Reds 13, Cubs 6 – Reds power past Cubs as 4-run 6th leads to 13-6 win
Eugenio Suarez and Adam Duvall hit two-run homers in a four-run sixth inning and the Cincinnati Reds took advantage of two late Chicago errors in a 13-6 victory over the Cubs on Monday night.  Duvall, who was called up from Triple-A earlier Monday, snapped a 5-5 tie with his pinch-hit homer off Cubs reliever Justin Grimm (2-4), who surrendered all four runs in one-third of an inning. Grimm started the inning by walking Ivan DeJesus Jr. and then gave up the home run to Suarez that tied it. The Reds, who entered Monday having lost five of their last six, used the rally to erase a two-run deficit. Cincinnati tackled on six unearned runs in the ninth off Chicago relievers Travis Wood and James Russell after second baseman Starlin Castro committed two of his three errors in the inning.

MLB – Playoff-hopeful Cubs get OF Austin Jackson from Seattle
The playoff-hopeful Chicago Cubs have acquired outfielder Austin Jackson from the Seattle Mariners for a player to be named and an international draft slot Mariners interim general manager Jeff Kingston announced the deal Monday night. Because it was made before Sept. 1, Jackson will be eligible for the postseason if the Cubs get that far. The Cubs also receive cash in the deal. They designated infielder Mike Olt for assignment to make room on the roster. Chicago began the day with a 5 ½ game lead over San Francisco for the second NL wild card. The 28-year-old Jackson was traded from Detroit to the Mariners in July 2014. He was hitting .272 with eight homers and 38 RBIs in 107 games this season.

NFL – Lions activate Bell, Ngata, cut Broyles, 9 others
The Detroit Lions have activated running back Joique Bell off the physically unable to perform list and defensive tackle Haloti Ngata off the active/non-football injury list. Bell has missed all of training camp while recovering from knee and Achilles tendon surgeries. Ngata has been out with a hamstring problem.  The Lions also cut wide receiver Ryan Broyles. Broyles was the Lions’ second-round pick in 2012 and was never able to gain much traction because of season-ending injuries his first two seasons. Broyles tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in his senior year at Oklahoma and then tore his right ACL his rookie season. After recovering from the second ACL injury, Broyles suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon.

NFL – Bucs trade TE Tim Wright to Lions for kicker Kyle Brindza
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have acquired rookie kicker Kyle Brindza from the Detroit Lions for tight end Tim Wright.  Brindza converted all three of his field-goal attempts this preseason for the Lions, who signed him as an undrafted college free agent out of Notre Dame. This is the second straight summer that the Bucs have traded Wright, a third-year pro who won a Super Bowl with New England last season. The tight end was dealt to the Patriots last August in the trade that brought guard Logan Mankins to Tampa Bay. Wright re-signed with the Bucs after being waived by New England this offseason. He had 26 receptions for 259 yards and six touchdowns for the Patriots in 2014.

NFL – Cousins gets Redskins starting job
Kirk Cousins will be under center when Washington opens its NFL schedule. Coach Jay Gruden has announced that Cousins will be his starting quarterback for the season, saying the Michigan State product gives his team the best chance to win. Cousins was selected over Robert Griffin III, who was thought to have the job until he was held out of Saturday’s preseason game because of a concussion suffered the previous week.

NFL – Deflategate – No decision in “Deflategate”
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady couldn’t agree, so now a judge will decide the fate of “Deflategate.” Judge Richard Berman says both sides tried hard to reach a deal during a Monday morning meeting but failed. He says he expects to rule as early as Tuesday whether Brady must serve a four-game suspension to start the season for his alleged role in using underinflated footballs during the playoffs last season. Goodell upheld the suspension in July. The NFL Players Association wants the suspension nullified.

NFL – Deflategate – Mocked artist gets nod of approval from Pats QB Tom Brady
A courtroom artist who some Internet critics say made New England quarterback Tom Brady look like an aging cartoon villain has gotten a wave and a “thank you” from the superstar. Jane Rosenberg returned to Manhattan federal court Monday several weeks after her drawing at Brady’s first “Deflategate” hearing became a trending topic on Twitter, Facebook and other social networks. She says she was nearly alone in court finishing her drawing when Brady left a conference room and walked nearby with his lawyers. She says he waved, looked her way and said “thank you.” Rosenberg’s not reading too much into it, saying he might just be “a polite guy who waves to everybody.” Outside the courthouse, she described her Monday sketch as “not so great,” bemoaning that her view was obstructed by one of Brady’s lawyers and she had only a few minutes to draw. The hearing lasted less than five minutes.

NCAA Football – Freshmen push into Texas lineup for No. 11 Notre Dame
Texas has released a depth chart full of youth for the Saturday night opener at No. 11 Notre Dame.  Six freshmen starters are on Monday’s chart along with 23 more throughout the two- and three-deep position listings. Even in spots occupied by upper classmen, the top backup is a freshman at eight positions. The lineup was ripe for the picking for a heralded group of newcomers. The Longhorns went 6-7 last year and were blown out in the last two games against TCU and Arkansas.

NCAA Football – Fisher names Golson starting QB for No. 10 Florida State
Everett Golson will be Florida State’s starting quarterback when the No. 10 Seminoles host Texas State on Saturday. Coach Jimbo Fisher ended the suspense Monday when he made the announcement following practice. Fisher says Golson “has a good grasp of things. Making reads, plays and getting on the edge with his legs when he has to,” Golson, a graduate transfer, started 23 games at Notre Dame in 2012 and ’14. In 25 games, he threw for 5,850 yards, 41 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. He also ran for 14 touchdowns. Golson was listed third on the preseason depth chart but beat out junior Sean Maguire and redshirt freshman J.J. Cosentino. Golson and Maguire split the reps with the first team the past two weeks.

Olympics – Los Angeles poised to vote on 2024 Olympic plan
With Boston out, Los Angeles appears on the verge of stepping in as the U.S. candidate for the 2024 Olympic Games.  The City Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday on a proposal to authorize Mayor Eric Garcetti to execute agreements related to the Olympic bid.  If approved, the U.S. Olympic Committee is expected to announce LA is the candidate.  Rome, Paris, Hamburg, Germany and Budapest, Hungary are already in the mix.  The USOC cut ties with Boston in July.  The International Olympic Committee will pick the host city in 2017.  Many financial details of the Los Angeles plan remain vague.  City analysts warn developing an Olympic Village could significantly exceed the projected $1 billion cost.

Olympics – Japan could scrap Olympic logo over plagiarism allegation<
Tokyo Olympic organizers are expected to scrap the logo for the 2020 Games following another allegation its Japanese designer might have used copied materials in presentations of the design. Organizers have supported designer Kenjiro Sano against allegations of plagiarizing the design, but Japan’s national broadcaster NHK said Tuesday that the support will be withdrawn as a result of new accusations that Sano allegedly used an image from someone else’s website without authorization. There was no immediate comment from Olympic officials on reports that the logo will be withdrawn. Sano has faced allegations of plagiarism since the logo’s July debut. A Belgian designer sued the International Olympic Committee over similarity of his logo for a theater. Sano denied the allegation, but has faced other plagiarism questions over his past designs.

Tennis – US Open – Day 1 at the Open
The defending women’s and men’s singles champions were easy winners in the opening round of the U.S. Open. Top-ranked Serena Williams didn’t drop a game in her match with Vitalia Diatchenko. Williams was leading 2-0 in the second set when Diatchenko retired due to injury. Williams is trying to become the first player since Steffi Graf in 1988 to complete a calendar grand slam. She’s also trying to match Graf’s professional-era record of 22 Grand Slam singles titles.  Top ranked Novak Djokovic made quick work of Brazil’s Joao Souza 6-1, 6-1, 6-1.
