Game 4: Cubs 6, Cardinals 4 – Cubs win NL Division Series, beat Cardinals 6-4 in Game 4
The Chicago Cubs clinched a postseason series at Wrigley Field for the first time ever, getting home runs from Kyle Schwarber, Anthony Rizzo and Javier Baez in beating the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 Tuesday to win the NL Division Series in four games. A day after hitting a postseason-record six homers, the Cubs hammered their way into the NL Championship Series by taking the best-of-five set before a rollicking crowd. Manager Joe Maddon’s bunch of wild-card Cubs will face the winner of the Los Angeles Dodgers-New York Mets matchup. The Mets took a 2-1 lead into Game 4 Tuesday night. The Cubs last reached the NLCS in 2003, when they lost in seven games to the Marlins. Chicago dropped those final two at home, including the infamous Bartman defeat in Game 6. Wrigley Field hosted its first Cubs game in 1916, eight years after they last won the World Series.

NBA – Odom hospitalized after found unresponsive
Authorities say former NBA star Lamar Odom was hospitalized after he was found unconscious Tuesday at a Nevada brothel. The 35-year-old Odom was in a Las Vegas hospital Tuesday night and there was no immediate word on his condition, officials said. The Nye County Sheriff’s Department was called at about 3:15 p.m. to Love Ranch in Crystal, Nevada about 70 miles outside of Las Vegas for a report of an unresponsive man needing an ambulance. The 35-year-old played most of his 14-year career in Los Angeles with the Clippers and Lakers. He was the NBA Sixth Man of the Year in 2011, two years before his final game.  Odom saw reality TV fame through his four-year marriage to Khloe Kardashian.

WNBA – Lynx, Fever ready for WNBA Finals-deciding Game 5
Tamika Catchings and Lindsay Whalen have been butting heads in the playoffs for 10 years now, dating back to the 2005 Eastern Conference finals.  As the two proud veterans prepare for one more playoff game, they are appreciating the chance more than ever.  Catchings and the Indiana Fever visit Whalen’s Minnesota Lynx on Wednesday night for the deciding Game 5 of the WNBA Finals. It’s the first time the best-of-five series has gone the distance since 2009.  The 36-year-old Catchings has already said she will retire after next season. The 33-year-old Whalen has been slowed by leg injuries this season and may not have many more left.  Whalen is chasing her third title in the last five years. Catchings and the Fever are looking for their second.

NCAA Football – Campus Martius to host Spartan-Wolverine football rally
Some of the excitement around the Spartan and Wolverine football rivalry kicks off in a downtown Detroit park. The Big Game Detroit Rally Wednesday at Campus Martius will feature a pep rally, Detroit high school marching bands, lunchtime games, live music and an after-work tailgate party. Team flag football also will be played on the Campus Martius lawn. The Spartans of Michigan State University visit the University of Michigan Wolverines Saturday in Ann Arbor. It is one of college football’s most heated rivalries and has more at stake this season because of each team’s success.  The Spartans are 6-0 overall and ranked seventh in The Associated Press football poll. The 12th-ranked Wolverines are 5-1. Michigan has historically dominated the series that dates to 1898, winning nearly two-thirds of the matchups.

US Soccer – USA knocks of Canada
Marc Pelosi and Jordan Kiesewetter scored second-half goals as the U.S. beat Canada 2-0 to finish third in the CONCACAF qualifying tournament and set up a playoff game against Colombia for a spot in the Rio Olympics. Pelosi scored in the 69th minute, blasting a shot from top of the 18-yard box when the ball rolled to his feet after a scramble off a corner kick. Canada played with only 10 players the entire second half after midfielder Giuliano Frano received a second yellow card before halftime.

NFL – NFL admits error in clock on Monday night
The NFL has acknowledged an officiating error during final moments of Monday’s game between the Chargers and visiting Steelers. Eighteen seconds were incorrectly run off the clock late in the fourth quarter of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 24-20 victory at the San Diego Chargers, and none of the game officials noticed the gaffe and corrected it. After the Chargers hit a go-ahead field goal with 2:56 remaining, the ensuing kickoff went for a touchback, but the clock rolled down to 2:38 instead of remaining at 2:56.

NFL – Drew Stanton, foundation outfit team with gear for safety
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Drew Stanton is helping to outfit a football team at the suburban Detroit high school he graduated from with special equipment to help protect players from internal injuries. The former Michigan State player’s visit Tuesday to Harrison High School in Farmington Hills is in partnership with the Taylor Haugen Foundation. The foundation was created by two Niceville, Florida, parents after their son, a sophomore at Niceville High School, died from internal injuries sustained on the football field in 2008. It has already outfitted nearly 3,000 players in eight states with gear. Experts say young football players are especially vulnerable to injuries because there are such variations in the sizes and skill levels of players during their early teen years while they are still growing.
