Rockies 7, Tigers 3 – Arenado hits 3-run shot for 30th HR, Rockies top Tigers 7-3
Nolan Arenado capped a four-run seventh inning with his 30th homer, and the Colorado Rockies beat the Detroit Tigers 7-3 on Tuesday night. Arenado’s three-run shot broke open a close game and helped the Rockies win for the fourth time in six tries. Colorado increased its lead to four games over Milwaukee for the second NL wild card. Mikie Mahtook tied the game for Detroit in the top of the seventh with a two-run homer, his 10th, before the Rockies rallied in the bottom half.  Colorado went ahead 4-3 on singles by Jonathan Lucroy and Trevor Story, and a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Carlos Gonzalez off starter Michael Fulmer (10-12). Charlie Blackmon reached on a fielder’s choice. Warwick Saupold walked DJ LeMahieu, and Arenado followed with his three-run drive to reach 30 homers for the third straight season. He leads the majors with 111 RBIs.

Twins 6, White Sox 4 – Pair of HRs by Polanco spark Twins in 6-4 win vs. White Sox
Jorge Polanco homered twice and Ervin Santana struck out seven while pitching into the seventh inning, leading Minnesota past Chicago.  Eduardo Escobar drove in two runs for the Twins, who started the day with a one-game lead over the Los Angeles Angels in the crowded race for the second AL wild card. Santana (14-7) matched his highest total for wins since he was a 17-game winner 2010 with the Angels. Matt Belisle pitched the ninth for his fifth save. James Shields (2-5) has not won for the White Sox in 10 starts.

Cubs 4, Pirates 1 – Arrieta continues strong second half, Cubs beat Pirates 4-1
Jake Arrieta continued his dominant second half with six innings of two-hit ball, Ben Zobrist homered and Chicago beat Pittsburgh.  Anthony Rizzo went 3 for 4 with an RBI, Alex Avila had an RBI single and Jason Heyward added a sacrifice fly for NL Central-leading Chicago. Arrieta (14-8) struck out four and retired the last seven batters he faced, leaving after 97 pitches with a 3-0 lead. He hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in any of his nine starts since the All-Star break, going 6-1 with a 1.59 ERA during that span.  Wade Davis got the final three outs for his 27th save. Chad Kuhl (6-10) allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Harvey – Sports teams, players pitching in for Harvey aide
While J.J. Watt still thinks the Houston-Dallas preseason game shouldn’t be played because of catastrophic flooding in Houston, the star defensive end for the Texans is getting his wish that money generated by the exhibition finale will go to Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts.  Watt, who started a fundraising page that reached $4 million in donations in barely more than two days, reiterated his stance that the game originally scheduled for Houston on Thursday night should have been scrapped instead of moved to the home of the Cowboys.  The Texans, who are in charge of the game since they are technically the home team, said that tickets and parking will be $25 apiece. Tickets were available online starting Tuesday night. Watt almost didn’t know to react to the stunning growth of his effort, which started with a web page and a selfie video Sunday. Since then, he’s been offering video updates as the total climbed. The original goal was $200,000.

Tennis – US Open – Federer advances… but barely
Third seed Roger Federer avoided a first-round exit at the US Open by pulling out a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 over 70th-ranked Frances Tiafoe of the U.S. Top seeds Rafael Nadal and Karolina Pliskova advanced to the second round in straight sets, but defending women’s champ Angelique Kerber was knocked out in the opening round by 45th-ranked Naomi Osaka, 6-3, 6-1. American Madison Keys was among the winners on a day in which most of the matches were postponed or suspended by rain.

NCAA Football – Stetson player dies during practice
A sophomore from Georgia collapsed and died during football practice at a Florida university.  Stetson University officials said in a statement that 19-year-old Nicholas Adam Blakely collapsed during a Monday evening practice. The accounting major from Lawrenceville, Georgia, was on the sidelines when he complained of not feeling well. He collapsed and was taken to Florida Hospital Deland, where he died. The statement said Coach Roger Hughes broke the news to his team and counselors are on hand to help them deal with their loss. Blakely was a defensive back who was redshirted last season and never played in a college football game. The team was preparing for its season opener at Sacred Heart University on Saturday in Connecticut. He attended Archer High School, which is northeast of Atlanta.

NFL – Eric Dickerson signs 1-day deal to retire with the LA Rams
Eric Dickerson has signed a one-day contract to retire as a member of the Los Angeles Rams, reuniting the famous running back with his first NFL franchise.  The Rams formalized the deal at their training complex Tuesday, with Dickerson wearing his Hall of Fame blazer to complete the paperwork. Dickerson set the single-season NFL rushing record and suited up for four playoff teams during his tenure with the Rams from 1983-87. He is still among the most popular players in franchise history, with his jersey frequently outnumbering those of any current player in the Coliseum stands. Dickerson also became a vice president of business development with the Rams, who returned home to Los Angeles last year after 21 seasons in St. Louis. Dickerson will be involved in fan outreach efforts as the Rams attempt to cement their primacy in Southern California after the relocation of the Chargers.

NBA – Thomas: “I am not damaged”
All-Star point guard Isaiah Thomas believes he will fully recover from a right hip injury that has threatened to void his recent trade to Cleveland.  Thomas, who was dealt by the Boston Celtics to the Cavaliers last week for star Kyrie Irving, told ESPN he has made progress in his recovery.  After Thomas underwent a physical last week, the Cavaliers had some concerns about the results. A person familiar with the findings told The Associated Press the trade would not be finalized until the team completed a ”deep and thorough review.” The Cavs have continued to weigh their options in recent days, and it’s possible they will ask for the Celtics for more compensation – likely another draft pick.  Per league rules, a deal can be voided if a traded player fails his physical. The teams have until 10 a.m. on Thursday to complete the blockbuster deal.

NBA – Olshey rewarded
The Portland Trail Blazers have agreed to a multi-year contract extension with President of Basketball Operations Neil Olshey.  Olshey was named general manager in 2012 and promoted to his current positon in 2015. The Blazers have been to the NBA playoffs the last four seasons. The team did not disclose terms of the deal, which runs through the 2020-21 season.

CFL – Art Briles won’t get job with Canadian Football League
The Canadian Football League and Hamilton Tiger-Cats say former Baylor coach Art Briles will not be joining the team as an assistant coach after all. The change comes less than 12 hours after the Tiger-Cats announced that Briles would be joining head coach June Jones’ staff. The league and team responded to public backlash toward Briles, who left Baylor amid a sexual assault scandal.
