to pursue other remedies. Elliott attended the roughly two-hour hearing in New York on Monday, a day after rushing for 150 yards and two touchdowns in the Cowboys’ 33-19 win at Washington.

NBA – Bulls’ Mirotic opts not to have surgery for facial fractures
Chicago Bulls forward Nikola Mirotic has decided not to have surgery to repair the broken bones in his face. Vice president of basketball operations John Paxson tells Chicago’s WBBM-AM 780 that Mirotic decided to let the fractures heal on their own. Mirotic suffered several broken bones as well as a concussion when he got into a fight with teammate Bobby Portis during practice on Oct. 17. The Bulls had said he would likely need surgery and miss four to six weeks. Because of the concussion, Mirotic did not have the operation right away. Paxson says the bones have started to heal so it’s “best” not to undergo surgery. He also says Mirotic will resume light activity _ mostly riding a bike _ on Tuesday. Portis was suspended eight games.

NBA – Man dies after Milwaukee Bucks arena construction fall
Authorities say a 57-year-old electrician died after falling last week from an 8-foot ladder at the construction site of a new arena for the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks.  The Milwaukee County medical examiner’s office confirmed the death Monday, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.  The man, who was not named, complained of chest pain and fell from the ladder last Wednesday, suffering traumatic injuries. He was transported to a hospital, where he died Saturday afternoon.     An autopsy was performed Monday.

NCAA Football – Michigan likely to start QB Peters against Minnesota
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh says quarterback Brandon Peters will likely take the first snap Saturday night against Minnesota. Harbaugh seemed to say Peters had already earned the start when he led the Wolverines to a 35-14 win over Rutgers. Two days later, Harbaugh refused to name a starter under center at his weekly news conference. Harbaugh says there’s a “51 percent,” chance the redshirt freshman makes his first start against the Golden Gophers. Peters replaced fifth-year senior John O’Korn against the Scarlet Knights and made the most of the chance to play. Peters was 10 of 14, completing passes to nine teammates, for 128 yards and a touchdown in his first extended opportunity to play.

NCAA Football – Alabama DB Deionte Thompson arrested in Texas assault case
Alabama safety Deionte Thompson and three other men have been indicted on charges stemming from a spring break fight, the Beaumont Enterprise reported Monday. According to the newspaper, the 20-year-old Thompson faces a second-degree elony charge of aggravated assault. Three others also face charges. A Galveston County grand jury returned the indictments last week, saying the four men caused “serious bodily injury” to 18-year-old redshirt sophomore at Alabama who was allegedly beaten and kicked.

NCAA Football – Shannon takes over, makes changes as Florida’s interim coach
Randy Shannon is shaking things up as Florida’s interim coach.  The former Miami coach replaced Jim McElwain on Monday and needed less than a day to make changes. Shannon opened up the quarterback job, essentially giving former Notre Dame starter Malik Zaire a chance to compete with struggling incumbent Feleipe Franks. He promoted defensive line coach Chris Rumph to defensive coordinator and elevated former Idaho head coach Robb Akey from quality control assistant to defensive line coach.

Golf – Tiger Woods to return in the Bahamas
Tiger Woods will be part of the 18-man field at the Hero World Challenge next month, his holiday tournament in the Bahamas. Woods has not played since he withdrew from the Dubai Desert Classic on Feb. 3 with back spasms, two months before undergoing his fourth back surgery in just over two years. He returned to competitive golf at last year’s Hero World Challenge after 15 months recovering from two back procedures.

NCAA Basketball – NCAA president: Major changes needed to restore public trust
NCAA President Mark Emmert says major changes are needed in college basketball before the 2018-19 season to show the public that the governing body is capable of running the sport in the wake of a bribery scandal. Emmert spoke Monday at a meeting of the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics. His comments were his most extensive since federal investigators in New York accused coaches at several schools, financial managers and an Adidas executive of using bribes to influence players’ choices of schools, shoe sponsors and agents. The revelations led to the firing of Louisville coach Rick Pitino and athletic director Tom Jurich. The NCAA this month created a commission chaired by former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to recommend changes for college basketball. Emmert says reform is necessary because “the public doesn’t have sufficient confidence in any of us in terms of our ability to resolve these issues.”

NCAA Basketball – NC State loses NCAA appeal for Beverly’s eligibility
The NCAA has upheld its decision that North Carolina State freshman Braxton Beverly is ineligible to play this season. Coach Kevin Keatts said Monday that N.C. State’s appeal for Beverly’s immediate eligibility was denied. He may practice this season and will have four years of eligibility remaining, beginning in 2018-19. The first-year coach said Beverly is “devastated” and that “this is a situation where adults failed a young man, and he’s the one paying the price.” Beverly originally signed with Ohio State and took classes there but received a release after Thad Matta’s ouster as coach. He signed with N.C. State in August. N.C. State announced Oct. 13 that its initial request for Beverly’s eligibility was denied, and it appealed that decision 10 days later.
