Tigers 4, White Sox 3 – Saltalamacchia’s HR lifts Tigers over White Sox 4-3
Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 4-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Monday night. Justin Upton also went deep for the Tigers, who pulled within a game of Baltimore for the American League’s second wild card.  Detroit trailed 3-2 after a solo homer in the seventh by Chicago’s Tyler Saladino, but Saltalamacchia’s towering drive to right-center off Nate Jones (5-3) put the Tigers ahead. Justin Wilson (4-4) got the win in relief, and Francisco Rodriguez pitched a perfect ninth for his 37th save in 40 chances. Saladino drove in all three Chicago runs. James Shields allowed two runs and six hits in six innings, ending an awful August on a decent note, but the White Sox couldn’t hold a one-run lead for him.

Cubs 8, Pirates 7 (13 innings) – Cubs rally for 8-7 win against Pirates in 13 innings
Miguel Montero hit a game-ending RBI single in the 13th inning, and the Chicago Cubs rallied for a wild 8-7 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night. Dexter Fowler, Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo set the stage for Montero’s clutch swing with consecutive RBI singles against Jeff Locke (9-8), plating the tying run. After Ben Zobrist was walked intentionally, Montero lined a clean single into left field. Rob Zastryzny (1-0) got his first major league win despite allowing Josh Harrison’s sacrifice fly in the top half of the inning. Jorge Soler and Willson Contreras homered for the Cubs, and Javier Baez collected four hits. Pittsburgh had won eight straight road games. It fell 1 1/2 games back of St. Louis for the second NL wild card.

MLB – Detroit’s Maybin leaves game after headfirst slide
Tigers outfielder Cameron Maybin left Monday night’s game against the Chicago White Sox in the fifth inning after bruising his left thumb on what turned out to be a needless headfirst slide into second base. The team announced X-rays were negative. Maybin was trying to steal second when Ian Kinsler took ball four, meaning there was no play. The throw went to second anyway, and when Maybin slid in, his left hand appeared to make contact with second baseman Tyler Saladino’s knee.  Maybin missed over a month at the start of the season with a broken left wrist.

NFL – Lions trade WR Jeremy Kerley to 49ers to OG Brandon Thomas
The Detroit Lions have dealt receiver Jeremy Kerley to San Francisco for offensive guard Brandon Thomas. Thomas is expected to compete for a roster spot on Detroit’s shaky offensive line. Kerley was expendable after the Lions signed former 49ers receiver Anquan Boldin over the offseason.

NFL – Bosa signs with Chargers
The San Diego Chargers finally have their No. 1 draft pick in the fold, signing defensive end Joey Bosa to a four-year contract.  The deal ends Bosa’s month-long holdout and comes days after the Chargers announced they were pulling their offer off the table. The Ohio State product was the third overall selection in this year’s draft.

Tennis – US Open – Nadal opens with win
Fourth-seed Rafael Nadal opened play at the U.S Open with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 win over Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan. Among the other first-day winners are women’s No. 2 Angelique Kerber, third seed Garbine Muguruza and two-time U.S. Open runner-up Caroline Wozniacki.

NCAA Football – Jim Harbaugh mum on plan at QB for No. 7 Michigan opener
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh says yes, he knows who he’ll start at quarterback for Michigan in the Wolverines’ season opener but no — he’s not ready to make his choice public. He would only say yesterday that he’ll tell everyone before Saturday, with the choice between Wilton Speight and John O’Korn. Even though Harbaugh would not tell reporters who will take the first snap for his second team with the Wolverines, he did sound pleased with both candidates and the process that played out behind closed doors this month.

NCAA Football – Ex-Western Michigan football players in court on charges
Two Western Michigan football players who were kicked off the team after their arrest have appeared in court on armed robbery charges. Bond was set Monday at $100,000 each for freshmen Ron George of Pittsburgh and Bryson White of Mason, Ohio. They’re accused of using a gun and knife to rob a woman at her Kalamazoo apartment Friday night. They’re charged with armed robbery, first-degree home invasion and larceny in a building. George, a linebacker, asked for a court-appointed lawyer. White, a wide receiver, said he has an attorney, but he appeared by video from jail without one. Western Michigan coach P.J. Fleck removed them from the team Sunday, saying “we are moving forward.”

NCAA Basketball – Former Michigan State star Appling arrested in Detroit
Former Michigan State basketball player Keith Appling is in trouble again with police. Detroit police say Appling was arrested Sunday night after he drove away from a traffic stop. Sgt. Mike Woody says a gun was found in a bag on the side of the road. It’s Appling’s third encounter with Detroit-area police since spring. Gun charges are pending in two separate cases in Dearborn and Detroit. Defense attorney Cyril Hall says Appling pulled away from police to get to a “safe” spot to deal with officers. He says Appling disputes that he had a weapon. No charges have been filed. The arrest could affect Appling’s bond in the other cases. He played for Michigan State from 2010-2014 and had two brief contracts with the Orlando Magic last season.
