Royals 3, Tigers 1 – Kennedy pitches Royals past Tigers 3-1; Cabrera hurt
Ian Kennedy pitched effectively into the seventh inning to win for the first since June 26 as the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 3-1 on Monday night. The Tigers lost slugger Miguel Cabrera after four innings to a strained left biceps. Cabrera appeared to injure himself in a first-inning collision with Cheslor Cuthbert at first base, but batted twice before leaving the game.     Detroit said Cabrera is day to day. Kennedy (7-9) ended an eight-start winless streak, allowing one run on five hits and a walk in 6 2/3 innings. Three relievers finished, with Kelvin Herrera pitching the ninth for his fifth save. Daniel Norris (1-1) took the loss, allowing two runs _ one earned _ in 5 1/3 innings.

MLB – Cabrera leaves Tigers-Royals game with biceps injury
Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera left the game against the Kansas City Royals with a left biceps strain. In the first inning Monday, pitcher Daniel Norris threw wildly to first and Cabrera collided with Cheslor Cuthbert while trying to catch the errant throw. He didn’t show any immediate signs of distress but was grimacing during both of his at-bats. He flew out to deep center field in the fourth, still looking uncomfortable, and was replaced at first base by Jarrod Saltalamacchia for the fifth. Cabrera is hitting .310 this season with 27 homers and 77 RBIs.     The Tigers say Cabrera is day-to-day.

MLB – Cubs fire DJ who played song with references to violence
The Chicago Cubs have fired a DJ who played a song with references to violence after reliever Aroldis Chapman left the mound against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.  The DJ was fired for playing “Smack My B—- Up” by The Prodigy. Chapman served a 29-game suspension to begin the season under Major League Baseball’s new domestic violence policy. His girlfriend told police Chapman had pushed and choked her on Oct. 30. Chapman said there was an argument but he was pushed down by his girlfriend’s brother, then got a handgun and fired eight shots into a wall and window while locked in his garage. Prosecutors declined to file charges, citing conflicting accounts. Cubs President Crane Kenney apologized, saying the music selection showed “a lack of judgment and sensitivity to an important issue.” He says the Cubs will implement stronger controls to review and approve music before it is played.

MLB – A-Rod says he’s done for this season
Alex Rodriguez is scuttling any thought of a comeback attempt this season. A-Rod said through a spokesman that he will not play again this year, dispelling rumors that he might join the Miami Marlins. The 41-year-old Rodriguez was released by the New York Yankees on Saturday after hitting just .200 with nine home runs and 31 RBIs this season.

NHL – New deal for Ducks’ forward
Antoine Vermette has joined the Anaheim Ducks by agreeing to a two-year, $3.5 million contract.  Vermette’s previous contract was bought out by the Coyotes after he scored 17 goals and 38 points last season. The Coyotes bought out the remaining $3.75 million on his contract earlier this month, making him a free agent. The veteran center has scored 471 points in 910 NHL games while playing for Arizona, the Blackhawks and Senators.

Olympics – Gymnastics – Biles settles for bronze
The drive for five is over. American Simone Biles was trying to become the first female gymnast to capture five gold medals at a single Olympics when she began the balance beam competition at the Rio Olympics on Monday. But she had to settle for bronze following a flawed performance, wobbling during the middle of her routine and landing awkwardly while completing a front somersault. Biles had to grab the beam with both hands to avoid falling down and eliminating herself from medal contention. U.S. teammate Laurie Hernandez claimed the silver medal in an event won by Sanne Wevers of the Netherlands. The 19-year-old Biles will be in the mix for another gold on Tuesday in the floor exercise finals.

Olympics – Women’s 400 Meters
On the track, Shaunae Miller of Bahamas dove to the finish line to win the women’s 400-meter final, preventing American Allyson Felix from capturing a fifth Olympic gold medal. Miller finished in 49.44, just seven-hundredths of a second ahead of Felix.

Olympics – Women’s 200 Meters
Two-time Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown has missed out on qualifying for the semifinals in the women’s 200 meters. The 34-year-old won the 2004 and `08 Olympic titles and was a bronze medalist at the last world championships.

Olympics – Women’s Water Polo
The United States and Hungary have advanced to the semifinals of the women’s water polo tournament. The U.S. cruised past Brazil 13-3 and Hungary went to penalty shots for a 13-11 win against Australia. They will play on Wednesday for a spot in the final.

Olympics – Egypt/Israel athlete handshake snub
And once again politics have entered the Olympic arena. In judo, Egypt’s Islam El Shehaby has been sent home after refusing to shake his Israeli opponent’s hand. The IOC says Shehaby was reprimanded by the referee and then was sent home by the Egyptian Olympic Committee.

NFL – Lions sign TE Quarless, who is facing 2-game suspension
The Detroit Lions have signed free agent tight end Andrew Quarless, who is facing a two-game suspension to start the season. Quarless has been suspended two games for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. He is eligible to participate in preseason games. Quarless was sentenced to a year of probation and fined $1,000 for firing a gun in Miami Beach, Florida, last year. Lions general manager Bob Quinn said in a statement Monday he is aware of the upcoming suspension, and that the team has talked with Quarless about the incident that caused it. The Lions also announced that they have signed linebacker Dominique Tovell, waived tight end Ben McCord and put wide receiver Andre Caldwell on injured reserve.

NFL – Gronk leaves joint practice with apparent lower body issue
Tight end Rob Gronkowski left the first day of joint practices between the Patriots and Bears on Monday with an apparent lower-body issue. Gronkowski made awkward cut while running a route during 7-on-7 drills. He grimaced after the play and paused briefly before jogging back gingerly to rejoin his teammates. Gronkowski was led back to the locker room by a trainer and did not return.  Later, tempers flared between Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler and Bears receiver Alshon Jeffery, leading to an extended shoving match. It intensified into about a 30-second scrum after teammates intervened. Both players were ejected from practice. A shorter incident occurred toward the end of the workout between Patriots lineman Nate Solder and Chicago linebacker Lamarr Houston.

NFL – League prepared to suspend 4 linebackers
The NFL says the four linebackers being investigated for an alleged link to performance-enhancing drugs will be suspended unless they agree to be interviewed by the league in the next 10 days. The linebackers are James Harrison of the Steelers, Clay Matthews and Julius Peppers of the Packers and free agent Mike Neal. A league vice president sent a letter to the NFL Players Association detailing the plan to suspend the four if they don’t speak with the league by Aug. 25.

NFL – NFL, Pepsi respond to Adele’s Super Bowl show turn-down
NFL and Pepsi said Monday they have had several conversations with artists about performing at the Super Bowl, but said they haven’t formally asked Adele or any other musicians to appear. At a concert in Los Angeles on Saturday, Adele said that she turned down performing at the big game.  In a statement, NFL and Pepsi said “we have not at this point extended a formal offer to Adele or anyone else.” Adele said Saturday that “they did ask me (to perform), but I did say no.”  NFL and Pepsi didn’t respond to an email asking if Adele was one of the artists they approached about possibly performing at the Feb. 5, 2017 event in Houston.  A representative for Adele had no comment Monday.

Gene Sauers is the winner of the rain-delayed U.S. Senior Open. Sauers closed with a 1-under 69 to finish 3-under in his first career senior victory. He closed with three straight pars to go from a one-shot deficit to a one-shot win over Miguel Angel Jimenez and Billy Mayfair. Jimenez lost the lead by closing the tournament with back-to-back bogeys.

HS Lacrosse – 2 lacrosse team members face trial in guinea pig’s death
Two members of the Grosse Ile High School lacrosse team face trial on killing or torturing animals and conspiracy charges in the slaying of a guinea pig prior to one of their games. The Wayne County prosecutor’s office says 18-year-old Tanner Coolsaet and 17-year-old Michael Roth were bound over Monday and are scheduled for Aug. 29 arraignments in circuit court.
