MLB – Major League Baseball
Yesterday
Detroit Tigers 4, Minnesota Twins 2
Chicago White Sox 11, Cleveland Indians 4
Chicago Cubs 4, St. Louis Cardinals 1

Tigers 4, Twins 2 – Tigers rally past Twins 4-2, pull within 1 of wild card
Miguel Cabrera and Ian Kinsler homered, and the Detroit Tigers scored two runs in the seventh inning on close plays at the plate, rallying for a 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Monday night. Andrew Romine slid in safely with the tying run on a double by Jose Iglesias, and Iglesias scored on Kinsler’s sacrifice fly to put the Tigers ahead 3-2. Cabrera’s homer in the eighth gave Detroit an insurance run, and the Tigers pulled within a game of Baltimore for the American League’s second wild card. Shane Greene (4-4) got the win in relief, and Bruce Rondon worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the eighth. Francisco Rodriguez walked two in the ninth but held on for his 41st save in 45 chances. Brian Dozier hit his 40th homer, and Kurt Suzuki also went deep for the Twins. Alex Wimmers (1-2) took the loss.

White Sox 11, Indians 4 – Garcia powers White Sox to 11-4 win over Indians
Avisail Garcia matched a career high with four hits, including a tiebreaking home run, and the Chicago White Sox pounded the sloppy Cleveland Indians 11-4 on Monday night. Todd Frazier hit his career-best 36th homer and Adam Eaton also went deep as the White Sox improved to 4-3 on their 10-game homestand. Tim Anderson had three of Chicago’s 16 hits and Jose Abreu drove in two runs, backing another strong start by Miguel Gonzalez. Cleveland had its AL Central lead trimmed to six games over Detroit, which rallied for a 4-2 victory over Minnesota. The Indians had won eight of their last nine against the White Sox, but Lonnie Chisenhall misplayed two balls in right field and another run scored on a passed ball by Roberto Perez.

Cubs 4, Cardinals 1 – Hendricks loses no-hit bid in 9th, Cubs beat Cardinals 4-1
Kyle Hendricks took a no-hitter into the ninth inning before giving up Jeremy Hazelbaker’s leadoff home run, and the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 Monday night to close in on the NL Central crown.  Hazelbaker drove an 0-2 pitch into the right-field stands for his 12th homer this season. Hendricks, the major league ERA leader, was relieved by Aroldis Chapman. “Just left that one up right there. What are you going to do?” Hendricks said. Ben Zobrist and Dexter Fowler homered for the Cubs, who lowered their magic number to three for clinching the division crown. They lead the second-place Cardinals by 17 games. Soon after Hazelbaker’s shot cleared the fence, teammates went to the mound to talk to Hendricks _ leading to an argument between Cubs manager Joe Maddon and plate umpire Joe West. Maddon was ejected, and Chapman came in.

MLB – Detroit’s Upton leaves game with calf injury
Justin Upton left Detroit’s game against Minnesota on Monday night because of a strained left calf. Upton was taken out in the fourth inning. It wasn’t clear when the left fielder hurt himself, but in the third inning, he tried to make a spectacular catch at the wall on Brian Dozier’s home run.   Upton has 22 home runs so far in his first season with the Tigers.

WNBA – Sky star Delle Donne to undergo thumb surgery
Chicago Sky star Elena Delle Donne will undergo surgery on Tuesday to repair her injured right thumb.  The reigning WNBA MVP was injured last Wednesday during the first half against Washington. The Sky made the announcement Monday. There is no timetable for her return. Delle Donne, who won the scoring title in 2015, is tied for the scoring lead this season with New York’s Tina Charles at 21.5 points per game. Chicago clinched a playoff spot on Sunday with a 96-86 victory over Connecticut.

NFL – National Football League – Week 1
Yesterday
Pittsburgh Steelers 38, Washington Redskins 16
San Francisco 49ers 28, Los Angeles Rams 0

Steelers 38, Redskins 16 – Steelers roll in their season opener
Ben Roethlisberger threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns as the Pittsburgh Steelers whipped Washington 38-16 in the season opener for both teams. DeAngelo Williams led the Steelers’ ground attack by rushing for 143 yards and a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns on 26 carries. Antonio Brown had little trouble breaking free of Washington’s secondary, finishing with eight receptions for 126 yards and two scores.

49ers 28, Rams 0 – 49ers open Chip Kelly era with 28-0 victory over Rams
Carlos Hyde ran for 88 yards and two touchdowns and the San Francisco 49ers posted a shutout in to spoil the Rams’ first game since moving back to Los Angeles with a 28-0 victory Monday night. Shaun Draughn also ran for a score and Blaine Gabbert threw a touchdown pass to Vance McDonald to help the 49ers win their first game under coach Chip Kelly in convincing fashion.

NFL – Lions put up big numbers in first game post-Megatron
Until the final half-minute of their season opener, the Detroit Lions seemed to be following last year’s script. They’d let a sizeable lead slip away and were on the verge of a tough loss on the road.  Matthew Stafford’s final drive changed the outlook entirely. Detroit came away with a 39-35 win at Indianapolis on Sunday, so instead of bemoaning a defensive collapse that let the Colts back in the game, the Lions can rejoice over a close win. In their first game since Calvin Johnson’s retirement, they had 28 first downs and 448 yards of offense. The Lions will have a chance to build on their win when they play their home opener Sunday against a Tennessee team that won only three games a season ago and lost to Minnesota on Sunday.

NFL – Bears look to regroup after starting season on familiar note
The Chicago Bears came into the season with a different look but started it on that same old losing note. A 23-14 season-opening loss at Houston on Sunday showed they still have plenty of work to do if they’re going to improve on a last-place finish in the NFC North. Quarterback Jay Cutler took a beating behind a revamped line. The offense stalled after a promising start and a defense that got a makeover failed to make enough plays. It all added up to a rocky opening for a team that went 6-10 last season. Coach John Fox says the team’s lineup hasn’t really been complete in its present form for long, especially the offensive line. He says the ability is there but it’s now important to get everyone on the “same page.” Fox’s teams in Carolina and Denver made big jumps in his second season, and the Bears would love to see that pattern continue in Chicago. But there is clearly plenty of work to do heading into their matchup against Philadelphia on Monday night.

NFL – Browns QB injured
One week into the new NFL season, and the Cleveland Browns already are in desperate shape. After losing their season opener to Philadelphia, the Browns learned today that QB Robert Griffin III will be out at least eight games after breaking his left shoulder on a run yesterday.

NCAA Football – No. 4 Michigan averaging almost a point per minute
No. 4 Michigan is averaging nearly a point per minute through two games, spreading the ball around to an array of options through the air and on the ground.  Fielding H. Yost would be proud. The former Wolverines coach had four high-powered offenses score more than 100 points in their first two games, and Michigan won 56 straight from 1901-05 with what were known as his “Point-a-Minute” teams.  Michigan (2-0) has a long way to be that dominant under second-year coach Jim Harbaugh and perhaps that’s why he pumped the brakes a bit Monday, only terming the season as “So far, so good.” The Wolverines’ 114 points through the first two games are the fourth-highest total in school history and its most since 1914 under Yost. Michigan could face a stiffer challenge Saturday when it hosts Colorado. The Buffaloes are coming off wins over Colorado State and Idaho State by a combined score of 100-14.

NCAA Football – Rules committee official: OSU error shouldn’t prompt changes
The officiating error that gave Central Michigan a last-play chance to beat Oklahoma State Saturday is unlikely to lead to changes in the way officials enforce penalties at the end of games.  Rogers Redding, the former national coordinator of officials who sits on the NCAA’s football rules committee, told The Associated Press on Monday that the circumstances that led to the mistake were rare. He said the goal is to have rules that stay consistent throughout the game.  Also Monday, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said he does not want to play future nonconference games without officials from Power Five conferences. Gundy says he’ll encourage Oklahoma State athletic director Mike Holder not to sign a contract unless the officials are from a Power Five conference.

High School Sports – Surge in ER visits for injuries, concussions from soccer
A new study says that soccer injuries are sending soaring numbers of U.S. kids to emergency rooms. Many cases are kids with concussions needing urgent medical care. The findings are based on 25 years of data. The research was conducted at the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. The study says that in 1990, the number of concussions or head injuries treated in emergency rooms was 2 per 10,000 players in 1990. In 2013, the rate jumped to almost 30 per 10,000 people. Researchers and sports medicine experts believe the growing number of cases reflect not only soccer’s growing popularity, but also a greater awareness about concussions and their potential risks.

MHSAA – MHSAA says unique concussion program works
The Michigan High School Athletic Association says its unique sideline concussion testing program for athletes in football and other sports is having a positive impact but long-term funding is an issue as it heads into its second and final year. Executive Director Jack Roberts says member schools in its pilot program removed players for possible concussions at a higher rate than schools that were not. His group on Monday released results of its first head-injury survey of more than 750 high schools from 2015-2016 sports. The association started the program last fall with 62 schools. It includes baseline testing of athletes in football and other sports to help with concussion diagnosis. The association expects to spend $30,000 this year but will have fewer school involved because of expense and commitment.
